you that marriage is work it I don't care what kind of shovel you hand somebody it's not an indication that there's a party about to start you hand somebody a shovel there's work to be done now it's not your normal present at a wedding but I think it'd be appropriate to hand them a shovel because there's work involved And so no matter where you are in life, in relationships, there's work involved. You have to work at it. It's not just going to happen. And so we're going to, yesterday we talked about the whole concept of marriage, and then we spent some time on conflicts. But today we want to talk about a topic that is found a lot in the Bible, not always related to marriage, but it's the topic of cash, money. And it, 15% of all the red words in your, if you have that kind of Bible, those are Jesus' words, 15% of all his words have something to do with money. 11 of the 40 parables he told Have something to do with money In the Gospels the first four books one out of every ten verses Have something to do there are more verses over 2,000 in the New Testament and the whole Bible, I mean Then there are there's more verses on money than there are on prayer and this is because Lot of things can come between you and God and one of them is money in Marriage, it shows up as those that save and those that spend Managing debt large purchases. It can cause stress in a marriage and in a family. There's emotional impact There's that guilt. There's that power struggle. There's the worry about it and then it affects communication so this morning I wanna be a simple person because I am simple. My mother was a school teacher and so that helps me with being simple. And you'll like even more that my dad was a Air Force pilot and he taught me, as Mark alluded to, how to land the plane. He'll even tell me, hey, don't miss a good runway. You know, don't keep circling. And he always taught me about landings. He said, listen, a good landing, you can walk away from. A great landing, you can use the plane again. So it's important for us to do that this morning. And so there's three things I'm gonna say about money this morning. There's three things you can do with your money. You can save it, you can spend it, or you can share it. And we want to look at those ideas using some Bible verses in saying, first of all, the first one. And that is your focus, your focus money and I I'm gonna turn to the book of Matthew the book of Matthew chapter 6 which is the middle chapter of three chapters the longest sermon recorded in the Bible by Jesus I have stood on that hill where he preached the Sermon on the Mount and but he preached and starting in chapter 6 starting in verse 28 we read this Why take thought for raiment consider the lilies of the field how they grow they toil and not neither do they spin and Yet I say unto you that even Solomon all his glory was not arrayed like one of these Verse 30 wherefore if God so clothed the grass of the field which is today and tomorrow is cast into the oven Shall not he more clothed you? Oh ye of little faith. I Therefore take no thought saying what shall we eat or what shall we drink or where we should be clothed? For after all these things do the Gentiles seek for your heavenly father knoweth that you have need of these things but seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will be added unto you Take therefore no thought for tomorrow for the morrow shall take the thought of itself sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof So if we're going to focus on money, we need to focus on it in the idea of how God looks at it. One of the things that happened in Europe during World War II was that They took a lot of children out of the large cities and transported them to the country to keep them safe. And then at the end of the war, when they brought them back, some of these kids' parents had died. And so there were a lot of kids that were running the streets, especially in London. And the story is told of these two GIs that are driving through this old part of town, and they heard there was a bakery that had opened back up. And so they found this bakery. And as they pulled up, there were two boys standing by the window looking into the bakery. And you know, if you've ever smelled fresh bread, those GIs got out of their Jeep, and they smelled that bread. They couldn't wait to get inside. And they went inside, and they saw those two boys with their faces pressed against the window. They came back out. They got in the Jeep, and they looked at each other. And then one of them got back out, went back around, and gave those two boys each a small loaf of bread. And as he was walking back to the jeep, one of the little boys followed him. And as he got in the jeep, he pulled on his sleeve, and that soldier looked at that dirty little face of that boy with that fresh loaf of bread, and that boy asked him a question. And he said, sir, are you God? You see, we're never more like God than when we do God things. And one of the greatest ways we can do God things is to have the right focus on the things God gives us. And so, as we think about this, and we're looking at this whole idea, we have some options. Okay, we have some options under this focus. First of all, we can go after the gold. We can be what Matthew writes in verse 32 says, after all these things do the Gentiles seek. Listen, you know people that that's all they do, is they go after the gold. They get out of bed thinking, I need to make money. It's all about the money. It's all about going for the gold. You know, history writers will tell you the difference in North America and South America is that when North America was first settled, people came because of God. They wanted to have freedom to worship like they wanted to and not be ruled. People that