In Mark chapter 5 verse 41, he took the damsel by the hand and said unto her, to Letha Kumi, which is being interpreted, damsel, I say unto thee, arise and straightway the damsel arose and walked. Jesus and his disciples had come to the city of Capernaum and they had been welcomed warmly by the people of that city, and they gathered around him in a great crowd, and as they were gathered there, this man comes. He's a leader in the synagogue, and his name is Jairus, and he's a very anxious father. His only child is ill and near to death, and he comes to the master. and pleased that the Lord Jesus might come and touch her and heal her. The Lord Jesus immediately just dropped what he was doing and left with the man and returned to his home. Now, on the way, I didn't read this part of it, is interrupted by a very ill woman who has been sick for more than 12 years. And she has an issue of blood and she's very weak and very faint. And she comes to him and touches the hem of his garment and is healed. And he says to the disciples, who touched me? And they said, by Lord, there's people all around you. He said, no, somebody touched me. The Lord knows. He's aware of that. After this woman is healed, he goes on to Jairus' house, and as he gets there, there's a huge crowd. A servant has come as they're walking and said, don't bother Jesus anymore. Your daughter is dead. And just leave the master alone. But they continue on and come to the house. and we see the miracle that we'll talk about tonight when they arrive there. I wanna bring you a message tonight, the Lord help me, that I've entitled, Jairus's Daughter Healed. There are about five or six things I want us to see about the situation from this two verses. First of all, I wanna talk about Jairus. He's a man who has one child. And he's very, very distressed. He was a leader in the synagogue there in the city of Capernaum. And he appears to be very familiar with the Lord Jesus and familiar with what he taught and familiar with his power and capacity. And his tribute was he came to him and he was honorable in the way he spoke to him. He didn't command him, he didn't order him, he just begged him, please come help my daughter. This desperate man was very intense. Most of us who have children, even if we don't like them, get desperate about them at certain times. And my wife used to say to me, you need to be kinder to our children. I said, they need to be kinder to me. She said, no. She said, I know you. I know how you feel when they're sick or anything like that. And she's right. But this man fell down at Jesus feet and began to worship him. I'll tell you something. The Lord of glory is worthy of worship. Whatever's going on in your life. You may be dying. Your children may be dying. Your best friend may be dying. But the Lord of Glory is always worthy of worship. He recognized Jesus as the greatest miracle worker they'd ever seen. The Lord of Glory said things and did things that nobody had ever seen before. The authority of the people in the synagogue could not help this man. He'd been a worker in the synagogue. A synagogue, by the way, Any Jewish city that had 10 Hebrew families would have a synagogue, at least one synagogue. And the synagogue was a place where people went and they read the scriptures, and they discussed what was in the scriptures, and they would have prayer. And it was kind of like our church services a little bit. And Jairus had something to do with this. He was an official in that synagogue. Nobody in the synagogue could help him. Whoever read the scriptures couldn't help him. Whoever prayed couldn't help him. He expressed, however, unhesitating faith in the Lord's ability. I tell you that God Almighty may not do what you want. He may not. Whatever the situation is, But we must never lose sight of the fact that he can. All these people that think that God's going to heal everybody need to ask themselves, why are they sick? God doesn't aim to heal everybody. He didn't do it in Jesus' day, and he's not doing it now. But he can. He can. Jairus felt a great need for Jesus to come to his house. Remember a few weeks back, we talked about the centurion who said, you don't need to come to my house. Just say my servants well and he'll be well. But this man felt like that he needed the Lord's presence in his house. He felt like if Christ came to his house, that it would enhance the miracle, that the dollar would be raised up. And when he looked at his daughter and he saw her, it moved him to beg Christ to come to his house. Now we're not told if Jairus was a disciple. In the gospels, it's uncertain. There are many people who believed him. There were others who believed on him. And there were others that didn't believe anything. They just wanted to see the miracles. They wanted to hear him speak. But the Lord Jesus is definitely the healer of bodies and souls. If you get over a common cold, the Lord Jesus does it. You can go to the best doctors you want to, and they can't help you if the Lord of glory doesn't. I was talking to a lady today, and her dad's been real sick, and she said, we don't really know. He went to the doctor and the doctor said, not sure what's wrong with him. He said, we don't know what's wrong. He just, he just, he prayed about it. And just in the last couple of days, he's got a lot better. I said, well, sounds to me like you're talking to the right person. This little girl's father doesn't talk about