Former Scientology insider blasts church as greedy
A former Church of Scientology executive has sharply criticized the church's leaders and fundraising efforts in an e-mail to thousands of current and former church members. The church, however, dismisses Debra Cook as a "disgruntled defector" who does not represent the majority of church followers.
In her e-mail, Cook calls on members not to give any more donations unless it can be justified by specific writings of L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of Scientology.
The story first broke in The Village Voice, which published the e-mail. It was followed by a story in the Tampa Bay Times, formerly the St. Petersburg Times, which recently published a multipart investigation on the church titled "The Money Machine."...