went to South America went after the gold. There's a big difference between those two continents, a big difference. And so for us, Going after the gold is what some people do and when that happens It will enslave our heart our minds and our will There's not a person in here who's never has has not seen a TV commercial They spent a lot of time and money in those TV commercials Sometimes you wonder I I just watched the Super Bowl and I think I can't believe that guy spent five million dollars to put that on TV and Certainly certainly he should have had someone look at that before they did it You know and maybe a an audience or somebody say what are you selling? You know because the basic structure is they're trying to first of all capture your attention secondly connect with your emotions and Third they want you to buy something they want something that you have and they want you to give it to them and That is the whole world we live in. And so we have to be challenged in our heart and our minds and our will because it's not the actual possession of money, as Paul writes to Timothy, but he said it's the love of that money that gets us in trouble. So in this focus, we can go after the gold or we can go after God this is the Bible given to me when I was even too young to read two years old by my grandmother my grandmother wanted me to know about God and so before I could even read She gave me this Bible. Now, as a grandparent, now I have 11 grandkids, I want all my grandkids to know about God. I want that next generation that will be here long beyond my time to know about God. And Matthew, here points out very plainly in verse 33 but seek ye first the kingdom of God that's that's the focus you either go after the things that the Gentiles seek or you go after God those are our options and so Paul would talk in Romans about how we should focus on our body and our mind and give that to God the renewing of our mind in Romans 12 God in his word can affect us God in prayer in worship and we surrender those thoughts and we go after God and when that becomes your focus that makes a difference but also in this focus some people say well that's easy if you got a lot of money well we read in this same passage about says in verse 31 therefore take no thought saying what shall we eat or what shall we drink or where will we be clothed okay in other words he tells us you have a choice you can worry about those things and we need to understand a few things the past is the past we can't go back there the future is not here yet so we're it's present so that's where we should spend our time and worrying worrying never takes care of anything. It doesn't get you any closer to the problem. A restaurant that is all over the south, and I don't know how far north they go, but they're famous because outside their restaurants, they have rocking chairs. It's called Cracker Barrel. You got that. Okay. So you know what a rocking chair is? You know, I should try to, Put this microphone up where it can be picked up. You can sit in a rocking chair all day long. And you can put effort. But at the end of the day, you're still in the rocking chair. And that's the way worry is. we need to make sure that when we're focusing on God we we have a not a focus of worry but a focus of worship and That's why seeking God first puts us in that right focus So if you're facing financial issues you worship Because We can see God cares about us. We can see God's concern for us. Your father knows your needs. There's absolutely nothing that God doesn't know. One thing that you'll never hear in heaven is, I never thought that would happen. That's never gonna be said. And so God knows your needs and so when you think about this whole idea of finances, you have to have this idea of the right focus. This right focus matters. It matters. Now, the second thing this morning, let's talk for a minute about your finances. And this is how people treat money. And so, we're gonna go over to Matthew 25 and we're gonna start in verse 14 and we're gonna read a few verses alright for the kingdom of God is a man traveling into a far country who called his own servants and delivered them his goods and unto one he gave five talents to another two and to another one and to every man according to his ability straightly Straightway took his journey then he that had received five talents went and traded with the same and made them another five talents and Likewise he that had received two had also gained two But he that received won, and dug in the earth, and hid his Lord's money. And after a time the Lord of those servants cometh, and reckoned with them. And so God wants us to see a few things here about our finances. Number one is he is the real owner. It says he entrusted his possessions. And tucked away in the book of Deuteronomy, chapter 8 there's this verse it says this to the Jewish people but to us today and thou say in thine heart my power and my might of mine my hand hath gotten me this wealth thou remember the Lord thy God for it is he that giveth the power to get wealth that he may establish his covenant which he swear unto thy fathers as it is to this day he is the real owner and we have to remember that as we're focusing on our finances and that we are responsible Not only is he the real owner, but we're held responsible and that's why in this passage He shows up and says hey How did you do with what I gave you? there is a responsibility that we have and You know They have asked multi millionaires the question What do you need most of them have said I don't need anything but I still want more and this people with all the money in the world and so we have to be careful to understand that that money comes from God but we are responsible what we do with it and so in relationships and in families