Canadian MP: Polygamy next if same-sex marriage legal
OTTAWA -- If the federal government legalizes same-sex marriages, it could open the door to making polygamy lawful in Canada, a Liberal MP said yesterday.
"I do not think we should be tinkering with the legal definition of marriage," Pat O'Brien said in an interview.
"Once you decide that a marriage between two men or a marriage between two women is lawful, what's to say it can't be a man and two women or a woman and five men?"
The MP from London, Ont., is a member of the House of Commons standing committee on justice and human rights, which is currently holding hearings on the issue of legalizing same-sex marriages. Mr. O'Brien is one of several MPs on the committee who have said they do not support same-sex unions.
