Our scripture reading for this evening, brothers and sisters, to which I invite you to turn with me at this time, is found in the first epistle of John, the third chapter. Not the gospel, according to John, but the first epistle of John near the end of the Bible. First John, chapter three. First John, chapter three, penned under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit by the apostle whom Jesus loved, the Bible says, the apostle of love, the apostle John. It's interesting to note that in this epistle, the Apostle John is partly contesting, he's partly condemning a heresy in the early church, which was known as docetism. Docetism, it's a word that comes from the Greek word doceo, which means to seem or to appear. It was a heresy that posited the position that Jesus came as divine being, but only appear to be human. He only seemed to be a man. He only seemed to die on the cross. He only appeared to walk the earth, whereas he did not, in fact, do so. He was not fully man as well as fully God. And so as we read the first epistle of John, we see in repeated fashion his contesting, condemning, correcting that gross heresy, which was very prevalent in his day. We begin reading this evening then in 1 John 3. Our scripture reading will take us through verse 10, but I draw your special attention to the first three verses of this epistle, the third chapter. For 1 John 3, verses 1 through 3 will constitute our text for this evening. 1 John 3, beginning in verse 1, hear then the word of the Lord. How great is the love the Father has lavished on us. that we should be called children of God. And that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know Him. Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when He appears, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. Everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself just as He is pure. Everyone who sins breaks the law. In fact, sin is lawlessness. But you know that He appeared so that He might take away our sins. And in Him is no sin. No one who lives in Him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has either seen Him or known Him. Dear children, Do not let anyone lead you astray. He who does what is right is righteous, just as He is righteous. He who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil's work. No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God's seed remains in him. He cannot go on sinning because he has been born of God. This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are. Anyone who does not do what is right is not a child of God, nor is anyone who does not love his brother. Thus far, the reading of God's holy word. As always, brothers and sisters, I ask and urge you to keep your Bibles open and handy as we look to God's word together at the close of this Lord's Day. Your Congregation of Jesus Christ, just a few days ago I was reading in this 30-year-old book entitled, Those Curious New Cults, From Astrology to Zen, From Witchcraft to Jesus Freaks, A Searching Quizzical Look at the Cult Explosion. This is a book which I received from among others because they were very graciously given to me from the library of the late Dr. Oren Holtrop, a long-serving and dearly loved pastor in the Christian Reformed Church, a brother who, again, is now in glory. As I was reading through this book, because I am old enough to remember, I well recalled and understood what author William J. Peterson had to say about these so-called Jesus freaks. Some of you who are at least as old as I am may recall that during the late 1960s and early 1970s, seemingly tens of thousands of so-called hippies and other young people were turning to faith in Jesus Christ throughout our country and indeed in various other countries of the world. However, as I continued reading, I found that what I was far less familiar with was a group of people Time Magazine referred to as the stormtroopers of the Jesus revolution, its most forceful and most criticized zealots. For example, in this book, the author writes, and again I quote, the Jesus movement includes such a broad gamut that it's hard to know how to peg it. On the whole, it is a refreshing revival of simple Christianity. On the fringes of the movement are some distressing aspects. One of the fringe groups that has been growing at an aggressively rapid pace has been the children of God. And again, the author quotes, the children of God make two basic assumptions. Number one, that the whore of Babylon, spoken of in the book of Revelation, can be identified with today's Christian church. And number two, the Great Tribulation is practically here. All their distinctive characteristics hinge on these two points." Now friends, I share this bit of historical information with you for primarily two reasons. Reason number one is to convey to us the sense that, in a certain sense, Some things never change. Some things never change. In ecclesiastical circles, for example, indeed, even among those who would call themselves a part of historical, classic Christianity, there are also today certain fringe elements at work. Just as there were in the 60s and 1970s. And interestingly enough, just as was also true in the days of the Apostle John, as is evidenced, for example, by the fact that in 1 John 2, verse 19, the Holy Spirit-inspired Apostle declares, they went out from us, but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us. But their going showed that none of them belonged to us. That's reason number one. But the second reason why I share that bit of historical information with you is to make absolutely certain that we do not confuse the radical fringe element of the Jesus Revolution, which was prevalent in the 1960s and 1970s, with that which we read in the words of our text for tonight. For indeed, as we work our way through the words of 1 John 3, verses 1-3, we find that far from being some sort of fringe element of the faith, far from being some sort of ecclesiastical outcast, if you will. Our text teaches us in no uncertain terms that because of the great love, the great