'Magic is over' for U.S., says French foreign minister
PARIS: Bernard Kouchner, the foreign minister of France and a longtime humanitarian, diplomatic and political activist on the international scene, says that whoever succeeds President George W. Bush may restore something of the United States' battered image and standing overseas, but that "the magic is over."

In a wide-ranging conversation with Roger Cohen of the International Herald Tribune at the launch of a Forum for New Diplomacy in Paris, Kouchner on Tuesday also held out the hope of talking with Hamas, the Palestinian faction that rules the Gaza Strip but has been ostracized by the West and by its Palestinian rival, Fatah, because it opposes peace talks with Israel and denies that Israel has a right to exist.

Asked whether the United States could repair the damage it has suffered to its reputation during the Bush presidency and especially since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, Kouchner ...

I'm not sure when I'll have a chance to check out your video, but the people of France elected the most US friendly prime minister in a while and on the heals of the invasion, at the peak of controversy.

...And yes, Australia also supported the invasion, whether reluctantly or not I do not know. Nevertheless GWB did not act alone and his sources were of a wide spectrum. I do not pretend to know whether or not the invasion was the wisest thing. I do think that in the wake of 9/11 the US was ready to do anything-even pray. Imagine that!

JP,

That last comment is a bit rich considering on another thread

JP wrote:
GWB did not decide to oust Hussein independently, nor has it been demonstrated that he lied, either knowingly or unknowingly.
It should be noted of course that the French and Germans position at the time indicated that they knew otherwise. They shared their intelligence.

Canada also refused to support an illegal, unlawful and altogether foolish war in Iraq.

You may wish to watch this video though I am sure you will be completely unswayed by the overwhelming evidence.

As an Englishman born and bred it pains me to say it but we all have a debt to the French in this particular matter.

While I confer with your mention of Jesus first, your overgeneralizations are something of an idiosyncrasy considering you point your finger at America while embracing Australia which in fact supported the invasion of Iraq by lending its troops.

Couldn,t have said it better myself!
Yet I did say it!
Matthew 5:13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.

Ahh america the spiritual babylon that floods other nations with their drug running and ideas of fun.
Australia is a far better place to be, yet id rather see the return of Christ or see real revival than live here.
the only people flooding to go too america are people looking to sell off God to make loads of many by free sin. if only people would want to be christians first to the Lord and americans last

It is interesting how on a prior post you seem to be defending Obama. Meanwhile you are listing abortion as one of your deadly sins. I am from Illinois and I know Obama's abortion record (http://www.ontheissues.org/Barack_Obama.htm). While Bush may not have eradicated abortion, he certainly has limited it. You speak of racism?

America is still the nation where people are dying to get in rather than dying to get out. In a world where freedom of speech is being trampled underfoot by the homosexual activists, thank God that we still have the freedom to proclaim the Gospel.

I don't know where you live, sir, but it's probably in front of a TV set and not in the real, everyday America that I know of. And for a COUNTRY which has so much hatred of God and prayer, you probably have a very difficult time of finding a place to worship with your fellow Christians every Sunday, huh.
Dear DJC49:

I have just returned from a short vacation, and didn't get the chance to respond to your last posting. I am very informed and do not watch much TV at all! However, you haven't proven me wrong at any point that I mentioned. So, my question to you is what points were not true of the 21st Century America? I'd be interested in hearing them.

America has been blessed by God, and is by far a better choice than most other nations, but Christians have lost sight of the real battle. We must boldly profess the gospel, in love, to a lost and dying world. Only God knows if we are nearing the end of the age; it certainly appears to be so...nevertheless, we have work to do. I don't complain about this country, I pray for it. Even with the upcoming election, we seem to have no real choice. God has abandoned a nation that continues to turn her back on Him. There is a dire need for Christians to unite, pray, and proclaim God's truth from sea to shining sea. We must live a life worthy of the calling we have received to make a difference, and many are not. Let us pray for a revival - starting with each one of us, and spilling out into those around us.

Even with all her faults America is still better than the muslim nations. I still thank God that I was born in this country rather than a Godless, muslim country where I would have no hope of ever seeing Him. Yes,we have a corrupt government but we the people elected them. Maybe if Christians would listen to God instead of voting their pocketbooks we would see God in control of this nation again. The only greed in this country is not in government.Yes,most Americans have turned from God,but who stood by and did nothing while all this was happening? It's times for Christians to stand up for our God or shut up complaining.

I must say taking pride in a nation that is corrupt, from the government on down, does not make sense. America is filled with greed, selfishness, arrogance; rejecting God in every way. We must stand firm in the faith, defending God's word, and not get caught up in defending a wicked nation. Let's not live on past glory, whatever blessings we had are evaporating. Yes, this is sad, but true.
Yeah, we're getting more like most of the world has already become.

I don't want to put words in someone else's mouth but...

America ...
"HATES God" when the word of God is against the behavior of if it feels good do it.
"HATES prayer" that is not a part of a name it and claim it theology.
"EMBRACES murder of inocent unborn babies" (embraces is too strong, but I agree with you here) Then we are in agreement.
"EMBRACES sexual perversion" every time there is a "Gay Pride Parade" or when shows like Will and Grace and movies like Brokeback Mountain are major financial successes. Also, when our young people homo and hetero alike are allowed to do the things they do.
"PRIDES itself in racism" almost every day and you can even see reverse racism now coming out of the Obama camp.
"PROMOTES greed, and arrogance"...this part of the US is American as apple pie. We have always thought of ourselves as better than others.

Dear Josh:

I have heard that statement many times over my 48 years on this earth: "America is the greatest Country in the World."

May I ask in what sense are you making this assessment? Surely, you're not talking about us being the most "Godly" or "God-Fearing?"

America is wicked to the core! There is so much hypocrisy in this nation of ours, until it literally stinks! We are still hung up as to whether a Black man or a woman is qualified to be our President.

We have a history of racism, bigotry, inequality, white collar corruption, murder of inocent babies by abortion, Child molestation/abuse, an approval of same-sex relationships, which is a clear perversion of what God had in mind, and the list goes on and on. We don't want prayer, nor do we want anything to do with God..except in a crisis!

Yes, he's right -- the magic is gone, but, at the same time, what does France have to offer the world? Anyhow, here in New York, a child (11-16) can (and many do) get an abortion without parental notification. But, get this, you can't buy cigarettes until you're sixteen! How about this? Some high schools have "cross dressing days" where males are not only allowed but, because it's an official senior day, are encouraged to come dressed and made up as females (and they do).
And how about this: at a graduation ceremony last year, an evening news anchor told the graduates that because he wanted to have a second child, and because he and his wife lived on separate coasts, he was given permission by his producer to cancel an interview with Yassir Arafat and to have conjugal relations with his wife on the East Coast! Amen to that.... Last--a large high school was closed because it was deemed a 'failing school.' Three small schools were opened in the same building under No Child Left Behind. Then NCLB declared them to be failing, closed them down, and replaced them with four other schools. During the transition, there were seven principals in one building!
Believe me, I'm seeking to honor God and am praying day and night.
