PITTSBURGH -- A conservative Presbyterian church voted to sever ties with regional governing bodies in Connecticut and seven other states, saying it is frustrated that some church leaders have repeatedly tried to overturn a church law that bans gay clergy. The Rev. Richard Wolling, the pastor of the suburban Pittsburgh church, said the vote means Beverly Heights United Presbyterian Church is not in fellowship with the churches within those governing bodies -- called presbyteries -- and will not observe communion with the members of those churches.
"There's no description or prescription of what we have done in our constitution," Wolling said. "We acted in accordance to scripture."
The resolution was also critical of the Rev. Clifton Kirkpatrick, the denomination's stated clerk, or its chief executive, for his "failure to stand firm for our reformed faith."
