U.S. Navy Unveils New High-Tech Ship Called USS Freedom That Can Fight Pirates

The United States Navy unveiled a new high-tech ship it says can chase down pirates off the coast of Somalia faster and more aggressively than previous vessels could.

The USS Freedom can go up against massive enemy fleets and is one of the fastest ships in the Navy to date, its commander said in a FOX News "America's Newsroom" exclusive.

"It's more than an evolutionary step forward, it's a revolutionary step forward," Cmdr. Michael Doran told FOX News on Tuesday. "It's highly automated and it's very fast. ... For a piracy mission, we can go out there and cover more water with fewer ships." ...

Jim, like a politician under media pressure, you changed your story. First you questioned if Jefferson was even mentioned (uninformed criticism); now, after perusing the story, you say he wasn't given *much* prominence. Little is not the same as nothing.

Go ahead & post better stories, for all I care.

I did, Neil, Jefferson wasn't given much prominence in the article. Just about the only way to find his name two or three times in the article. I think I'll still stick with, ]]Jefferson Versus the Muslim Pirates, even if the didn't go out and do battle with them personally.

"...I don't know even if it mentioned the role President Jefferson played."

You must not have read the article carefully then, Jim; several of his actions are mentioned (one of which I quoted inline). And I noted Jefferson's Quran in my post. I think you simply dislike being corrected about even trivial points of information.

Visit that page again, type ctrl-F, & search for "Jefferson."

No, Neil, while looking through your article, while a good comment about the Navy, I don't know even if it mentioned the role President Jefferson played.

Perhaps the British could help us Colonials out with the making of ]]Q-Ships (Boats)? They should work even better on these pirates than they did on submarines?

But your idea is interesting nonetheless, though I can imagine objections experts might make (such as TOO fast). If it's possible, I'm sure the Russians are giving it some thought, since they have suppressed Somali pirates too.
Thanks for the good links, Neil. I didn't think to google "ground effect vehicls". That site looks like it has a lot of good info.

Only 45 knots?

This need to employ super-fast surface craft to interdict the current pirate threat must be causing at least some in the former Soviet Union to at least think about testing this new market using their ekronoplane technology, on which they spent bundles of money during the cold war.

Can't remember how fast ekronoplanes can go but I'm sure it's much faster than 45 knots, and they can carry lots of troops and equipment.

No doubt Jefferson had a copy of the ]]The Qur'an, so he would understand the enemy better, you referred to a good article, but none of this would happen if Jefferson wasn't willing to take strong actions against the ]]Muhammadans, q.v., ]]Jefferson Versus the Muslim Pirates.

Actually the Barbary Pirates were more organized & able to deploy warships more competitive with (but still not as large as) Western types. The problem today is, navies cannot be everywhere at once, esp. when dealing with small, fast craft such as the pirates use now.

More info: ]]The Barbary Wars (Mariner's Museum)

"Jefferson had long disagreed with the policy of paying tribute and argued that it would be cheaper to build a navy than give in to the sultans' ever-increasing demands."

N.B.: the pirates, then as now, justified their actions from the Quran (which BTW, Jefferson had a copy of).

They didn't seem to have much problem chasing down pirates in the 18th century - who needs hi-tech??? One good cannon shot amidships and blow them away. Ahoy lads.
