Dear congregation, this morning we heard about how Christ poured out his Holy Spirit. And what a gift that is. Imagine if you had every other gift, but you didn't have the Holy Spirit, what would you have? But if you have the Holy Spirit, the Spirit who binds you to Christ, then you have everything. What's it look like? What's it look like to have the Holy Spirit? And what's it look like to live out of the grace of the Holy Spirit that's been poured out at Pentecost? There's many different aspects that could be brought out, but here in Romans 8, we see a certain aspect, which is very fundamental, very at the heart of what it is to live out of the grace of the Holy Spirit, and that is to have a spiritual mind. It's not in the first place just about what you do or what you don't do, but the Spirit living in your heart changes, first of all, your heart. And that's something that you then need continually. This spirit working in your heart, working in your mind, giving you a spiritual mind. What does that look like? Why is that so valuable? Why is that so desirable? To have this spiritual mindedness, which is so important also today. Well, let's listen this evening, this afternoon, to these verses five and six under the theme, the spirit worked spiritual mind. The spirit worked spiritual mind. First, the focus. this mind. Second, the ruler of this mind. And third, the enjoyment. The spirit-worked spiritual mind, the focus, the ruler, and the enjoyment of the spiritual mindedness. We've opened our Bibles to the book of, or the epistle to the Romans, and this is a glorious epistle, so full of rich instruction. It begins, doesn't it, of the setting forth the gospel, and then it goes on to speak of how Depraved, how corrupt, how sinful we are in those chapters, the end of one and two and three. It, so to speak, levels us and leaves us without hope in ourselves. But then in chapters four and five and six and seven, It shows this wondrous doctrine that God justifies the ungodly, that God declares those who are sinful to be righteous in his sight. He does so be for the sake of the Lord Jesus Christ, whose blood washes that sin away and whose righteousness covers in his sight so that you're right with God. And then it goes on to show what the benefits of such grace are in the next chapters. And that climax is also here in Romans 8, that very well-known chapter, a chapter loved by God's people, especially throughout the ages, a chapter so rich with the grace of God, a chapter beginning with those well-known words, there is now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus. And now, who are in Christ Jesus? Notice what it says. Those who walk not according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. Who are in Christ. Those who have the Spirit. And what does the Spirit give? A spiritual mind. Our text speaks of a spiritual mind. The mind is where we think. It's our inside that thinks and imagines and is inclined to things. And that Greek word for mind is not just purely notional, having ideas, but it's even where we have our desires. For the things that we think about, our mind is what goes on inside us. What fills your mind. Usually we think our mind is just like a sponge and whatever is out there around us is what seeps into our mind and fills our mind. And so if we're in difficulty, our minds are filled with the difficulties. And if we receive a wonderful gift, then our mind is filled with that wonderful gift. If we hear news, then our mind is filled with that news. And we can think of our mind as just this empty bucket or this sponge, and whatever's outside us and comes into our ears, that fills our minds. But it's not our circumstances that determine how our mind is, what fills our minds. Because it's about how we process what we hear. What we do with what we hear, what we see, what goes on around us. At bottom, there's two types of minds. We can talk of having a dull mind or a clear mind or a quick mind or all kinds of different types of minds. But here in this text, there's just two types of minds, to be carnally minded, to be spiritually minded, the carnal and the spiritual. A carnal mind here is a mind of those who do mind the things of the flesh. Actually, carnal, carnis, comes from the Latin word for flesh. So a carnal mind is a fleshly mind. What is that carnal mind? It comes to mind. Maybe you think of a dirty mind. A mind that is full of unclean imaginations and unclean thoughts and fantasies, which feeds on what's unclean. And that's true. It's a carnal mind. Galatians 5 says, the works of the flesh are adultery and fornication. That's of the flesh, and a mind of the flesh is, can be in that way. What else is a carnal mind? Someone can think of a violent mind or someone who feeds on violence and enjoys violence or harbors revenge or bitterness or spite towards others. And that shows in their lives. And it's true. God counts violent thoughts as murder. And that's also the working of the flesh. envying, strife, murders. What else is a carnal mind? Someone else can think of a mind that's full of lies and deceits, a mind that escapes reality in some virtual world, or a mind that's plotting and scheming how to get ahead through dishonest means, a mind that is full of thinking what he can get away