LONDON - The beast of the Book of Revelation intruded into the banter of the House of Commons on Thursday when a motion calling for the disestablishment of the Church of England was numbered 666.
The last book of the Bible says 666 is the number of a beast that "had two horns like a lamb, and ... spake as a dragon," and that "doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men."
"It is incredible that a motion like this should have, by chance, acquired this significant number," said Bob Russell, a Liberal Democrat lawmaker....
Philip, Just a point of information: Greek has no indefinite article, so you can't build an argument on the word being "a man" as opposed to merely "man".
Moreover, the Greek does instruct the reader to "calculate" (psephizoo) the number of the beast, not merely "interpret", a different word entirely had that been intended. The ancient cryptic practice of gematria, where each letter of a word had a numerical value, and the total of the letter values added up to a final number, seems to be what the text intends.
The problem was, and remains, what that underlying word is. The suggestions have been legion.
i think it is important to know that Rev 13 v 18 never seems to have had the word 'a' in it, the Greek originals say '666' is the 'number of man' - not 'the number of A man'. We were created on Day 6, Solomon's treasure was '666' shekels, etc - therefore 6 seems to be our earthly, grabby self. And furthernore, we are either 'marked' with that number - OR by God on our 'foreheads', as in Ezekiel 9 v 4 - obviously NOT a physical mark! So regardless of 666, Barcodes etc which do contain it, we should have the assurance of that spiritual mark, ensuring our entry into that spiritual Book of Life, by virtue of His work on the Cross.
Sir Straightforward wrote: '666' is a figurative expression, not a literal one!
Revelation 13:16-18 (King James Version) 16And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: 17And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. 18Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.
Here is wisdom for it is the number of a man and his number is Six hundred threescore and six. he is indeed real Let him that hath understanding