and things like that we need to have this understanding together And this attitude or impulse or selfishness can get us in trouble. And lastly, not only is God the real owner and we are responsible, but we need to do the right thing. Okay. Sometime in the last year, you've had a birthday. I know that because you're all here and everybody has one a year. Have you ever noticed it's? Happy birthday Okay, happy it's just that It's a it's a short experience Happiness is not something that happens every day You don't get told happy birthday every day Now you can have joy every day But happiness is meant to be short-lived. I There's a lot of people that are trying to find happiness and it's not going to happen every day and it's certainly not going to happen just because you have more money and so we need to understand that and We need to be careful. Sometimes we need to Be careful about our decisions with money because we try to have a What has been called the microwave Decision that happens instantly. I got to have it. I got to have it today By the way, they teach salesmen I have two brothers that were could sell ice to Eskimos and they teach them you got to get them today Don't let them leave without making the purchase You've got to talk about well, what's keeping you? What's the obstacle? What can I do to make this sale? And if there's salesmen in the crowd, you know this and Because they're trying to sell you today. Very rarely, go home, sleep on it a few days and then come back to us. They don't say that. They want it today. And so, you and I need to understand that about our money. So, we've had a focus and we've talked about finances. Let's talk about faith for a minute. Let's talk about your faith in relationship to your funding. So, I, let me see. Hang on. I'm digging through my bag here trying to find what I need. Okay, I found it. Okay, so there were these two dairy farmers in Pennsylvania. They were neighbors, and they kinda kept up with each other, and just like on a day like today, in Pennsylvania, if it's snowing and cold, you still gotta go out to the barn and milk the cows, and you gotta do it early in the morning. So those guys kinda watched each other, watched their kids grow up, and as they got older in life, the one neighbor noticed that the guys next to him, his herd was getting smaller. And he got a little bit concerned, because he didn't know if there were sickness going on, because his cows were in the fields right next to his. And so he went over one morning and said, hey, what's going on? I noticed that you got less cows. Is there something going on? He said, yeah, I'm slowly selling my cows. He said, really? He said, yeah, I'm tired of getting up at 4 o'clock in the morning. And my son and another relative and I are going to start a business. And so he explained to what they were gonna do. And so the other guy went back home, talked to his wife and said, wow, maybe I should think about that. Maybe that's what I need to do. And so he went into town and walked through a couple stores and was trying to get ideas for a business and he found one. So he went back the next day and he met with his neighbor. He said, listen, I really like this idea of what you're going to do. What do you say you and I go in business together? And the guy said, okay, so what do you have to offer? And so he pulled out a little bag and he set it on the table. And the guy said, well, what are we going to do with that? He said, we're going to combine this with what you're going to make and we're going to make money off of it. Guy says, well, I don't know if that's going to work or not. But I tell you what, I'll at least sell you my product we're going to make. And if you want to combine them, you go ahead and, you know, you put your money on it. In fact, you put your name on it. Well, the guy that was, you know, trying to come up with the idea. Secondly, what he had found in the store was a product that was just coming in to sell in stores today at that time. And they would scoop it up and sell it by the pound. And you would take it home. And it was peanut butter. And the other guy had come up with an idea of how to make chocolate. Now, some of you already know what happens when you take this and you put it with this and you have God's gift to humanity right there. Okay? And so, Mr. Reese's, the peanut butter guy, got his name on it. Now, before you feel so bad for the other guy, that was his name, Hershey's. All right? He did okay. did okay so the point is that that was a partnership that made a difference and God wants you to work with him to make a difference with what you have you see he wants it to grow your faith he wants it to be a part of your life and you can do things and so in this whole idea of this very quickly there's just four words I want to put up in just a minute and and they all have to do with this idea of we've already talked about you can save your money you can focus on it you can save it put it away for good things you can spend it or you can share it and I want to give you these four things quickly and because your faith is demonstrated by your generosity and so the first thing that starts generosity is found in Luke Luke's gospel and it's the idea of compassion it's you know the story of the Good Samaritan and in this story it is critical to for us to understand what what's going on here but because in this story and Luke chapter 10 and starting in verse 25 it says and a certain lawyer stood up and tempted him saying master what shall I do to inherit life he said what is written in the law then he says in verse 27 thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all your heart all thy soul and all your strength and all thy mind and your neighbor as yourself and He said unto him thou has answered