with and not full of truth. Yes, it's true that that's also a carnal mind. 2 Timothy 3 says the natural men are deceiving and being deceived. What else is a carnal mind? What about an honest, hardworking man? Can he still have a carnal mind? If he's only focused on the things of this earth, if he only thinks about the things of this earth, which may be all lawful in themselves, his work, his income, his expenses, his family, his home, his weekend, his hobbies, his outings, his vacations, his whatever, but he's just thinking about only the things of this earth, then it's a carnal mind still. Philippians 3 speaks of those who simply mind earthly things, the things of this earth, carnal mind. What about a religious person? Can you have a carnal mind and still be very religious? Martin Luther said, you should learn to call him fleshly, who thinks, teaches, and talks a great deal about high spiritual matters. You say, is that a fleshly thing? But without grace. He says in Romans 8, flesh does not refer simply to unchastity or uncleanness, but to all sins above all to unbelief, which is the most serious of all vices. The one who may be very religious and yet living in unbelief still only has a carnal mind, even though he can talk about the things of the Bible. So what is a carnal mind? It's the mind of one who only thinks about the things of this earth as if only the things of this earth are real and not spiritual things. It's to be spiritually blinded so that you don't see spiritual reality. In 1 Corinthians 2.14, it says, the natural man receives not the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness unto him. Neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. And so it's a mind that doesn't see the things not seen. And so it's a mind that's bent towards sin. and not to God. It's a mind that's corrupted by sin, a mind that's not subject to God, a mind that's like a unclean fountain that produces an unclean life. Is that your mind? Just carnal, nothing more? Or is it different? The word of God here also speaks of a spiritual mind. spiritual mind that minds, it says, the things of the Spirit. A mind that's set on the things revealed in the Word of God by the Holy Spirit. This is a mind, first of all, that's enlightened to see spiritual reality. If someone has never been to the mountains, they can read about the mountains and they can tell how high the elevation of the different mountains are. And they can talk about the mountains. But it doesn't mean much to them because they've never even seen a picture of it. They've just read descriptions of mountains. But someone who comes into the mountains and stands there and sees them, they see all those things they've learned about. But it becomes so different, doesn't it? The spiritual mind minds the things of the Spirit. Those things revealed in the Word of God are real to you, are breathtaking to you. Because the Spirit opens our eyes to see the reality that we can't see with our physical eyes. The Lord Jesus said in John 3, except ye be born again, you cannot see the kingdom of God. Without that new birth, we don't see it, but with that new birth, we see the kingdom of God's, so great, so real. Our mind is set on it. Think of Peter, when Jesus asked him, who do you say that I am? Then he said, thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus said, flesh and blood is not revealed to this to you, but my Father which is in heaven, by his Spirit he reveals, he convinces in the depths of your heart that what he says is true, that Jesus is the Christ. You realize that what you see with your physical eyes, yes, it's all real, but it's nothing compared to the realities that are revealed in the Word of God. The spiritual mind minds the things of the Spirit. And it's not just a seeing of them, but a spiritual mind is also bent towards them because it desires them. If you think of this world as a sea, then the natural mind is like a stone that sinks down into the mud of this world. But a spiritual mind is like a cork that wants to go up to the surface. Yes, still in this world, and that's all real, but up to see those things not seen above. spiritual mind, because it sees them, desires them, and wants them, and is bent on them. It's about the direction of our heart. It's not as if If you're a tradesman, you're unspiritual because you have to think about your trade and what you have to do and everything else. And if you're a minister, then you have a spiritual mind because you have to study the word of God. A minister could be very unspiritual because he only studies the word of God because he has to. That's not a spiritual mind. And there can be a tradesman who, yes, has his trade, and sometimes he has to be very focused on what he's doing, or when he talks to other people, but in the midst of his trade, there's also those times when his heart goes out unto God, and his mind goes out unto God, and unto the word that he's read, and the word he's heard. His heart goes out there because he has a spiritual mind that minds the things of the Spirit throughout the day. Where does this heart go? It's to God. That's why it's this basic, basic question for us, isn't it? Where does your mind go when it doesn't have to go anywhere? Where's the bend of your mind when you