Home-schooler booted from Geographic Bee
Last year's state champ in the National Geographic Bee won't be able to compete in this year's contest due to a little-publicized rules change, his parents said.

Matt Savage, a home-schooled seventh-grader from Francestown, had already won a school-level Bee at Great Brook School in Antrim. But after his win, officials with the Bee called and told parents Larry and Diane Savage that he couldn't go on to the state contest because of rules governing how home-schoolers can enter the event.

"We want to follow the rules, but it would have been appropriate to advertise the rules," Mrs. Savage said, adding that a well-publicized notice of the change on the Bee's Web site would have helped. "The fact it wasn't (well-advertised) meant Matt, and I'm sure other children as well, were disqualified."

Mrs. Savage said she was reluctant to go forward with her story, but she also hated the thought of other ...

"Our advocate is Jesus Christ, not some Spelling Bee committee!"

Sorry, Anon, but I had to chuckle at this statement of yours. I do agree with you. As for the article it sounds like coercion to keep kids in a public school system which has pretty much been going downhill. I'd seek to put my kids in either a conservative Protestant Christian school or home-school them. My child's ralationship with God is more important than pleasing a human council in a spelling bee.

"'Life isn't fair and sometimes people change rules' ‚ÄĒ how do you explain something like that? You can't," she said."

Well, even without presuming there is any sin in the rule change, if you are a Christian you can explain to your children about sin and wickedness.

You might also want to teach them about the countless martyrs through the centuries who were put to death without just cause for holding to the truth of the gospel. Life on this earth sometimes isn't "fair". Teach your children regarding eternal security, and teach them to wise up here and now because they will face unfairness and injustice in the workplace and in the daily affairs of life when they grow up (if not before).

Our advocate is Jesus Christ, not some Spelling Bee committee!

To the parents credit they should be applauded for not wishing to go forward with the story.