love which our Heavenly Father has made supremely manifest to us in Jesus Christ, all true Christians everywhere, that is, all those who by the grace and mercy of God sincerely repent of their sins and profess faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, can count on the fact that according to the uncompromising, unchanging, eternal Word of the living God, they will inherit in time, and for all eternity, the bountiful blessings of being children of God. Children of God. Now, as we consider then this theme from a proper biblical perspective, Let us notice, first of all, that the very fact that there are children of God is rooted in paternal passion. The very fact that there are children of God is rooted in paternal passion. How so? Look at verse 1 of 1 John 3 with me, if you would please. Here we read, how great, the NIV drops an exclamation word there. Literally it says, behold, or look, or see. It's an imperative in the original language. Behold how great, the King James says, behold what manner. Behold how great is the love. It is indeed that word agape. It's a term, boys and girls, that refers to a very selfless, sacrificial, unconditional, no strings attached, a servant kind of love. It isn't a love that says, I love you because, or I will love you if, or I will love you until, or I will love you when. It's a love that just says, I love you. No strings attached. I love you, period. How great is the agape. How great is the love the Father, the First Person of the Blessed Trinity, God our Heavenly Father. How great is the love the Father has lavished on us. King James Version says, has bestowed on us. The great reformer John Calvin says, bestowed from mere bounty and benevolence. Bestowed from mere bounty and benevolence. That's the essence of agape love. And friends, it's also interesting to note that that word lavished or bestowed in the original language is in the perfect tense. Now that means God is referring here to a one-time past action that has an ongoing, enduring effect. John is referring here to the cross of Christ. And the very tense of that verb tells us in no uncertain terms that Jesus Christ and the cross of Christ is in fact the gift that keeps on giving. It is the gift that keeps on giving. Because you see, it is only through the shed blood of Christ on Calvary, that by God's grace, through faith in Him, our sins are forgiven us. Our oppressive guilt, with which Satan continually seeks to weigh us down, is once and for all removed. It is by the grace and mercy of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, that the perfect sinlessness and righteousness of Christ is credited to our account. It is imputed to us. With the result, our text goes on to teach us that we should be called, the Apostle Paul says in Romans 8.30, and those he predestined, he also called, stay with me, that we should be called, not sons, as the King James translates the term, that would be the Greek word hwios, it's the word tekna, children. Sons and daughters, if you will. In fact, I think that's corrected in the New King James Version, that we should be called children of God. That we should be called children of God. Then if you've got a King James, stay with me. The next few words are not in your translation. It's because of a variant reading and some ancient manuscripts of two simple Greek words. But the NIV and many other translations add. And that is what we are. And that is what we are. And that is what we are. Think about that, that we are children of God. You know, just yesterday, my family and I received a phone call from Indiana. We had a phone call from our a Mid-America Reform Seminary, a summer intern, Drew Enegenberg, announcing that the day before, on Friday, his dear wife, Anna Leah, had given birth to a precious baby girl. And Drew told my wife that they named that precious baby girl, are you ready? Poppy Allison Enegenberg. Little baby girl. Poppy Allison Enegenberg. It's quite a name, isn't it? Boys and Girls for Precious Little Girl. And they're happy and excited. Praise be to God. A healthy, safe, long delivery. But boys and girls, just as is true for Poppy Allison Ettingenberg, so too for each and every one of you. Your mom and dad, when you were born or when you were literally chosen, you were selected, you were adopted, perhaps. Your mom and dad put their name on you. They named you. And they made it unequivocally clear that you were part of their family. You bore their name. The name they gave you. And my young friends, brothers and sisters, that exact same thing is true spiritually when we become members of the family of God. In fact, turn to John chapter 1 with me if you would please. The Gospel according to John. Matthew, Mark, Luke, John chapter 1. John 1, concerning our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, God incarnate, God in the flesh. In John 1, verses 10-13, notice what the Apostle John declares. John 1, beginning in verse 10, speaking of our Lord. He says, He was in the world, and though the world was made through Him, the world did not recognize Him. He came to that which was His own, but His own did not receive Him. Yet to all who received Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God. Children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision, or a husband's will, but born of God, you see. Now turn to Romans chapter 8 with me, if you would please, in similar fashion. Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Acts, Romans, chapter 8, verses 15 and 16. In Romans chapter 8, verses 15 and 16, the Apostle Paul declares, For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, But you receive the Spirit of Sonship. And by Him we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. We are children of God. And finally on this score, turn with me please to Galatians chapter 4. Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians. Galatians chapter 4 verses 4-7. Galatians 4 verses 4-7. These verses were part of the Sunday School program this morning, the Christmas program. But when the time had fully come, God sent His Son, born of a woman, born under law, to redeem those under law that we might receive the full rights of sons. Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, Abba, Father. So you are no longer a slave, but a son. And since you are a son, God has made you also an heir. We are heirs in the family of God. Go back to the words of our text, and with me, if you would please, where once again, we read, Behold, look, see, how great is the love the Father has lavished on us that we should be called children of God. And that is what we are. And that is what we are. Indeed, the fact that any of us are children of God is rooted in God's love. It is rooted in paternal passion. It is rooted in paternal passion. Now, secondly, our text teaches us that whenever we profess faith in Christ as children of God, it results in a practical problem. It results in a practical problem. How so? Well, look at verse 1 of our text with me again, if you would please. How great is the love the Father has lavished on us that we should be called children of God. And that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us, Christian, is that it did not know Him. Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The reason the world does not know us, you and me, as Christians, is that it did not know Him. And brothers and sisters, did not our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ warn us that this is precisely what would take place? In fact, turn back with me once again, if you would please, to the Gospel according to John 15. In John 15, verses 18-21, John 15, 18-21, our Lord Jesus is speaking to His disciples. And in John 15, beginning in verse 18, He says, if the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated Me first. If you belong to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you. Remember the words I spoke to you. No servant is greater than his master. If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also. They will treat you this way because of my name. They do not know the one who sent me. Indeed, that is why nationally, internationally renowned preacher and Bible teacher, Dr. John MacArthur writes in his commentary on our text, and I quote, the real aliens in the world are not extraterrestrials, but Christians. I'm going to say that again. Dr. John MacArthur says, the real aliens in the world are not extraterrestrials, but Christians. And that's true. And that's why, brothers and sisters, you and I as Christians need to continually check up on ourselves to make absolutely certain that we are not feeling too at home. in this world. It's a good way to take spiritual inventory. You're driving along, you're going for a walk or a jog or whatever, you can ask yourself, hmm, do I dress the way the world dresses? Do I talk the way the world talks? Do I laugh at the things the world thinks are funny? Is my entertainment the same entertainment as my non-Christian friends? Do I spend my money the same way the world does? Are my priorities the same as my unbelieving neighbors? Do I spend the Lord's Day the way my unbelieving co-workers do? Is there anything different about me as far as stewardship of my time, my values? The kind of husband I am, the kind of wife I am, the kind of mother I am, the kind of father I am, the kind of son or daughter I am, the kind of brother or sister I am. Or do we look like worldlings? Do we really blend in well with the people and the things and the ways of this world? Young people, think about that. Think about that. In James chapter 4, verse 4, James, the brother of our Lord, declared, you adulterous people, don't you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. And what that means, young people, is that you can't have it both ways. You can't have one foot in the church with the Lord and the other in the world with your friends. You can't have it both ways. Jesus says you're one or the other. God says in Revelation that I wish you were hot or cold, but because you are lukewarm, I'll spit you out of my mouth. Now, that is why in Hebrews 11, if you would turn with me there, it's just a few pages before our scripture reading, before the book of James, that is why in Hebrews 11, verse 13, we are given this insight concerning these great heroes of the faith. We have here the Heroes Hall of Fame, the Faith Hall of Fame, if you will, in Hebrews 11, great faith chapter. And in Hebrews 11, verse 13, we read, all these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised. They only saw them and welcomed them from a distance. And they admitted that they were aliens and strangers on earth." If you've got your own Bible, underscore those words. Aliens and strangers on earth. Now in similar fashion, just a few pages before our Scripture reading, in 1 Peter 2, look with me please. In 1 Peter 2, verses 11 and 12, Peter writes again, Dear friends, I urge you as aliens, and strangers in the world to abstain from sinful desires which war against your soul. Live such good lives among the pagans that though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day He visits us." In fact, you know, friends, it's interesting. Back in Matthew chapter 16, and if you would turn there with me just for a moment in Matthew, chapter 16, 13 and following, we read the very fascinating account of Jesus coming into the region of Caesarea Philippi and he asked his disciples, who do people say the son of man is? Who do people say that I am? And in Matthew 16, 14, they replied, Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets. But what about you? He asked, Who do you say I am? And friends, that's the most important question any of us will have to answer. Who is Jesus Christ to you? Simon Peter answered, You are the Christ. the Son of the living God." Jesus replied, "'Blessed are you, Simon, son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by My Father in heaven. And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.'" Now, but notice verse 21, please. "'From that time on, Jesus began to explain to His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests, and teachers of the law, and that He must be killed, and on the third day be raised to life. Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him. Never, Lord, He said. This shall never happen to You. Jesus turned and said to Peter, Get behind Me, Satan. You are a stumbling block to Me. You do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men." Friends, think about that. Peter had just made this glorious confession. You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. The confession upon which Jesus said He would build His church. And no sooner, Does Peter make that confession? And Satan seduces him into trying to get Jesus to wear the crown without going the way of the cross. And Ben and Josh and Marilyn and all those who have ever publicly professed faith in Christ as Lord and Savior, listen. Satan will continually attempt to seduce you and me in that very same way time and time and time again. Especially when we take a public stand for Christ. Especially at those times when we have taken a public stand for Christ. At school or in the workplace. Especially when we have seemingly been used of God for some great purpose for the cause of His Kingdom. Especially then. He will try to get us to believe that we can wear the crown without going the way of the cross. He will try to seduce us with what the Apostle John calls in 1 John 2.16, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the boastful pride of life. And brothers and sisters, that is why you and I must continually remind ourselves of what our Lord Jesus said in Matthew 10, 32 and 33, for example, when Jesus said, whoever acknowledges Me before men, I will also acknowledge him before My Father in heaven. But whoever disowns Me before men, I will disown him before My Father in heaven. Verse 37, same chapter, Matthew 10, anyone who loves his father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me, Jesus said. Anyone who loves his son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. And anyone who does not take his cross and follow Me is not worthy of Me. Whoever finds his life..." We talked recently about going to find yourself. Whoever finds his life will lose it. And whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. How great is the love the Father has lavished on us that we should be called children of God. And that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know Him. It does not know us because it did not know Him. Being children of God is indeed rooted in paternal passion. But consequently, as far as our relationship with the world is concerned, it also results in a practical problem. It results in a practical problem. Ah, but now notice. Thirdly, however, our text calls and encourages all true children of God to rejoice in a precious promise. To rejoice in a precious promise. Look at v. 2 of 1 John 3 with me, if you would please. Dear friends, beloved, the original says, dearly loved, now we are children of God. If you're a Christian, claim this text as your own and think about the implications. Dear friends, now, already today, right here tonight, now, we are children of God. We are children of God. We are sons and daughters of God. Meaning, for example, that we know, as children of God, that our sins are forgiven. And that according to Jeremiah 31 verse 34, God remembers them no more. And how dare we allow Satan to remind us of past sins when God Himself says He remembers them no more. Glory be to God. We are children of God. We know that our sins are forgiven. We know that when our Lord Jesus ascended on high, He poured out His Holy Spirit, the Comforter, the Counselor, the Paraclete upon the church so that we would not be left alone. We would not be left as orphans. This Holy Spirit would continually minister to us and give us what the Apostle Paul calls in Philippians 4 A peace that passes all understanding. As children of God, we know that any moment of any day we can come to Him in prayer and knowing that in Jesus' name we are heard in heaven. As children of God, we know that He has gone ahead of us to prepare a place for us. And that He will come back to take us to be with Him so that we may be where He is. John 14. You know, in Matthew 7, verse 11, Jesus again is speaking to His disciples. And in Matthew 7, verse 11, Jesus says, If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children... Moms and dads, are you buying Christmas presents? We know how to give good gifts to our children. But Jesus says, If we, though we are evil, though we are sinful beings, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in Heaven give good gifts to those who ask Him? Jesus says, you have not because you ask not. Talk about Christmas presents. God, our Heavenly Father, wants to give us, His children, all good gifts. Praise be to His holy name. Praise be to His holy name. Our text continues in verse 2. Look with me again. Dear friends, now we are children of God. And what we will be has not yet been made known. Literally, the Greek says it has not yet appeared. But we will be, as not yet been made known. You've heard the expression, the best is yet to come? Well, that's true for anyone. That's true for Christians especially. The best is yet to come. Why so? Well, our text goes on to teach us. But we know that when He appears, we shall be like Him. We will not be equal to Him. We shall be like Him. Writes one commentator, and I quote, as much as glorified humanity can be like incarnate deity without becoming deity. That's what we'll become. We will be like Him. For we shall see Him as He is. Don't you long for that day. In fact, turn with me if you would please just back several pages to 1 Corinthians 2 where the Apostle Paul speaks of that day. In 1 Corinthians 2, verses 8-10, the Apostle Paul declares, None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. However, as it is written, No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love Him. But God has revealed it to us by His Spirit. Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians. Turn to Philippians 3 with me, please, along the same theme. Philippians 3, beginning in verse 18, Paul says, For as I have often told you before and now say again, even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their destiny is destruction, their God is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Do you know people like that? I do. Their mind is on earthly things. But our citizenship, children of God, is in heaven, and we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who by the power that enables Him to bring everything under His control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like His glorious body. Therefore, my brothers, you whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, that is how you should stand firm in the Lord, dear friends. And finally on this score, a few pages to the right, Colossians 3, 1-4. Colossians 3, beginning at verse 1, Paul says, "...Since then you have been raised with Christ." Set your hearts on things above where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also, Christian, fill your name in the blank. You also will appear with Him in glory. You also. will appear with Him in glory. Being children of God, brothers and sisters, at least in part, means that we must rejoice in this precious promise. We must rejoice in this precious promise. Now, fourthly and finally, our text teaches us that being children of God, listen, requires personal purity. It requires personal purity. For indeed, look at verse 3 of 1 John 3 with me if you would please. Here we read, everyone, none accepted, everyone who has this hope in Him. Which hope? The hope of today, even now being children of God. The hope of realizing that what we will be has not yet been made known. But knowing that when He appears, we will be like Him because we will see Him as He is. That hope. Everyone who has this hope in Him, command, purifies themselves. purifies himself. The Greek could be translated to make pure, or to cleanse, or to set apart, to sanctify, to consecrate as holy. In the original language, it has a sense of ongoing, continuous action, writes Matthew Henry, and I quote, as we are sanctified by faith, we must be sanctified by hope. I'm going to read that again. As we are sanctified by faith, we must be sanctified by hope. In other words, our standing with God in Christ as His children ought to move us and motivate us to increasingly be a holy, pure, cleansed, clean people. Being children of God today ought to move and motivate us out of gratitude to God to prepare for what we will inherit tomorrow. Someone said to me at the door a few weeks ago after a morning worship service, this great, great quote. I think they heard it somewhere, read it somewhere. They said, as Christians, we are in training for reigning. That's very good. We are in training for reigning. We must be preparing today for what we will inherit tomorrow. We are in training for reigning. Everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself. Just as He, that is Christ, is pure. Just as He is pure. Jesus said in Matthew 5.48, Be perfect therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect. And in 2 Corinthians 7, verse 1, the Apostle Paul declares, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God. What do you need to clean out of your life? What do I need to clean out of my life that would make us purer people for God? And finally on this score, in 1 Peter 1, 1 Peter chapter 1, right near our Scripture reading, verses 14-16, 1 Peter 1, verses 14-16, the Apostle Peter declares, As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just to see who called you is holy. So be holy in all you do. For as it is written, Be holy, because I am holy. Being children of God, brothers and sisters, requires personal purity. It requires personal purity. You know, as I'm sure is true for virtually each and every other parent here tonight, and as Pastor Van Dyck said so eloquently this morning, I continue to stand amazed at how quickly time passes by. I continue to be amazed at how quickly, for example, our children are grown and gone. Moms and dads, isn't it true? Grandparents, it seems to go like that. It goes like that. In fact, I can recall when my son Ben, who now towers over me, and he didn't know I was going to say this, was just a little baby. Just as I did with all of our other, of our seven children. I used to go up to Ben and I'd say, how much does Daddy love you? This much. How much does Daddy love you? This much. When he sent his son into this world, To be born of a virgin. To suffer and die on a cross. God, our Heavenly Father, was saying to you and to me, how much does Daddy love you? This much. And so, friends, is it any wonder that nearly 2,000 years ago, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the Apostle John declared, behold, how great is the love the Father has lavished on us that we should be called children of God. Amen. Let's bow our heads and our hearts together in prayer. This is how God showed His love among us. He sent His one and only Son into the world that we might live through Him. This is love. Not that we loved God, but that He loved us. And sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. O, our mighty and merciful God and most holy Heavenly Father, because of Your great love for us, supremely made manifest in the sending of Your only begotten Son, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, born of a virgin, laid in a manger, crucified on a cross. Grant to each and every one of us the grace, we pray, each and every day, to profess faith in Thee with our lips as well as with our lives, so that by Thy sovereign saving grace and electing love and through our testimony to the truth, others too may become in time and for all eternity the blessed beneficiaries of being children of God. Hear us, Lord, we pray, for Jesus' sake. Amen.
Children of God
The great love which our heavenly Father has supremely made manifest to us in Christ has resulted in the fact that all those who by His grace profess faith in the Name of His Son have become, for time and for all eternity, Children of God.