don't have to think about anything in particular? When you're driving, where does it go? When you're alone, where does it go? Is it a minding simply of the things of this earth? Or is it a minding of the things of God? The spiritual mind is set on the things of the Spirit. on those things that are so real, so great, so much greater than all those other things that we may be busy with and we do have to have in our mind as we fulfill our daily calling. Where's your heart go? Your mind go? With a spiritual mind that goes out to God then the things that happen in a day don't distract from God, but direct to God. Then the pleasant surprise you have in that day doesn't make you think just about how wonderful I got this, but it draws you back to God, the source of it. Then those difficulties you go through in your day, They don't just fixate your mind and that you have to solve them on your own and figure it out. But those very difficulties on your mind, yes, they may go whirl around in your mind, but in the end, they drive you out to God as a source of all help in the midst of them when you don't know what to do. Then also when you miss others, and yes, you miss them, and yes, you think about them, and yet the spiritual mind with that missing is drawn out to God. and minds the things of the spirit. What does God say to me in this situation? What light does God's word shed in this situation? And also when temptation comes, the spiritual mind may feel that temptation, but it drives it out to God and to the things of the spirit that enable to stand and keep from falling See, circumstances don't just pour into our minds and make it swirl around and forget God. In the spiritual mind, the circumstances direct out to God and the things of the Spirit of God. Why does a spiritual mind bend toward those spiritual things? It's because it not only sees and not only desires, but it also delights in these things. Isn't that what the psalmist found? He said that he delighted in the word of God. That's the things of the spirit of God. More than someone who finds great treasure, more than, and it's sweeter than honey and the honeycomb. Martin Luther said about the epistle to the Romans, he said, it can never be read or pondered too much, and the more it is dealt with, the more precious it becomes, and the better it tastes. If you tasted the word of God. as it tasted like grace, as it tasted sweet, as it tasted so delightful. The spiritual mind minds the things of the Spirit of God because it values them and it tastes them and it delights in them. It doesn't just say, oh, I do have to think about God every day. As a burden, another check off on your list, I have to think about God every day. but it's drawn to God in love. That's why the spiritual mindedness isn't just focused on spiritual things as if it's just a number of things to think about, but it's about God himself as he reveals himself by his Holy Spirit. That's what gives delight. Do you see what a contrast? That carnal mind, that spiritual mind, that carnal mind bent towards sin, that carnal mind bent to things which may be lawful in themselves, but that's all it's focused on, the things of this earth, and it's nothing other than spiritual idolatry, but the spiritual mind that's bent towards God and the things revealed in the word of God by the Spirit of God, carnal mind seeks its happiness here below, but the spiritual mind seeks its delight in God's." See, two different foci. What's the focus of your mind? What's the focus of your heart? Carnal? Spiritual? And I only read two possibilities in this text, carnal, spiritual. I don't read of all kinds of different options and variations, one or the other. And maybe you push away that question because you don't dare say you have a spiritual mind, but you don't want to think of yourself as having a carnal mind, but there's no middle ground. It's one or the other. If that description of a spiritual mind is just words to you, but your mind is not drawn to the things of God, you haven't come to value and desire and delight in the things of God, and so turn from sin and life without, you just live without reference to God, then what reason to fear you only have a carnal mind? But if spiritual things have a drawing power, if the things of God and his Christ have become real to you, and they've become more important to you than anything else you can think about, and you've come to value these things as more valuable than anything else you can occupy your mind and heart with, and your heart is drawn out to them, that that is where you will find your joy and satisfaction. Is that not because God has given you a spiritual mind? But maybe someone sits here and reflects and says, but when I look at my, when I reflect on my mind and my heart and what goes through it, then how do I dare say I have just a spiritual mind and I don't have a carnal mind? You see carnality. You see earthly mindedness. You see sinful thoughts. within you, sinful directions within your mind. Does that bother you? You say, what do I have? Is it carnal? Is it spiritual? You think of how Paul wrote here so clearly. But the carnal mind, the spiritual mind, so black and white, And let's ask Paul, Paul, what kind of mind do you have? You say, well, certainly Paul had a