himself. He presents his sick daughter and her needs to the Lord Jesus. Mark calls her his little daughter. Luke tells us she was an only child in Luke 8.42, for he had one only daughter about 12 years of age, and she lay dying. Only child. I think back when my grandparents and great-grandparents were alive, people had big families. You know, everybody had eight or ten or twelve brothers and sisters, and we have a few people in our church here that are from big families, and it was a common thing in those days. People lost children from diseases and other things and accidents. But this young girl is, this man Jairus' only child. Makes him special. Always like these commercials that talk about how you treat the first baby and then when the second one comes along, you handle them differently. I remember David was an only child for 13 years. He got handled like he was the king of Australia or something like that. His brother came along, we've got all about him. He just got along by himself. The scripture tells us that this little girl was 12 years old. And I think that's significant because remember that the woman that Jesus healed on the way to Jairus' house had been sick for 12 years. She'd been sick longer than this little girl was alive. And the same Lord who healed her is now called upon to heal this little girl. We're not told what was wrong with her. Everybody always wants to know details. It amazes me in reading the Gospels that a lot of times God doesn't give us any details. He just said she was dying. And if you're dying, it doesn't mean here's what you're dying from. You're still dying. Every one of the Gospel writers, every one of the stories that read Matthew, Mark, and Luke, they're all different. They've got the same essential elements and the same essential story, but they have a different perspective of it because each one of those men was an independent witness of this great event. And if you know anything about crime and criminal cases and lawyers and stuff like that, witnesses are the most unreliable witnesses. Ask three people, it's all the same thing. And they'll all have three different stories, you know. Car hits a deer. Deer goes through the interior of the car, kills somebody. You ask one person what happened, they said, don't know, this deer was flying along, ran into the car. Ask the next person what happened, said, don't know, that lady in that car just jumped right through the windshield to get that deer. And somebody else will tell you the car hit the deer and it went through the windshield. They all got different stories. Their discrepancies are all part of this great harmony that the scriptures are. I read this book every day. I read two, five chapters of the Bible every day, three devotionals, plus whatever I'm studying that day. And I am constantly reminded of this book's in perfect harmony with itself. God wrote exactly what he wanted written. He inspired men to write it. When Jairus went to get Jesus, this little girl was nearly dead. It tells us that in verse 39. Why make you this ado and weep? The damsel is not dead, but sleepeth. They thought she was dead. They thought she was dying. Jesus said she's asleep. Matthew, in fact, if you read Matthew's account of this story, he assumed that she had died and he wrote from that perspective. But as Jesus traveled, this servant came and said, leave the master alone, it's too late. The girl's dead. But Jesus ignored what the servant said. and went on to the house. Now let's take a look at the divine encourager. This man's desperate cry brought the manifestation of his power. I'm a tough old buzzard, but sometimes People touch me and I get moved. And nothing moves me as much as to see somebody who's in a desperate situation. It just disturbs me. I weep. This man was in a dire strait. His unfailing readiness to be helped was God's instrument. And the Lord Jesus, he threw everybody else out of the house. The Lord of glory is not gonna parade his powers before curious people. All these mourners and weepers were all in the house. And I remember back when I was a young boy, people would die. And they would have the bodies in their homes. And people would come from all around. There'd be people all over. The men would be out back drinking and smoking, and the women would be inside crying and sobbing and carrying on and telling stories. And I remember as a little boy, I thought, this is a strange occurrence, people are. But Lord Jesus threw all these people out. He said, get out. Go away. And he took the father and the mother, and Peter, James, and John, and went into the room where she was. And he calmed them with these words, as soon, as soon. How comforting. To know that the Lord of our salvation says to you, says to me, as soon. Nothing hinders him. Nothing holds his hands as soon. He preoccupied the Father with this message of hope. He said, she's not dead, she's asleep. She's asleep. You wonder what he felt in his heart. Maybe she's really just asleep. Maybe she'll wake up. His appreciation of this hour of trial is revealed in the message that he brings. Look at verse 36. As soon as Jesus heard the words that were spoken, he said unto the ruler of the synagogue, be not afraid, only believe. Be not afraid, only believe. In your life and in my life, things are going to happen that we don't expect. Things are going to happen we don't know how to deal with. Things are going to happen that we don't