Text messages remind me of spoofs of Reader's Digest. :^) On the bright side, they also bring shorthand to mind....

Probably because your voice calls are quite cheap in the US and you can easily afford it. In other parts of the world speaking on a cell phone is quite expensive and a text message is a relatively cheap alternative.

I have never understood text-messaging. I have more minutes on my cell phone plan than I can ever use, so why would I want to pay extra to labor over typing characters on that little keypad?

Someone once sent me a text message and I found out I was charged extra for it. I called my carrier and had them switch the feature OFF (incoming AND outgoing).

Maybe I'm missing something here, but text messaging seems to be the most ridiculous waste of money ever invented.
