‘Good Without God,’ Atheist Subway Ads Proclaim

Atheism is coming to the subway — or at least subway ads promoting it are.

Starting next Monday, a coalition of local groups will run a monthlong advertising campaign in a dozen Manhattan subway stations with the slogan “A Million New Yorkers Are Good Without God. Are You?” The posters also advertise the Web site BigAppleCoR.org, which provides a listing of local groups affiliated with the Coalition of Reason, the umbrella organization that coordinated the campaign.

Kyle: "...your point?"
As I said: Most agree on several axioms of morality. Pursuing happiness by arbitrary killing, or resolving conflicts with violence, would be condemned by all non-sociopaths. We'd tell someone like that that they're wrong, since a society that accepts that behavior disintegrates or becomes unliveable for many.
Kyle: "The atheist creation story is evolution"
Belittling atheists is to be expected here. But atheism has nothing to do with that science, unless one is offended at the idea that data aren't messed with by a supernatural entity. Just because evolution diversifies life and adapts it to its environs doesn't mean it "works" as a social precept. Almost all atheists (and theists) get that.
Kyle: "... anything is justifiable if you accept a materialistic worldview."
No, I'd say anything is justifiable only if one doesn't question one's source of morality. A non-materialist might say stoning for adultery is moral. But materialists recognize how social interactions affect society. So we've reasoned out a morality over generations, based on the society we want our loved ones to grow up in. This is why sufferage is no longer divisive. It's how we got rid of slavery. We grow out of harmful and immoral norms because of philosophy and rational discourse.

Sorry Jessica. I was being sarcastic. The post was meant for ouini, but I realize that I didn't say that explicitly.

I was trying to make the point that anything is justifiable if you accept a materialistic worldview. That's all. Rape was just the most extreme tool with which I could make my point, so I used that. I am NOT condoning it, but rather challenging ouini (and others like him) to back up his statements. Replace it with any vice, and the point is the same.

Sorry if I hurt your feelings, Jessica.

Kyle, your post is difficult to understand? Are you condoning rape or are you being sarcastic? I've been raped and I can tell you that your comments are not clear and are unsettling.

May God help you to be sensitive to others and their suffering. May you learn to show kindness and mercy along with letting "your yes be yes and your no be no".

"So it's better for people to be happy than not be happy." What's your point? What if I pursue happiness by killing Jews/Blacks/people under 6 feet tall/ etc? Are you going to tell me I'm wrong? You see resolving conflicts without violence as the best way. Good for you, but what if I don't? Would you try to stop me from my violent solution? Why? Who do you think you are? (That's hypothetical sarcasm only, please don't turn me into the FBI)

Its interesting you mention rape. The atheist creation story is evolution, and in evolution the only purpose in life is to pass on one's genes. Rape seems to do a pretty good job of that, and thus it is a trait that has survived. Ever read "A Natural History of Rape" by Randy Thornhill and Craig Palmer? If it works for the scorpion fly, why not humans? It seems to me that we had better either start arresting male flies or stop arresting male humans, if we're going to be consistent. After all, according to Richard Dawkin's comparison with apes in "The Blind Watchmaker", it's only the deceptive lack if embarrassing intermediates that allows us to hold a double standard.

Psalm 14:1-3 The fool has said in his heart,“There is no God.” They are corrupt, They have done abominable works, There is none who does good. The LORD looks down from heaven upon the children of men, To see if there are any who understand, who seek God. They have all turned aside, They have together become corrupt; There is none who does good, No, not one.

Matthew 7:17-19 Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

Romans 3:11-13 There is none who understands; There is none who seeks after God. They have all turned aside; They have together become unprofitable; There is none who does good, no, not one.” “ Their throat is an open tomb; With their tongues they have practiced deceit”;“ The poison of asps is under their lips”;

It is so weird to me that people often claim that atheists have no basis for good, and/or that they have no justification for finding murder or theft objectionable.

It only takes a moment of thought to realize that almost everyone believes and agrees on several of the same axioms of morality: people's desires are more or less similar, desiring to pursue happiness and avoid pain and suffering. So it's better for people to be happy than not be happy.

Resolving conflicts the best way for all concerned, then, involves avoiding inflicting needless suffering. This including avoiding killing, slavery, and rape, which indicts a huge swath of man-made suffering as immoral from the get-go.

Obviously, this isn't the forum for a thorough Algonquin Round Table discussion on morality. But I would hope it would be a bit thoughtful, with fewer cheap shots.

This ad should be re-written, "Good without God for now." Ever see those "good without God" types when they're facing death?" They're either silly with terror at the horror they know they face or they change their "good without God" minds (which some call deathbed or foxhole conversion).

Atheists are "good" only because it is not in their best interests to misbehave. As things stand for now at least, criminal behavior (or behaviour, if you like) carries unpleasant penalties. Remove the penalties, and give time for it to sink in, and you'll see all of the token vices. In the words of the "Men's Warehouse" guy, I guarantee it.

I highly recommend the last part of Anne Coulter's book, "Godless".

Looks like New York won't need a police department anymore..........or IRS collectors, prisons, parking tickets, judges, lawyers, human resource departments. No more need for locksmiths (won't need locks on doors), street lights or mess of other things, because the great people of New York are all now "good". Crime will go down to 0% right?

"Coalition of Reason"

Funny thing is, if they were able to rightly reason, they wouldn't be athiests.

Yes, Max. That’s when they will find out (the hard way) that they must have met an absolutely perfect standard from the moment they were born until death. Not even one sin will be overlooked.

Other folks’ comments are very good, too.

“A Million New Yorkers Are Good Without God. Are You?”

Ignorance is bliss???

God wrote
Luke 6:32 For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also love those that love them.
33 And if ye do good to them which do good to you, what thank have ye? for sinners also do even the same.
34 And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again.
35 But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil."