spiritual mind. Paul, describe what goes on inside your heart. Paul said, haven't you listened? I just did in Romans 7. I described what went on inside my heart. He said, I am carnal. Paul, you're carnal. Does that mean you just have a carnal mind and you don't have a spiritual mind and you're just talking here about a spiritual mind that you don't know anything of personally? Are you just a carnal mind then? No, he says I have a delight in the law of God, spiritual mind. and yet he found still so much of the flesh within him, and that burdened him, and that troubled him, and that made him say, O wretched man that I am, who shall deliver me? This is a paradox, that exactly if God has given you a spiritual mind, you'll be very sensitive to the reality of the presence of carnality within your mind. And the more real God becomes to you, the more real sin becomes against such a God, in the sense that you see it and it troubles you. and it burdens you, and you say, oh, wretched man that I am. Why is my whole mind, why is my whole heart not all bent on God and bent on his word and delighting in him? Why does it go different directions? And that was the struggle that Paul found himself to be in in Romans 7. It's a reality, but it's a reality in one who's received the spiritual mind. And that makes us realize how much, even if we've received a spiritual mind, we need that grace continually to renew our minds. And that's what our focus is in our second point. The spirit works spiritual mind, not only the focus of such a mind, but also the ruler of such a mind. We've seen what the carnal and the spiritual mind looks like. But what makes the carnal mind what it is? And what makes the spiritual mind what it is? Who is behind them? Who rules them? The carnal mind is ruled by the flesh. Flesh is not just our physical existence. We're made of flesh and bones, a physical body. But in scripture, flesh sometimes means that. But in a context like Romans 8, flesh here is not our physical body versus our soul, but it's our corrupt nature. It's our sinful nature in contrast to what the Spirit works when He makes things new. And so verse five speaks of those that are after the flesh and according to the flesh. What they do is according to the flesh. The flesh is the dictator and they do his wishes. The ruler of a carnal mind. is that corrupt flesh that dictates what is to be done and what is to be thought. And what a terrible thing that flesh is, because look at verse seven, the carnal mind is enmity against God, for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be, so that they who are in the flesh cannot please God. That's devastating. The carnal mind, the mind with which we were born, apart from the grace of God, it says is enmity against God. It's rebellion against God. There's nothing more devastating than that. There's no worse description than that. And yet that's what the word of God is teaching here. That is the carnal mind. Enmity against God. And so, this shows what a terrible thing it is to have such a mind. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God. And that's something we don't like to admit, do we? We don't like to admit that it's really that bad with us, apart from the grace of God. Hrishasemiti. But our very resistance to that teaching of the Word of God shows our enmity. Because when we resist that, we're resisting the message of God to us. And that's an act of rebellion against God in itself. And that just confirms that we don't naturally submit to God. And that's also why Our corrupt flesh cannot change itself. If our corrupt flesh is enmity, enmity cannot change itself into love. It's impossible. You can try. It'll never work. If an apple is rotten, that rotten apple can't make itself fresh and crunchy. It can't. Sometimes we think we can. We can realize, yes, I've done this wrong, and I've done that wrong, and I have to stop this sin or stop that sin, and you try to, and you stop, and you, but that corruption seeps through again, and again, and you fail, and you're discouraged. You think, why do I fail? I'm trying to do what's right, and that's good. That's good to desire and try to do what's right and to put off all sin, but you cannot cut off all the corruption of your being, of yourself. You need another. You need the Spirit. The Holy Spirit. Only the Spirit is great enough to make a carnal mind a spiritual mind. Only He is great enough to take those who walk according to the flesh to become ones that are according to the Spirit and governed by the Spirit. Only the Spirit Himself can overcome that rule of the corrupt flesh in your heart and in your life to be ruled by the Holy Spirit and walk according to Him. Isn't that something to confess before God? If you have found your flesh too strong for you, confess it to God. Confess it to this Savior, the Savior who, as we heard this morning, is exalted to give his Holy Spirit freely, graciously, to those who on their own are just hatred against God. That's exactly the ones he comes to, who can't change and improve themselves to be good enough for God. But he's mightier than your flesh. He's almighty, he's divine, and he cares more about you than your flesh does. Flesh wants to maintain itself and not surrender, not submit to God, but the Holy