HOUSTON -- A Saturday evening at the Second Baptist Church of Houston is like Christian worship in most American towns: a sermon, some music, nice people walking from the parking lot with Bibles in hand.
The difference is scale. Second Baptist is the second-largest "megachurch" in the U.S., a modern cathedral complex the size of an airport terminal. Inside "E Gym," where the congregation's "small" Saturday evening service is being held, two basketball courts full of believers in jeans and flip-flops rock out, sing along or just watch as a huge contemporary band jams to the song "Did You Feel the Mountains Tremble?"...
Forbes analysis of megachurches left out the theological and instead gave some interesting statistics--like one third of attendees are single as opposed to one-tenth in smaller churches; that average age is 40 as opposed to 53, and that this is not the first church people attend. So young Christian singles go to megachurches to find a mate! Does it work? That's another statistic yet to be studied. It's like Christian dating services--do they work?
Mega Church, When you have a church that caters to the people and what they want it reminds me of what the prophet Isaiah said They draw nigh unto me with their mouths BUT their hearts are far from me. Jesus also condemns false and wordly christians Also, you can carry a Bible to church bringing out that prophecy from Isaiah. Also another scripture in Jeremiah says that they have hewn out broken cisterns which hol no water and have rejected me the fountain of living waters. When you have a church that preaches a little of the Word and has a lot of entertainment, ie rock bands, basketball courts, modern music, i sometimes wonder what is next, a hockey rink, a baseball diamond, swimming pools. That is what is wrong with American christians, speak unto me soft words, another women have the rule of them and they love to have it so. i am pre-trib, But i do think and believe that the church in America needs to undergo persecution like our brothers and sisters overseas, because My Lord Jesus needs a pure church and we are not PURE!!!! In Christ.
Frank, I'm sure there are some churches that are good in Texas where you live, and have less than 20,000 members? So, take that sentiment, locally! ]]The Truth Behind The Church's Purpose
"Megachurches"? Given a choice, I'd rather attend a gathering of the underground church in China. No fancy building. No wordly entertainment. No banquet. Nothing to excite the flesh. They just meet around the Word of God. The result? Severe persecution. Oh, and many thousands of Chinese saved EVERY DAY because of their bold witness! Reminds me of the book of Acts.
Yeah, it's not the only mega-church there, one that has nothing to do with Christianity is also there, 70-90 million dollar complex of the Osteens, ]]]Does God Want Us to Be Rich? Most of the churches on the Forbes list are apostate. While I don't like the preaching style at Second Baptist, I wouldn't say it is, but those like Osteens' are. I wonder in a churches of those large proportions can the congregation interact with one another?
