Amen. Thank you so much, Melinda. What a wonderful thing to celebrate our Savior's birth. Can you believe that next Sunday is Christmas? It's going to be a new year as well. Time just seems to fly by. Well, if you'll take your Bibles and turn with me to John chapter one, John chapter one. I want to continue our study that we began last Sunday morning on proclaiming the incarnation. Christmas is a wonderful time of year to share the gospel. You have so many visual aids in front of you. And most people have some familiarity with the Christmas story, even though that is fast disappearing from our culture. But there are still many things that you can use to transition into the true message of Christmas. And I would suggest to you that John 1 is an excellent passage to go to, along with the familiar ones that we often use. In John 1, In verse 1, the Bible says, in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness, and the darkness comprehended it not. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the light, that all men through him might believe. He was not that light, but was sent to bear witness of that light. That was the true light which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, To them gave He power or authority to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name, which were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory. the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. Let's pray. Father, help us tonight as we go through this marvelous passage. There is so much in each verse. We pray, Lord, that you would help us to look upon these truths anew, I realize that we have read them so many times through the years, but I pray that you would open our eyes again to the marvel of the incarnation and what you did so that we could be saved. And Father, help us to appreciate it. We'll not ever fully understand it. And I pray, Lord, that we will spread this message to others. and we thank you that we have this time to study in your word. In Jesus' name, amen. There was a chaplain during World War II who ministered to a dying 19-year-old soldier on a battlefield in Italy. The dying man asked him this question, is God really like Jesus? This question is one of the most important that a person will ever ask. In fact, your eternal destiny depends upon the right answer. The chaplain assured the dying man with these words, God is indeed really like Jesus. To see the Lord Jesus is to see the very face of God. That is the center of everything that we believe. The babe in the manger was the Son of God, the ruler of all. We say this and we believe it, but the question is, is it reflected in the way that we live, in our behavior each day, that Jesus really is Lord of all, that he is the Son of God, not just a good man, not just a great teacher, but that he is the sovereign son of God. We must live our lives in light of the incarnation. We saw last week that number one, the word is eternal. Number two, the word is personal. And then number three, the word is divine. These first three points concern the being of our Lord, his divine attributes, divinity itself. But now as we go on to Roman numeral four through seven, we're gonna talk about the actions of deity, what he has done. And only God can do these things. Roman numeral four, the word creates. Jesus is the creator. And we find this in John chapter 1 and verse 3, and it's laid out so simply. All things were made by him, and without him was not anything made that was made. Christ was the Father's agent in every act of making. All that was made was made through him, yet he himself was uncreated. He is eternal. And I want us to consider for a moment what that means about our Savior. There's a story of a child who traveled from the back streets of a great city into the country. When she saw the bluebell flowers there in the woods, she asked, do you think God would mind if I picked some of his flowers? It's simple, but it's very, very good theology. Do you think God would mind if we breathe some of His air or use the bodies that He has given us? How about the energy that He has given us to work and to provide for ourselves? How about the sun and the rain that He has given us? All of these things belong to him. And Jesus is the one who created them. And the Bible says that he's not only the creator, but he is also the sustainer. Without him, we would have nothing. We sang that song, how low was our redeemer brought? The creator of all things came to redeem his fallen creation. And friends, we have to understand who Jesus really is if we're going to live for him. We have to let these truths sink down into our hearts. Jesus is the creator of all things. Number four, the word gives life. The word gives life. In him was life, the Bible says in chapter one and verse four. William Barclay points out that in the gospel of John, the word life is a key word. It's one of those key words that appears in this prologue, words like life and light. And then they appear throughout the rest of the gospel. In fact, the Greek word for life occurs more than 35 times. And the verb to live or to have life more than 15 times. And oftentimes you will see the Lord Jesus himself refer to life. In John 5 and verse 40, Jesus says this about the religious leaders in chapter 5 and verse 18. He says, and ye will not come to me that ye might have what? Life. That is the only way that a person can have eternal life, is by coming to the Lord Jesus Christ. But sadly enough, there were some who rejected him and refused to come. I want you to turn to this passage. What a great verse this is. John chapter 10 and verse 10. John chapter 10 and verse 10. Jesus says here in this passage, John 10 and verse 10, I am come that they might have what? Life. But then he goes on beyond that. And that they might have it more abundantly. The abundant life. What does