Evangelical German Family Seeks U.S. Asylum to Homeschool Kids
The case of a homeschooling family seeking for political asylum in the United States after fleeing Germany is expected to go before an immigration judge in Memphis, Tenn., Thursday.

Uwe and Hannelore Romeike, formerly of Bissingen, Germany, along with their five children, made it to the United States last August and say they were persecuted for their evangelical Christian beliefs and for homeschooling their children in a country where school attendance is mandatory.

“The persecution of homeschoolers in Germany has dramatically intensified,” said Michael P. Donnelly, an attorney with the Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) representing the family. “They are regularly fined thousands of dollars, sent to prison, or have the custody of their children taken away simply because they choose to home educate.” ...

The laws whereby homeschooling is forbidden in Germany were created in 1936 under Hitlers government. They have never been repealed - in striking contrast to the treatment of other nazi-laws.

Naturally enough, this case has received absolutely no press coverage in Germany.

I have never stated that anybody is not responsible for their actions. Everybody is responsible for their actions. Where did you get that crazy notion that I believe that nobody is responsible for their actions? I do not believe that someone who is insane and psychotic is not responsible for their actions. I believe that someone who is insane and psychotic is responsible for their actions.

Time will tell if the US will remain true to the Constitution. It has already been violated or reinterpreted to push propaganda and moral and spiritual decline and supression of Christianity.

Germany is the only european country with an outright ban on homeschooling but this does seem to open up a can of worms on asylum and immigration!
Whilst we would all sympathise with the families in Germany who do not have the freedom to homeschool their children, it does seem to establish an unusual precident, to encourage families from one sovereign country to another on the basis of this type of philosophy.
I would much rather have these immigrants than the majority we are currently receiving. I am doubtful that our country will be a safe haven for home schoolers for long, though, given the current trends. Socialists of every nation hate independent thinkers, and we have become a socialist nation, unfortunately.

Some time ago, we threw our "hat in the ring" to sponsor or aid any German homeschool asylum-seekers, but got no reply from HSLDA.

Germans seem to take philosophy seriously (for good or ill). Read their political party platforms, for instance. My question is, why don't Americans or Britons? Many seem to think philosophy is merely an academic parlor game.

"According to HSLDA attorney Donnelly, a victory in the Romeikes’ groundbreaking case will provide a path to safety for German homeschool families escaping persecution."

It may also depend on the judge in this case whether it goes their way or not. He may well be an atheist who will not accede to their request.
