Catholics in the Philippines nailed to crosses for Good Friday
While the ritual is frowned on by church authorities, the voluntary crucifixions in villages north of the capital Manila are one of the most extreme displays of religious devotion in Asia's largest Roman Catholic state.

Other penitants whipped their backs and chanted prayers as dozens of them mixed faith with gory rituals to mark the church calendar's most sombre day at Easter.

Monsignor Pedro Quitorio, spokesman of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines, said the church discourages such rituals because the penitents were expecting rewards for hurting themselves. ...

Shiite Muslims and Catholics in the Philippines, have a lot in common don't they, John?

[AUTHOR]John MacArthur[/AUTHOR]...Scripture clearly teaches what is God's will for our lives. He wants us to be saved (1 Tim. 2:4), Spirit-filled (Eph. 5:18), sanctified (1 Thess. 4:3), and suffering (1 Peter 4:19). However, our suffering shouldn't be self-inflicted. God doesn't want us to flagellate ourselves....[/QUOTE]from [URL=http://www.biblebb.com/files/mac/1718.htm]]]The Early Church Pattern for Evangelism (Part 2)[/URL]

This is nothing more than modern-day Baal-worship. See 1 Kings 18:28

You just don't read the scripture do you Lance? Anyone who is wanting to share in God's glory is attempting to glorify oneself. This is the GRAVEST SIN of them all. Anyone attempting to share in God's glory through their own prayers and works are drawing the greatest response of the wrath of God.

You have not shed your works righteousness and bowed your prideful self before the Son.

You should refrain from posting knowledge without wisdom on these boards until you repent and believe on the FINISHED work of our Lord Jesus Christ.

This is about as much use as a pork chop in a synagogue.

It was done ONCE only.
It was ordained ONCE only.
Nobody else can share in this whatsoever.
The point of it all was not the wood or the nails - it was the Incarnate God.

Bible states

Hebrews 10:10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

"ONCE FOR ALL" Lance!!!

They WISH TO SHARE in Jesus' sacrifice?
We SHARE in Jesus' sacrifice through prayers and works??
Huh???

Lance, how about reading what Scripture has to say about SHARING in the sacrifice of Christ.

By faith:
" ... our old man IS CRUCIFIED WITH HIM, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. Now if we BE DEAD WITH CHRIST, we believe that we shall also live with him" [Rom 6:6,8]

"I AM CRUCIFIED WITH CHRIST: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me." [Gal 2:20]

Did you get that?
"is crucified";
"be dead";
"am crucified" ...
"*WITH CHRIST*"

Evidently, Lance, you don't have a good understanding of the substitutionary atonement that WAS made for you by Christ. Your "sharing" has already been accomplished. IF you are "in Christ" by faith, your "old man" has been crucified WITH CHRIST! Done!

jat, I understand your point, but, wanted to comment on your above comment. Even dying on the cross, in this manner, would not be sharing in the sufferings of Christ. This is all of self. It has nothing to do with entering into the sufferings of Christ. He did not call for self-mutilation. He called for obedience. "To obey is better than sacrifice." Submission is so foreign to our natural self. We would rather do anything, even the self-agrandizement on the cross, rather than moment by moment, day by day, dying to ourselves.

Sorry for the interruption. No further comment. Back to you. Take it away.

How are these people 'sharing in Jesus' sacrifice' Lance? This is more of a mockery. Christ humbled Himself and suffered severely, to the point of death, at the hands of sinners. Are these mockers going to take it all the way and die? If they truly want to 'share in Christ's sufferings' they must die.
It's amazing how this unbiblical mockery of the sacrifice of our Lord Jesus Christ is 'overlooked' by the RCC...where's the outcry and the shame at such a stunt?
The great harlot continues on in her harlotry.

I didn't read the article, didn't need to, but based on the headline, I can confidently say, this is not a sacrifice, nor a sharing in the sufferings of Jesus. This is for attention. People will go to great lengths for attention.

The History Channel recently showed an excellent depiction of Roman crucifixion. It was gruesome, extreme torture. Medical doctors described the process on the body, and they studied how long a strong, young man could hang on the cross. 15 minutes was all he could take. Imagine that! Unlike Jesus, He had not been beaten with skin flayed down to the bone, nerve endings causing excruciating pain, rubbing up against raw wood.

In today's world, we have no idea how painful the death on the cross was. And, yet, it wasn't the physical that made Jesus' death the ultimate sacrifice, it was that moment in time when He was separated from the Father. I'm sure theologians have dealt with this in depth, but, still this is probably something we cannot and will never know fully.

Lance, I see no record of Christians in the New Testament self-mutilating themselves. I'll stick with the finished work of Calvary.

Now pester mike what do you think your 'church' are acheiving by nailing your 'relatives ' in this way ? shouldnt you be more respectful and inclusive ? shouldnt you be taking your 'ancestor' for a meal dont forget to check the vegetarian menu - how anout bananas and leaves for starters - or taking your 'evolutionary cousin' into your home ? Why not give him/her a national geographic to read then you can discuss the articles over dinner when i was a child we used to go to the chimpanzees tea party at the zoo, and jolly funny it was too, the zoo keepers would lay out the tea pot and cups and the chimps would then disport themselves in hilarious fashion by attempting to drink from the tea cups and pour food and drink over each other

brilliant ! nowadays thats gone cos folk like you are entertaining them indoors in your house or banging nails in them - shame on you sucker - God chooses your delusion Isiah 66 - you should know that Mr theology degree

but its not to late to get the truth (in theory) but i reckon you probly are reprobate you should never have gone to that heretic arminist theology school that God made you go to

"While the ritual is frowned on by church authorities..."

Imagine Roman prelates frowning upon any ritual! You are right about this, Lance: journalists get it wrong more often than not. Maybe they cribbed this article from the Vatican Press service.

I wonder where these poor, deluded souls ever got the crazy idea that self-inflicted pain and suffering would earn them favor in the sight of God? Surely not from the very prelates who are now embarrassed at the too-public manifestation of the practical outworking of their hellish doctrine?

Jesus paid it all. It is finished. The cross is empty, and Jesus has risen from the dead and ascended into heaven. He's not in a little breadbox, and you cannot pay for your own sins by pretending to be crucified. If you were somehow to come across the actual shroud that Jesus was wrapped in for the short time he was dead, it would still be just a piece of linen with no magical powers to save your soul.

In fact, you can do absolutely nothing to pay for your sins. You will never be good enough! Your only hope is to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and what he accomplished on the cross.

He is risen! The victory is his! Praise his name!
