Preaching virtue of spanking even as deaths fuel debate

After services at the Church at Cane Creek on a recent Sunday, a few dozen families held a potluck picnic and giggling children played pin the tail on the donkey.

The white-bearded preacher, Michael Pearl, who delivered his sermon in stained work pants, and his wife, Debi, mixed warmly with the families drawn to their evangelical ministry, including some of their own grandchildren.

The pastoral mood in the hills of Tennessee offered a stark contrast to the storm raging around the country over the Pearls’ teachings on child discipline, which advocate systematic use of “the rod” to teach toddlers to submit to authority. ...

The Biblical "device" would be - yawsar or shaybet. Clearly these must be more theological and therefore effective.

Perhaps a combination approach may be best.
Next week would be a good time since you all will be celebrating Native American Slaughter Day.

Don't forget to include the dirk in your device list, Dirk.

They are. It's called abortifacients and abortion. Before birth it's perfectly okay. 120 million in the U.S. alone to date.

After birth, be prepared to spend the rest of your days in prison.

I thought we settled this false teaching already.

SPANK, v.t. To strike with the open hand; to slap [Websters 1828]

SPANK: to strike especially on the buttocks with the open hand [Merriam-Webster]

Don't see spanking in the dark sayings.

"A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels: to understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings."

I would still like to know why people are not putting children to death, a clear command by God.

chastened, you are out of line calling someone liberal for quoting scripture.
Chasten yourself.

I acknowledge your scriptures, and acknowledge that God disciplines. Take the whole of scripture.

Do we really want our women acting like men? Why do some teachers feel the need to squelch the compassion and gentleness of a mother, especially of a newborn? Why are men bringing in a stranger to tell them how to manage their household? It's wierd.

limiting a babies feeding time is ludicrous and has led to deaths. Newborns need extended feedings for hydration, and for increasing milk supply. Mothers who have persevered know this and have the healthy baby pictures to pass on to the younger women. Pass on a picture of that healthy baby, not these kindsbooks---

God gave women the nursing and the patience and gentleness which gets knocked out of them by nonChristian dogma masquerading as "Christianity".

punishing a baby for biting (hello! have you ever heard of a teething ring?), or for pulling mommy's hair? (hello! you are bigger than the baby, just pull your hair back). Switching a baby?

They misrepresenta Christian families and homeschoolers. Join a support group for grieving mothers of such ludicrous "theology". "Use a weed eater chord"-awful!

Another Liberal on site.

Why don't you read the whole Bible not just the selected nice bits.

God chastises His children and His children know it, and it hurts.

Proverbs 3:11 My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction: 12 For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.

Rev 3:19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

The most perfect role model any mortal ever had is the Word of God. And the Word became flesh and taught us;
Matt 5:17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

Which includes the Book of Proverbs - for true followers of Christ Jesus.

I counsel you to become a follower of the whole Jesus. Yes, he has a gentle merciful side to him...but don't think for a moment he won't chasten disobedient children.

It is amazing to me that sadomasochistic people could pervert the teachings of Jesus to justify child abuse. If you as an adult can not be rational and provide role models for appropriate behavior, you should not have children. If you have the brains...just think for a moment. When you are beating a child for hitting a younger sibling and saying "I have told you not to hit someone smaller than you," what kind of a role model are you? I think you are a sickie.
Where in the ]]73 books of the Holy Bible do you find the word, "sadomasochistic"?

Who's “Gentle” Jesus? Certainly not the fellow described in John 2:13-16. Should we imagine He only used the scourge for effect? Some “role model” He is!

"But on the central issue, he and his wife do not waver. “To give up the use of the rod is to give up our views of human nature, God, eternity,” they write. "

Pity. His view that human nature is that of a "stubborn mule" rather than a person with a conscience created in the image of God needs to be given up.

Deaths of children at the hands of parents that follow his brutal abuse of children are not surprising.