Spirit is far more loving. He's bent on your salvation, on your life, and he's the one who delights to overcome all that resistance. and to bring to the feet of Christ for mercy, for pardon, for all that uncleanness, all that sinfulness of my very mind that that brings to Christ. Isn't that our first need? Not simply to do less sin, to be freed from sin in the sight of God. Isn't that what makes the gospel of Romans so glorious? Christ came for enemies, Romans 5 says, and he died for such in order to save such and deliver such from that bondage to sin, from that guilt of sin, to be made right with God and also to be freed from that bondage to sin This is what Christ came to do. He is the one, in verse two, or verse three, that he came in the likeness of sinful flesh. in the appearance of sinful flesh. That's how he came and was condemned as if he were sinful flesh so that those who are sinful flesh could be delivered from all their guilt and released from that bondage, released from that terrible master of my sinful flesh in order to belong to Christ and belonging to Christ to receive the spirit of Christ. This is what Christ promises to do. This is what Christ delights to do. Do you believe that? Do you believe that? However powerful the flesh may seem, do you believe that Christ is stronger than the power of corruption and sin? To forgive and to deliver from its power. This is the one to go to. This is the one who renews. The Spirit gives a spiritual mind. It's all the fruit of the work of the Spirit. So gracious and so powerful. How else can you explain a mind that sees the things we can't see with our physical eyes? It's the Spirit who opens our eyes to see. What reason we have to be thankful there's an Almighty Spirit who opens eyes to see so that you, can I say you get what He's saying in His Word. He makes things do, and He becomes the one who governs your heart, your mind, your life. Yes, there's still too much of the flesh, but the one who rules, if you belong to Christ, the one who rules is Christ by His Holy Spirit. He governs. He guides. He's the source of life. That's reality. You are one who is according to the Spirit, whom He's given a spiritual mind. Is that not something to marvel at? If that's what He's done in your life, God saw you, carnal, enmity against Him, and He showed you His mercy. He reached you, He saved you, He redeemed you, but He also renewed you by His Holy Spirit to mind the things of the Spirit. What a love, what a grace. Isn't that also such an encouragement in the present when you still find the power of sin within your mind and within your heart? Why may you pray what's on the sign in the front of the church, renew a right spirit within me? It's because the Spirit lives to do so, and delights to do so, and continues to do so, and will not give up, and will not let that corruption triumph in the end, and will not lose the victory in the end. He will continue and continue and continue because he's bent on making you spiritually minded. Those who live according to the Spirit mind the things of the Spirit. In verse five, it's a statement of fact. It's not even just an exhortation, this is what you should do, but it says this is what you do do. And the reason why I can say this is what you do do is because Christ will never save you without also renewing you and continuing to renew you. And that may be such an encouragement even in the midst of the struggle that you feel between the flesh and the spirit that can be so real. They that are after the Spirit do mind the things of the Spirit. Is that not something to bring back to God? Lord, this flesh, this corruption, this sin doesn't fit. Deliver from it. and fix me on the things of the Spirit, on the things of the Word, that I may see those wonders in the Word of God, that I may desire what He reveals in His Word, and that I may delight in the God who makes Himself known in His Word, and that so my heart would be fixed upon Him and bent towards Him and delight in Him as I go through this life with all its temptations and with all its trials and with all its pressures, that I may be fixed upon God. And if that is your prayer, then will you not also be busy filling your mind with the things of the Spirit? What are we filling our mind with? What are you filling your mind with on your fall? Or whatever else? Is it the things of the Spirit? If we desire to be spiritually minded, we must be busy with the things of the Spirit, the things of the Word of God. In what we read, what we see, what we speak about, do we also speak about these things to direct our minds together to the things of the Spirit of God? Those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. And that is so blessed, because to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. And so our final point is the spirit works spiritual mind, not only the focus and the ruler, but also the enjoyment. Did you hear it? To be carnally minded is death. To be spiritually minded is life and peace. Life and peace. In a sense, isn't that what everyone desires? Life, not death. Peace, not trouble. These are beautiful words for everyone. Life, peace. In a world full of conflict, in a world full of violence, in a world full of upheaval and turmoil, peace. In a world full of suffering