know how to respond to. And the Lord of Glory is going to say to you, as he said to this man, just calm down. It'll be okay. Jesus knew about this girl even before This servant came bearing bad news. He came to this home and encountered this crowd of professional mourners who were gathered all around weeping and mourning with the family. They filled the house with a message of death. She's dead. Leave the Master alone. And his good news angered this crowd of ignorant mourners. Look at verse 40, they laughed him to scorn. But when he had put them all out, he taken the father and the mother of the damsel and them that were with him and entered in where the damsel was lying. They scorned him. They mocked him. Didn't stop him for a minute. Jesus knew about her. His good news warmed their hearts. He speaks of death as nothing but sleep. The Lord Jesus covered the blackness of death with the power of light. Now there's not a person in here tonight, not a one of you, who hasn't dealt with death. Might be a brother, sister, husband, wife, aunt or uncle, mother, father. And I'll tell you, if you have nothing but this flesh, that's a horrible thing. It's a horrible thing. It's frightening. It's terrifying. You have no answer for it. But the Lord of glory comes in the hour of death, and he turns the lights on. He turns the lights on. There's an everlasting morning that will bring life to every true believer. I quote that eulogy at almost every funeral I preach. Here lies George Pease. If Pease is not here, it's just his pod. Because Pease has shelled out and gone to God. That's what you're going to do someday. That's what I'm going to do someday. I tell people all the time, y'all do whatever y'all want to. But don't talk about me being dead. I won't be dead. The old house I lived in will be. Do whatever you want to with it. Put it in a box, throw it in the ground. Pick me out and feed me the fishes. I don't care what you do with it. Because I'm gonna be with the king. I'll be celebrating, rejoicing with the Lord Jesus Christ. I think about that every time I preach a funeral. No matter how big it is or how small it is, I think these people are all in here sad and burdened and broken. And the one that we've come to mourn over is celebrating with the Lord Jesus. Sleep for the body of the dead is never for the soul. Your soul doesn't die. It just moves out the door. Death is a doorway between eternal death and eternal life. When you were born in this world, you were destined to die. When we think about death, we think about old people. We think about people that are injured. We think about people that are sick. We think about people that are in desperate conditions. I'm telling you that when you hold a newborn baby in your hands, It's destined to die. It's appointed to die. And when the breath goes out of this body that we live in, we're appointed to live. That's good news, folks. Good news. Now, in this last part of verse 40, These people mocked him, scorned him. But the Lord of Glory refuses to cast his pearls before swine. He cast out these unimportant mourners and visitors. The house is now quiet. A few minutes ago, it was full of people, weeping, moaning and wailing. That's quiet. Mom, Dad, Jesus, three disciples. Nobody's saying a word. Quiet as it can be. These noisy people had seen his works, but they didn't believe. And now it's come time. And they hastened as a great crowd and made a lot of noise. But they rejected spiritual life and the Lord declared himself to be the master of the house. We took the parents and three disciples into this bedchamber. The great work that was to be done here was to be done in an atmosphere of faith. The Lord of Glory speaks to the child. She gets up. Powerful words. The lethal Kumi. Arise. And straightway the damsel arose, walked. She got up, walked. Old things pass away. and the soul begins to live. Luke 8.55 tells us her spirit came again and she arose straight away. Her spirit returned from the unseen world and rejoined her body. Nobody but Christ can raise the dead and restore them to life. Nobody. The Lord Jesus knew not only the when of His miracles. He knew when it was going to be a miracle. The disciples were surprised when He said to them when that woman touched the hem of His garment, who touched me? They said, Lord, there's all kinds of people around you. They're all touching you. He said, no, somebody touched me. Somebody touched me. He knows the why. He knows what their need is. Most of the time Jesus would ask people, what do you want? What do you want? I want to see. I want to walk. I want to hear. I want to live. But he also knew the how. He knew the how. I was talking to a lady today who has had cancer. for several years off and on. She was telling me about some of the stuff doctors had done to her and put her through in her battle against cancer. And I said, how did you feel about that? And she said, well, it's just the uncertainty. You don't know what they're going to do next. You don't know if it's going to work. You know, you want to get well. You're desperate. You'll try anything. But you don't know how they're going to do that. I want you to know that every spiritual resurrection is a divine work. Every one of them. Its source and its power is all in the hand of God. This girl's death is erased not by anything else, but by his power and his presence. He commands her parents to feed the child. She's awake, feed her. That's