Mikhail Gorbachev, the last Communist leader of the Soviet Union, has acknowledged his Christian faith for the first time, paying a surprise visit to pray at the tomb of St Francis of Assisi.
"St Francis is, for me, the alter Christus, the other Christ," said Mr Gorbachev. "His story fascinates me and has played a fundamental role in my life," he added.
Mr Gorbachev's surprise visit confirmed decades of rumours that, although he was forced to publicly pronounce himself an atheist, he was in fact a Christian, and casts a meeting with Pope John Paul II in 1989 in a new light....
nl- once again, you avoid the questions posted and just string verses together senselessly, as if to try and make a point. You cannot back your claim of salvation by works scripturally, you do not know how to correctly divide the word. Your hang-up is found within your own heart, pride. You insist you sought God first, making Him out to be a liar. You are in dire need of repentance. Then you blame others for this debate; You are the one who started this debate!! You need to examine yourself to see if you are in the faith. Quoting scripture doesn't prove anything. Share with us your testimony, when were you broken over your sin? What brought you to Jesus? What changes has He made in your life? Answer these from the heart. These are fair questions and most would be eager to tell others what the awesome Lord has done for them. If you cannot answer, then simply stop posting here.

There is a yoke in Christ to carry but His yoke is easy and His burden is light.
The church at large is called to send, to go to all nations, to preach, to make disciples, to love their God and to love their neighbor. Talents are to be invested and not to be buried.
Christ's reward is with Him even to give every man according as his work shall be (Rev 22:12).
Justification is by faith without works but the type of faith that justifies is the type of faith that loves and works.
Paul told the Romans that he had received grace and apostleship "for obedience to the faith among all nations". (Romans 1:5; 16:26)
"Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation". - John 5
All will live in some state forever. Many are alienated from Christ the King and need to hear and heed His Word.
The call in 1 Co 15 is to be "always abounding in the work of the Lord".
How sad to see the visible church put such work into in-fighting rather than out-reaching!
nl: you didn't quote the full verse: "Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief." It goes on to say for the word of God isquick and apowerful and sharper than any twoedged sword piercing even to the dividing asunder of sould and spirit... nl: "Let us" refers to the Lord Jesus Christ in whom we live and move and have our being when we have been mercifully redeemed. In Matthew 11:28-30 we read those words:"Come unto me all ye who labour and are heavy laden and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn of me.." There is a yoke in Christ, but He did all the work: It is finished. "Let us" is the gracious way our Lord confirms, once again, that 'Lo I am with you even to the end of the age'.. Your true heart will be revealed as you read the word. It reads you while you read it. If you want to impute your own works and merits as the condition of your salvation, you misunderstand who Jesus is. May He by His Spirit lead you into all truth, and convince you of sin, judgment and righteousness. (Only His Righteousness which He has imputed unto His people freely by His finished work.)
nl. you are misquoting scripture, you're pulling verses out of the bible and taking them out of context. When we string verses together without knowing their content and try to make them fit, we get a wrong understanding of God's word. Do you believe God's word contradicts? "No one seeks after God", do you understand that text? "No one can come to me unless the Father draws him", do you understand that text? No one here is denying seeking God, what we are saying is what God's word teaches, before you can seek God, He has to draw you to Him; then, because He draws, we seek. What happened in your life that made you aware of your sin, when were you broken over it? Read 2 Cor. 7:10. After you read it, tell me if you understand it. Has God broken you over your sin, causing you to grieve in your heart and cry out for forgiveness? Remember this, whenever you put 'I' in your claim of salvation, you are robbing God. Satan said "I will be like the Most High", and he was kicked out of heaven. Please, don't throw more verses at us, answer the questions in this post.
To add to Praise Him's and Dr. Phil's faithful witness:
Lazarus (John 11) was 3+ days dead; Lord Jesus called him ..."he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go." nl: would you put to Lazarus's credit or ability to come forth? No. Same with the salvation which God has accomplished in Himself: Jesus Christ having died, being buried, and risen on the 3rd day. He is Life and it is Him that works in us to do and will of HIS good pleasure!!!!!!!The true REST in the redeemed is our LORD JESUS. All the rest is the fruit of HIS SPIRIT: not our volition. God from the beginning despised man putting his hand even to the stones used to build! not of works, that any man should boast! The new Life in Jesus bears fruit; did you ever see an apple tree strain to produce fruit? Yet you, nl, seem to want to give the creation credit for what only our Blessed Lord God deserves all honor or praise! I hope and pray you will come to know His true rest in Jesus. He who began a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ (Philippians 1:6)

"But Esaias is very bold, and saith, I was found of them that sought me not; I was made manifest unto them that asked not after me." Rom. 10:20, Isa. 65:1
God regenerates by His Sovereign Will and Power. No one can manipulate God or obligate him to give anything.
I'm grateful that God began to draw me to Himself at a young age and continued patiently with His Work. I grieve at my sins.
Another Jonathan Edwards sermon title is: "Persons Ought to Do What They Can For Their Salvation".
Even natural man can flee lusts; perform outward duties of morality; search the Scriptures; observe the Sabbath; control his tongue and thoughts; strive in all branches of duty to his neighbor. Lost sinners increase their sin if they neglect this.
"Though we can't save ourselves by own own strength, yet salvation is a prize which God hath set up for us to run for".
"Though men can't convert themselves, yet you are directed and advised by God to seek conversion..."
"...he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him". - Hebrews 11
"Ask...seek...knock..." - Matt 7
Doing nothing and listless seeking will not suffice. God uses means. God's Sovereign Work must be sought diligently.
Should I fault the Philippian jailer who came to Paul and Silas saying "What shall I do to be saved?"
nl- you are in error, by taking credit for salvation, you are calling God a liar and robbing Him of due glory. You twist the scriptures to suit your beliefs instead of allowing the Holy Spirit to teach you, your pride is sin. "NO ONE can come to me UNLESS the Father draws him"...Enough people have given you God's word, yet, you stick to your clouded version. You are giving an impression that all any lost sinner has to do is decide for themselves to seek God, on their own power. This is false teaching and contrary to sound doctrine. Please quit misleading any lost soul who may read your posts and think they have salvation by works. Let's shut this merry go round down, and move on.

