Last week we talked about, we were in verses 26 to 27. This starts another warning. There's been three other warnings in the book of Hebrews. Anybody remember what warnings That's okay, because I'm going to tell you. Chapter 2 was neglecting such a great salvation. You remember that? Chapter 3 was talking about falling away. Chapter 6 was warning against apostasy. And now we're going to get into another warning here. Let's go ahead and read from verses 26 to 32. And we'll see if we can get through verse 32 today. We'll start with Jessica. 26. For if we deliberately go on sinning after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sin. 27. But a fearful expectation of judgment and a fury of fire will consume the adversaries. 28. Anyone who has set aside the law of Moses dies without mercy on the evidence of two or three witnesses. 529, how much worse punishment the insane will be deserved by the one who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has forfeited the blood of the covenant by which he has sacrificed, and has outraged the Spirit of grace? Verily, for we now have besaid many sins in mind, I will reply, and again the Lord will judge the people, Alright, I know I said up to 32, but we'll stop there. Okay, so last week, again, like I said, we were in verses 26 to 27, where we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of truth, and we talked about that sinning deliberately. Paul and Pastor Jonathan brought up a specific sin that this maybe, this is referring to. Anybody remember what this is referring to? Unbelief. Unbelief, right? Who are we talking about? We're talking about Jewish Christians, some people who are thinking about going back into Judaism, and now we're saying if you go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of truth, They know the truth, they know about Christ. We just got through talking about, I think Megan talked about it last week, verses 17 and 18, I'll remember their sins and I'll allow the sins no more. And where there is a forgiveness of these, there no longer is an offering for sin. You're basically saying, They're basically saying, I'm good, I'm gonna go back to Judah, right? For us, yeah, no, I'm good, I don't need Christ. You're basically rejecting Christ, right? So if you're gonna reject Christ, after receiving the knowledge of truth, there no longer remains the sacrifice for sins. And then verse 27 talks about what's gonna happen. What can we expect for those who reject Christ? Judgment, right? or a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries. All right, so which brings us to verse 28. Anyone who has set aside the law of Moses died without mercy on the evidence of two or three witnesses. Where does that come from? Has anybody heard that before, the evidence of two or three witnesses? Would this be something new for the original audience? No, this is the Deuteronomy. Yeah. The law. Absolutely. Deuteronomy chapter 17, verses 2 through 7 talks about it. Deuteronomy 19.15 talks about it. All right, if there is found among you within any of your towns that the Lord your God is giving you a man or woman who does what is evil outside of the Lord in transgressing the covenant and has gone and served other gods and worshiped them or the sun or moon or any of the hosts of heaven which I have forbidden and it is told you and you hear of it then you shall inquire diligently, and if it is true and certain that such an abomination has been done in Israel, then you shall bring out to your gates that man or woman who has done this evil thing. He shall stone that man or woman to death with stones. On the evidence of two witnesses or of three witnesses, the one who is to die shall be put to death, and a person shall not be put to death on the evidence of one witness. Why is that? Why not one witness? Yeah, right? All right, so the evidence of two or three witnesses. Okay, now in light of that, well anyway, why do you think that the writer decides to link that Old Testament, those Old Testament concepts or verses to the punishment that will happen for those who reject Christ? He's gonna compare and contrast the Old Testament when judgment was right yeah Not to mention the fact that when we talk about all the Hebrews, what's the common theme? Jesus is better. So in the Old Testament, if you set aside the law of Moses, you're going to die without mercy on the evidence of two or three witnesses. What's going to happen when you when you reject Christ, when you reject Jesus as Savior, right? Jesus is better, and his word is better, his covenant is better. If you're gonna reject Jesus, it says you've done three things. How much worse the punishment do you think will be deserved by the one who has, one, trampled underfoot the Son of God, two, profaned the blood of the covenant, and three, outraged the Spirit of grace. You see the Trinity right there, too. That's amazing. The Son of God, who made the original covenant, that was God, the Father. And now you've outraged the Spirit of grace. So there's your three witnesses. Yeah, that's good. Yeah. And the thing, you know, when you think about the human, I mean, why did they have two witnesses? It's because of the fall and the tendency, the nature of man to do false witness. But we know that God's witness is not false because he sees everything. So we can feel confident, when God makes a judgment, that there's no room for error. Like, you know, with humans, we know innocent people have been put away, and people who are guilty have been cut off. But the reality is, like, he's the ultimate perfect judge. Right. Yeah. Absolutely. I kind of want to look at Were you going to say something, Paul? Yeah. It seems like we've spent the entire couple of years so far talking about how the sacrificial system is not needed. And more than likely, the tendency is that people are like, OK, we don't need Moses' law anymore. But we don't need the sacrificial system to sacrifice what we hear the writer of Hebrews is restating, hey, that doesn't deal with all the law. We're still going to use it. Yeah, still, like, you know, the point of that particular passage was, if you don't trust and believe in Yahweh, then you're going to be murdered. I mean, you're going to be stoned. Right. And it's not murder, it's just in the same way. translates into, if that doesn't go away, you don't get, oh, I just don't want to believe in God now that new testimony doesn't apply. Because now it's not just a couple of witnesses, human witnesses, it's going to be God himself. Right. Yeah. And John 8, he says, even if I'm a witness to myself, my testimony is true. So you have no reason not to believe his testimony. You're going to be held liable for not believing his testimony. Yeah. All right, so we're out of time. Next week, I want to go into those three things. The one who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, profaned the blood of the covenant, and outraged the Spirit of grace. I think there's a lot more that we could talk about there, and then we'll go on from there. Any other points anybody want to bring up?
