There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Well, that's how the very first verse in Romans chapter 8 begins. Romans chapter 8 is considered by many to be one of the greatest chapters in all of Scripture. Not only does it start there with a reminder of the lack of condemnation, it ends with maybe one of the greatest expositions on God's love and His faithfulness. Let me just read that for you as well. What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but gave Him up for us all, how will He not also with Him graciously give us all things? Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died. More than that, who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword As it is written, for your sake we are being killed all the day long. We are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered. No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I'm sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God and Christ Jesus our Lord. Can you imagine any chapter in the Bible greater than a chapter that begins with the lack of condemnation and ends with an exposition of God's love? Well, there is a fantastic book, and I know I'm being a bit of a homer on this one, but I can't help it. It's been one of my favorite books for years, probably since it was released, and it's How the Gospel Brings Us All the Way Home by our own Derek Thomas. It is a great book. Too lengthy, it is just the right length, especially for those who are weary, as I know many of you are in this time of quarantine. And you get to hear Derek or read Derek's thoughts on the individual pieces of this fantastic chapter. And he makes almost every verse something you just want to hang your hat on and apply to your soul again and again. Now, a couple of bonuses. One, you can go and find some of Derek's lectures on this topic through Ligonier, and you can get them for free. Or secondly, if you're more of a book on tape sort of person, you can go to Audible and you can download this book, and it is Derek himself who is reading it. So for my suggestion for lockdown reading, or in this case, maybe even lockdown listening, it's Derek Thomas, How the Gospel Brings Us All the Way Home.