and death, life. This is what a spiritual mind may enjoy, life. Who can express the value of life? Life, as John Owen puts it, life, a cheerful, joyful life, a life worth the living, true life. By the way, I just quoted John Owen because he is a book, Spiritual Mindedness, one of those Puritan paperbacks by Banner of Truth, which is well worth reading. But to come back to this life, Notice how verse nine says, to have the Spirit is to belong to Christ and to have life in him. He is the one who delivers from condemnation to death. And now there's no condemnation to death to those who are in Christ Jesus. Then you have life. Because if you don't have the Spirit, you don't belong to Christ, he says here. But if you have the Spirit, you belong to Christ and you have life in Christ. And what an unspeakable blessing that is. I have life. I have life everlasting. Because the Spirit is the one who is at bond with Christ, who is the life. To have the Spirit of Christ is to belong to Christ, to receive spiritual life also from Him, so that I don't just, I'm not just an heir to eternal life one day that I may enjoy, but I may have the beginning of that eternal life already now. Life in fellowship with God, the God of life, that's life. Or as the Lord Jesus puts it in John 17, this is life eternal, that they may know thee the only true God and Jesus Christ whom thou hast sent, life and peace. Peace with God. The Spirit of Christ glorifies Christ's perfect sacrifice, a mediatorial grace that reconciles to God. Romans 5 says, being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Peace. with God, that Almighty God, so glorious, so infinite, that God is not against me, that God is for me, that God is with me, because there's peace with God through Jesus Christ. What a gift that is. That's reality for those who are in Christ Jesus, and that's enjoyed. in the way of walking in the Spirit and being spiritually minded. You see, it's not about possessing, but also enjoying this life and peace. And maybe someone here says, how can I enjoy more of that spiritual life and that peace that's in Christ? It says it's in the way of being spiritually minded, in the way of being focused on the things of Christ that are revealed in the Word of God. And as the Spirit blesses that, and as you see what a Savior He is, oh, how that gives peace in your heart. And as you see He is indeed the life whose come that we might have life and may have it more abundantly, you enjoy more of that life. The more your mind is fixed on spiritual realities, the more you see of God's glory and Christ's beauty, and the more you desire them, and the more you will know and the more you will enjoy the comfort of life and peace in Christ, a true comfort, a solid comfort. In the midst of everything else that goes up and down and changes and is here today and gone tomorrow, minding the things of the Spirit, you see that God is God always. You see that God is a God to whom you are reconciled, to have him as a father who cares always to have him. as a God of grace. Yes, even in the midst of the troubles, in the midst of the afflictions that there may be. When Paul speaks of life and peace, it doesn't mean that his life was always peaceful and easy and a smooth sail. He was shipwrecked and he was beaten and he was stoned and he was imprisoned. And yet in the midst of it all, Where's the life and peace? It's not just, oh, if I was in a different circumstance and everything was going well in life, then I could have life and peace, no. It's, oh, that I would be more spiritually minded, that I'd see the reality of the things not seen. Because Paul says in 2 Corinthians 4 that when we see the things not seen, then the present afflictions become light in comparison to the eternal weight of glory. You see, spiritually minded gives life and peace even in the midst of difficulty and trial. gives courage in the midst of the spiritual battle, because as you mind the things of the Spirit, you realize what God promises is true and is real. And then when Christ says, in this world you will have tribulation, but fear not, I have overcome the world, as your mind is fixed upon that. It gives perspective in the midst of the spiritual battle, and that's also why Paul, even in the midst of the spiritual battle that he confessed in Romans 7, he could say, I thank God through Jesus Christ. There you see the Spirit leading him to see, to mind the things of Christ, and that enabled to endure even in the midst of that struggle in its reality. Oh truly, to be spiritually minded, that's life, that's peace. It's actually the only life, the only peace. Because apart from Christ and apart from his spirit fixing your mind upon Christ, what is there? There's only death. That's why it says here, to be carnally minded is death. It's to remain in spiritual death. It's to be under the sentence of death. It's to be on your way to eternal death. To just have your heart and your mind fixed on the sin of this world and go in that direction. To just fixed on the things of this world and not upon God. Is death death? Is that you? Still just a carnal mind? To be carnally minded is death. It's a word of God. To make you realize I need life. Life that's in Christ, life that flows from Christ by his Holy Spirit.