Christ mean? And what does eternal life mean? He was not talking about mere existence. Everyone in this world, in fact, everyone, every human being who has ever been born is going to live forever somewhere. There are only two places that you can go after this life. There is heaven and there is hell. And the Bible teaches that there is eternal existence in each one. There are some false teachers and others And even some who claim to be evangelicals who say that when a person goes to hell, he's going to just burn up or he's going to cease to exist. That's called annihilationism. The Jehovah's Witnesses teach that, but there are many other groups as well. But that's not what the Bible says. The Bible says the smoke of their torment ascendeth up forever and forever. They will live in this place of suffering and agony, and more than anything else, separation from God for all eternity. They will have eternal existence, but that's not really eternal life. That's what we're talking about here. That's what Jesus offers. It is more than mere existence. He is speaking of quality of life, not just quantity. And eternal life begins when you trusted Jesus Christ as your personal Savior. At that moment, you had eternal life. Yes, as a soul, you had eternal existence, but this is more. If you would turn please to John chapter 17 and verse three, and Jesus lays this out so clear in his high priestly prayer. John 17 and verse three. Jesus says in John 17 three, and this is life eternal. This is what it means, that they might know thee the only true God. in Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent." The focus of eternal life in the Bible is not just on our future, although it does include that, but it also is on our current standing in Christ at this moment. If you know Jesus Christ as Savior, you have eternal life now in the present. We have eternal life because we know the Father through Christ. And my friend, that is the very definition of eternal life. Let me ask you, do you have abundant life? Are you enjoying that fellowship with God? I hope so. I hope it's not a drudgery to come to church. I hope it's not a drudgery to have your devotions. I hope it's not a drudgery to pray. Because if it is, and if you're a true child of God, we're missing out on the abundant life. Yes, these things are disciplines. They are things that we have to tell ourselves to do. We have to say no to ourselves. But at the same time, my friends, there ought to be a joy that comes with serving God, a joy that comes with eternal life, the abundant life. And I hope that describes you today. The focus of eternal life is on our current standing in Christ. Christ gives eternal life. Aren't you glad? Number six, the word reveals, chapter one and verse four, this life was the light of men. Again, in John 17, in that great high priestly prayer, if you want to turn there, John 17 and verse 25, Jesus addresses the father as his disciples were all around him. And he says, O righteous father, the world hath not known thee. What a tragedy that is. to not know God. And it's not saying that they don't know about God because there is something that God has put within all of us to know about God, that he's the creator, that he's all powerful, but they don't know him personally. They don't have a relationship with him. And they don't hear his voice when he calls. Jesus said, my sheep hear my voice. There's a reason why when you go to your loved one's house, if they're unsaved over this season, there's a reason why they reject because they don't know the voice of the shepherd. That's why we have to pray that they will accept him before it's too late. But Jesus said, if you're one of mine, you're going to hear my voice. You're going to know the truth. It's not just intellectual apprehension. It's more than that. You have to hear with the heart. And only God can penetrate to the heart with the conviction of his Holy Spirit. Jesus says, the world hath not known thee. That makes a great divide. And Jesus is the one who is saying this. Not everyone is a child of God. We can only become children of God, the Bible says in John 1, because he has given us that power and authority, the Son, the Son of God. He goes on to say this, though, but I have known thee. There's a picture of John F. Kennedy, a very, very famous picture, and he is there working at his desk. Very, very famous desk, an oak desk. I believe it was made out of the resolute. And there playing around that desk was his son, John John, as they called him at the time. There this little boy was in the, what you would call the inner sanctum of the US presidency. There he was playing around the most powerful man in the world. I heard a statistic that it takes close to $3,000 a minute to protect the president wherever he goes. $3,000 every minute. And that's just the motorcade. That's not including Air Force One or Marine One. He has constant security around him. But then here you have this little child and he's playing in the inner sanctum. He has access. to the most powerful man on earth. Well, my friends, Jesus as the Son of God has access to the Father. There is no way that we can come to God on our own. We are sinners. He is thrice holy, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in one God. There's no way that we could ever come into His presence in and of ourselves, but Jesus has known him. He is the gateway to the Father. And then he says in verse 26, and I have declared unto them thy name. And that's an important statement. You may want to underline that, thy name. In Exodus 3 and verse 14, do you remember when God gave to Moses his name? God said in Exodus 3, 14, He said unto Moses, I am that I am. And that's the name Jehovah, or Yahweh. And he said, thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I am, Jehovah hath sent me unto you. What's remarkable is that when you