Half of America 'effectively on welfare'
A leading free-market economist says it's not a stable situation for a republican democracy when half of the citizens aren't contributing to the cost of the government they're benefiting from.

The Washington-based Tax Policy Center estimates that about 47 percent of Americans will pay no federal income taxes at all for 2009. Either their incomes were too low, or they qualified for enough credits, deductions, and exemptions to eliminate their liability. (

The peace of Christ be upon you, "Jimmy".
With all due respect, shouldn't we all be careful to consider that what we hear coming from a pulpit is actually biblical? Many preachers are simply products of a seminary where a clear, historical understanding of biblical authority may not have been taught. I have been quite guilty of parroting what I had heard without any reflection or investigation. Clearly, Scripture is to be obeyed by ALL, including those individuals in civil government!
The Lord God will require an account from every human, of prominent or ordinary status- for He is not a respecter of persons. Please consider carefully the following verses in light of this to start:

Psalm 94:20-21, Isaiah 1:23 & 5:20, Micah 2:1-3 & 7:3, Romans 12:21, Ephesians 5:11

And incidentally, to apply the "Caesar" authority as you referred to (used in Rm. 13) is not really accurate as we STILL have a Constitutional Republic at this juncture.

May the Lord give His church much wisdom at this time of national judgment.

There's talk of adding a European VAT on top of income tax.
On further reflection, taxing American expenditure and giving the money to Europe is actually a truly brilliant idea.

The VAT. Is that the one Caesar is rendered in?

VAT is not a tax on income.

Perhaps somewhere in here Scott?

"Government debt (also known as public debt or national debt) is money (or credit) owed by any level of government; either central government, federal government, municipal government or local government. By contrast, annual government deficit refers to the difference between government receipts and spending in a single year.

As the government draws its income from much of the population, government debt is an indirect debt of the taxpayers. Government debt can be categorized as internal debt, owed to lenders within the country, and external debt, owed to foreign lenders. Governments usually borrow by issuing securities, government bonds and bills. Less creditworthy countries sometimes borrow directly from supranational institutions." (Wiki)

I'm starting to wonder what is going to happen when more taxes are required than there is income. I'm not being political, just noticing a trend in the system of government. There's talk of adding a European VAT on top of income tax. At some point, the amount of money the government needs is going to exceed the amount of money that people earn. What happens when 100% of all income is taken by the government? What do they do next? (We may effectively already be at this point with deficit spending.)
