Court blasts city's ban on sound of church bells

"Churches shouldn't be targeted and punished for ringing their bells as a public expression of faith that's been done for centuries," said Erik Stanley, senior legal counsel for the Alliance Defense Fund, which worked on the case.

"The federal court has made the right decision by declaring that the city's noise ordinance violates the First and Fourteenth Amendments," he said. ...

I wonder if this "call to worship" (which is what church bell ringing usually signifies) is actually convicting some of these same people who are complaining of "noise" of their sinful state.

At any rate, we've sure come a long way since the times when cities and towns themselves could be identified by the distinctive bell-tones of their local churches.

When I was a child, I lived two houses from a Church building where the church bells rang twice a day everyday.

I really enjoyed it and became depressed when we moved away, I really missed the bells.

Crazy laws/ordinances like this one makes me wonder if the city officials have too much time on their hands... Maybe they should be assigned some community volunteer work like feeding the hungry or helping the homeless find a place to live. They just might begin to appreciate the local churches and their ministries.