praise Him wrote: What do you do with Psalm 14:2,3? Or Romans 3:11?
Those in Psalm 14 and Romans 3 who failed to seek or understand (all of us) were being filthy sinners. Yet, God has had mercy on a few of us with more to come.
As a type, Noah labored long and hard to build an ark for the saving of eight souls.
Bartimaeus called to Jesus insistently above a crowd that tried to quiet him. Four others climbed a roof to help a paralytic go near Jesus Christ. If physical healing was earnestly sought and later given by Jesus Christ, should not spiritual healing also be earnestly sought?
"Salvation is go great a thing, so glorious an attainment, that 'tis worth the while for a man to do his utmost every day during his whole life in the use of all proper means that he may attain." - Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758)
God is not obligated to save instantly those those who make a decision for Jesus or name the five points.
Sermon titles by Jonathan Edwards:
-The Manner in Which the Salvation of the Soul is to Be Sought
-Persons Ought to Endeavor to be Convinced of Sin
Strive to enter in at the narrow gate..(Luke 13:24)
nl: God will not give His glory to another. You are trying to take credit for saving yourself. Lord Jesus says: "No man can come to me, except the Father, which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the alst day. (John 6:44) nl: You don't believe the word of God; God is showing you mercy with faithful believers here telling you. Be afraid; and harden not your heart; In His graciousness, God treats His bountiful mercy and gifts of forgiveness by the Blood of Jesus Christ, King of kings and LORD of lords, by applying pronouns such as "thy faith has saved thee" His gifts are given without repentance and are truly GIVEN. His graciousness also proclaiims: "Be holy for I am holy" Do you really think you or me or anyone can make themself holy???? If y ou think so, you are in total darkness. The verb is actually in the passive: He makes us holy by the Righteousness in Christ who imputes His Righteousness to wretched sinners whom God has chosen before the foundation of the world. He hated Esau and loved Jacob (Romans 9) before they did good or evil. He is the Potter we are the clay. His Word does not return void, nl, you will be judged by it on the last day, or it will by His Spirit, convince you of sin, judgment and Righteousness.
nl. the passage in Luke 11:13 is spoken to believers, not those who are still lost in sin. You seem to think you play a part in God's salvation plan, which makes yours a salvation by works. What do you do with Psalm 14:2,3? Or Romans 3:11? You must understand the WHOLE counsel of God, not just a verse here and a verse there. Your argument is not just and does not hold water when compared with God's whole counsel; you need to go to the Lord and pray for discernment, clarity, and understanding. "There is NONE who seeks after God"...why do you call God a liar?

Prayer and asking the heavenly Father are forms of seeking God. Diligent use of all appointed means is necessary. God is a great King. He has given commands. Neglect of God's commands is sin.
". . .When ye SEE a cloud rise out of the west, straightway ye say, There cometh a shower; and so it is. And when ye see the south wind blow, ye say, There will be heat; and it cometh to pass. Ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky and of the earth; but how is it that ye do not discern this time? Yea, and why even of yourselves judge ye not what is right?" Luke 12:54-57
Because there are those who ask does not mean that they do so of their own power. "For by grace are ye saved through faith, and that . . .NOT . .. of. . . yourselves; it is the gift of God."
praise Him wrote: nl, you must remember the ministry of the Holy Spirit, He convicts the world of sin.......

"Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might..." - Eccl 9:10
nl, you must remember the ministry of the Holy Spirit, He convicts the world of sin, and the word is what brings about that conviction. All have sinned and fall short; how is it any could seek a God they have sinned against and reject until we come under conviction? Mr. Gorbachez claims Christianity, which is such a loose term in today's society, as he prays to a dead man's tomb. He acknowledged his faith; faith in what? His testimony appears shallow, no mention of repenting and believing in the gospel...
"Gorbachez 'admits' he is a Christian" If he were truly a follower of our Lord Jesus Christ, he would be proclaiming this with great joy. What he is is an idol worshipper and a necromancer, going to a tomb of a dead man named a "saint" by whom? by spiritually dead men wearing wimples and bonnets. Roman Catholics are NOT Christians. They do not believe the true Jesus of the Bible. Their Jesus is a false Christ whose work at Calvary and glorious Resurrection, and shed blood, they (ROman Catholics) do not believe is enough to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:8,9 from the Word of God says it is enough. Stop calling RC's Christians! True Christians would gladly forego a civil office to worship the true Lord Jesus Christ; religionists such as Gorbachev serve the same kingdom as popes: their own fleshly, temporary kingdom. The kingdom of God is not of this world. The world will hate His own, not revere them like these false religionists seek after. Maybe Gorby is making plans for his own tomb where he will be necromanced and worshipped too.