go back to verse 26, you find this same language used when Jesus says, I have declared unto them thy name, your person, your character, in a way that no one else can. And that's exactly what John 1 18 tells us. No man had seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father. There it is, that relationship. He was with God in the beginning. The only begotten Son, He hath declared Him. Do you see why it's so important for us to glorify and exalt the Lord Jesus Christ? We have to spread this message to others that Christianity is not just about living a good life and doing good deeds. Jesus did not just show us a way of living. He is the way, and he is the only way. And if you don't accept him, there is no hope whatsoever of coming to God. There is no access to the Father. Well, everything you wanna know about God can be found by gazing upon the face of the Lord Jesus Christ. Let's review. Number one, the word is eternal. Number two, he is personal. Number three, he is divine. He's the son of God. Number four, he creates. Number five, he gives life. Number six, he reveals. And then number seven, and this is the culmination of everything else, the word became flesh. The word became man, chapter one and verse 14. C.S. Lewis put this doctrine in this perspective. He said, the central miracle asserted by Christians is the incarnation. Every other miracle prepares the way for this or results from it. If you can believe the incarnation, you shouldn't have trouble accepting anything else about Jesus. And that includes his virgin birth. That includes his resurrection. The fact that God became man without divesting himself of being God, Fully God and fully man. Let me ask you this. Do you understand that? How a being can be all one and then all another? If you do, talk to me. I want to get with you after the service. I don't understand it. It is a great mystery. I don't think we'll ever really comprehend it, frankly, because even in eternity, we'll be finite beings. But that is exactly what happened. God took upon himself humanity. Ray Pritchard says this, this is the central tenet of our faith that God became a man. And it is at this point that we part company with Islam and Judaism. Both of those religions categorically reject the notion that God has a son. and that God could somehow become one of us. And if you utter that to someone who is a devout Muslim, to someone who is in Judaism, you are a deceiver and a heretic of the highest order. But that's exactly what the Bible teaches. To Christians, it is impossible to speak about God without speaking about Jesus, because God became a man 2,000 years ago. Let me stress this point. You can talk about God all day, and you're probably not going to offend very many people. Well, maybe some. The atheists and the agnostics, you know, the people called nuns, Not nuns who wear black, but nuns, N-O-N-E-S. Yes, you'll offend a very, very small group of people, but otherwise you're not going to. But mention the name Jesus Christ in a crowd and notice what happens. A crowd of your friends at work or among family. He is the great dividing line. And I know this is not popular, but Jesus himself said, I came to this earth the first time not to bring peace, but a sword. Now friends, you can find that in history. That is a fact. There is a great dividing line because he forces us to choose. He calls himself the Son of God, and that's how we have to accept him. He can't just be a good man or a good teacher. We must accept him for who he is. He is God in the flesh. As Lewis says, every other miracle leads to the incarnation or results from it. Everything can be traced back to that. There was an article called, Who is the Most Important Person in History? To help answer this question, a computer scientist and a Google engineer developed a system that ranks historical figures in order of significance. They assessed more than 800,000 names and then factored in how long and how long ago someone lived. For instance, They compared the influence of Aristotle, the great Greek philosopher, to modern pop singer, Britney Spears. Though more people know about Britney Spears, a frightening thought, but anyway, her influence is not likely to endure 100 years from now. But Aristotle was a man for the ages. And so, Here are the top 10 most influential people in history. Who do you think number one is? Jesus Christ. Interesting, isn't it? Number two, Napoleon. Number three, Muhammad. Number four, William Shakespeare. Number five, Abraham Lincoln. Number six, George Washington. Number seven, Adolf Hitler. Number eight, Aristotle. Number nine, Alexander the Great. Number 10, Thomas Jefferson. There are some other notable names on that list. At number 17 is the German reformer, Martin Luther. Number 18, Joseph Stalin. And yes, coming in at number 68 is Elvis Presley. Right in between Socrates and William the Conqueror. Pretty good company, right? At 128, the Virgin Mary. Well, I'm not going to go through all 800 and whatever there is, 800,000 and so, but at 8,633 is Justin Bieber. How does he compare with Jesus? The author answers the question this way. The significance of Jesus is shown by his influence today, fully 2,000 years after his death, unprecedented. We don't see the same happening for Justin Bieber. People recognize Jesus as a great man, and that is an undeniable fact. His influence is found everywhere. But friends, that is not enough. He's the son of God. And that's what Christmas is all about. If he did not come to this earth, we would have no hope. Let us take this message of hope to others during this season and let us live in light of his incarnation. Let's pray. Father, we thank you so much for our Lord Jesus Christ, for what he did for us, and truly how low our Redeemer was brought, how he humbled himself, became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