right this do and thou shalt live and then in verse 29 He says willing to justify himself unto Jesus who's my neighbor and he tells the story of the Good Samaritan and in that story There's three different attitudes. The first attitude is the thieves they say what is yours is mine and they came and took it and Then all the people that passed the guy that was beat up laying on the side of the road what they said What is mine is mine? But it wasn't until the Good Samaritan came along and said what is mine is yours so generosity starts with compassion your faith starts when you care about how things are with other people and not just yourself and so that is critical to understanding it okay so The second word that I want to mention on this whole idea of your faith is contentment. Okay? Contentment. Sometimes you have to be content with eating at McDonald's. That's okay. You don't always have to go to the high-end steak place that gives you these fancy doggie bags. okay you can go here it's okay you can be content okay it's alright but learn contentment and Luke's gospel chapter 12 that starting in verse 13 he Talks about these two guys that we're going to argue over their inheritance and basically He warns them. Hey, don't just get stuff for yourself If you want to learn contentment don't focus on hey, i'm going to get stuff for myself And we need to learn to go after things that will last And ultimately when paul talks in second corinthians About those people that gave out of their poverty. We need to give like we mean it We need to give like we mean it The third word I want to share is the word cultivation and this is how in Matthew 25 How we get prepared to give we've got to cultivate our Life and that has to do with You know being ready to give trusting God to give working at it together and in this whole parable in this story, in Matthew 25, it's talking about the virgins who are not ready when Jesus comes back. We need to cultivate, we need to be ready. I told the group yesterday, hope is a great attitude. It is, but it's a terrible plan. We can't just hope. We gotta be ready, we have to cultivate and be ready. because that ultimately, lastly, shows our character, our contribution that we're gonna make. In Luke 19, this is where we see the investment, and it shows our character, and when in that passage, he says, well done, that good and faithful servant. Our contribution. It's not just about how much money you can put in an envelope. It's not equal gifts, but it's equal sacrifice that makes a difference and so we have to understand in our relationships and in our families and the things that we do that Money does matter Because it can be what divides us or it can be what? Brings us together. And so in this relationship you have with this church It's about being a part of something that's bigger than yourself. It's about making an investment in eternity and the lives that you will touch and change will be changed and forever people in heaven will thank you for your investment in them. World War I was the first big war around the world where they used airplanes. And there was one gentleman who became one of the first aces. If you shot down five airplanes, you considered an ace. This gentleman shot down 26 other airplanes. He received the Medal of Honor. And believe it or not, he at one time was president of the Indianapolis Speedway. because he had been a race car driver before he became a pilot. In World War II, he was used more so in an advisory capacity, but he was on a mission, on a bomber, a B-17 that crashed in the Pacific Ocean. And for 24 days, He and the seven men that survived the crash, three of them died on the impact. He and the other seven men survived in a boat, in a small raft. They caught rain with a few of them had hats, and when it rained they got that as drinking water. But there was something that happened that kept them alive that this guy remembered until the day he died. every Friday about 30 years later after this experience he would go down to the pier where he lived in California and he would feed the seagulls and when he was asked why do you come feed the seagulls and he would tell him the story of those 24 days and now one morning he woke up and he felt something on top of his head and it was a seagull he reached up and grabbed it And it was from that seagull that they used to get bait to catch fish that kept them alive. And Eddie Rickenbacker said he never wanted to forget. He never wanted to not be thankful for how God had provided something so simple, but it saved his life. And for you and me, God has provided. I have been places in the world where they have little or nothing. And here we are today in a nice, warm, well-lit building. All of you probably, I assume, came in a vehicle. We have a lot. And we should be thankful for that. And in that gratitude, we give. And we give thanks to God for what he's done for us. And in your marriage and in your relationships, if you focus on God and not the money, it will make a difference. It will make a difference. God knows your needs and he will provide. But just remember, takes work it takes work it's not easy so don't forget it would you pray with me dear Heavenly Father I thank you for this morning I thank you for each person that was here each person that maybe will listen to this later but Lord you have given us all an opportunity we live in a world that operates in and money and Lord we have to understand how to handle it you have given us we have to understand how to have that compassion and give back give back to others and so Lord as we leave here today help us to take with us an attitude of gratefulness and an attitude of compassion that we would see it as an opportunity, not an obstacle to give, but an opportunity. In Jesus' name, amen.