what children do best. There's a little girl that comes over to Wynette's with her mother in the morning. She won't eat anything but macaroni and cheese. Seven o'clock in the morning, she's eating macaroni and cheese. Cute little girl. That's what children do. The Lord was mindful of her needs. He's mindful of your needs, whatever they may be. Body may be weakened, but God gives a new spirit. And that spirit needs to be strengthened. She needed to eat to verify the reality of the miracle. She's really alive, she needs to eat. But her parents forgot that that was essential. And he said, feed her. And our Lord commands them to be silent about it. I have to tell you this, as a man, as a mortal, I'm always amazed when the Lord of Glory does a miracle and says, now be quiet about this. I'll tell you what, if the Lord does a miracle to me, I can't be quiet about it. I keep telling everybody what he's done to me. Her parents, Luke says, were astonished. But he charged them that they should tell no man what was done. Don't you tell anybody what happened. He charges these parents to remain silent about this healing. Our Lord was not worried about himself. He knew that publicity wouldn't be good for the little girl. People would bother her. They would come. People came from miles to see Lazarus when Jesus raised him. The little girl doesn't need that kind of attention. He did not want her to be harassed by curiosity seekers. And they would have come from everywhere. They did then, they still do. This miracle reminds us there's a resurrection coming of eternal glory. And the King of Kings holds dominion over all we have and all we are. Only Christ has the right to speak. this imperial command. Arise. I love to hear his voice. Arise. The day is not far distant when all of the dead in Christ will respond in obedience to his holy voice. You notice when he called Lazarus from the grave, he called him by name. Why did he do that? Why did he call Lazarus to come forth? If he hadn't called Lazarus, they'd all come forth. He has the ability to do that. The Lord of Glory resurrected three people from the dead while he was alive. Jairus' daughter here, the son of the widow of Nain that we talked about, and Lazarus. Three people. All of them were different. All of them were unique. Yet he called them. He raised all of them to life that proved that life is through his name. I am the way, the truth, and the life. No man cometh unto the Father but by me. Those three deceased were chosen for a specific purpose. Jairus' daughter was raised with ease and graciousness. Arise! Arise! The widow's son was raised when Jesus walked in the middle of the funeral procession and touched the beer, the platform on which they carried his body. He just reached and touched him. And he sat up. He said, boy, go home and take care of your mama. In Lazarus' case, Jesus cried out with a loud voice there in the cemetery, Lazarus, come forth. Here he came out of the grave. I think it's worth spending just a minute to talk about this, that children die because they're born in sin and they need a savior. We start sinning before we're born. The age of responsibility is very hard to determine in life. Everybody's got an idea how old a child is when they become the age of responsibility. Well, I think it's when they're 12. I think it's when they're 10. I think it's when they're six. I think it's when they're 20. There is no certain age of responsibility. Age of responsibility comes when God makes you aware of your sinfulness. The very youngest needs to be quickened unto new life. I have a friend. He's one of the most holy men I know. And he'll tell you, God saved him when he was six years old. He had polio. Wore braces up to his waist, walked on crutches. He tickled me to death. He was so strong, he got where he could flip over on his hands and walk on his hands. He could go up and down steps on his hands like a monkey on a pole. I used to kid him all the time about that. He said, when God took my legs away, he gave me arms. I baptized a man one time who was 93 years old. God just gave him life. Young people are not hardened by worldliness and indifference. They're hardened by their sin. They have lain for long under the shackles of sin. And the tempter, Satan, is always instilling his poison in their souls. I don't know how you feel about this, and it really doesn't make any difference to me. But I've been listening for the last few days about young people all over this country who are wanting to kick our president out of office and shoot all the NRA members and everything else. Listen to me. The NRA did not shoot those high school students and Donald Trump did not shoot the high school students. And young people are confused because they've been taught wrong. And the only hope they have is that God will somehow teach them right, that he'll give them some wisdom. But sinners need to hear the quiet and gentle voice of Jesus. They need to hear him say, as this young woman heard, arise, arise. Many youngsters have strayed from God. I hope you're aware of that. I'm so conscious of it. How many young people in our world today don't know God? Everything in their environment, everything in their world teaches them to not believe the Scriptures and not believe God, not believe the truth. They must be called to remember their Creator. If he doesn't call them, they'll never come. Lazarus represents those that are hardened in sin. He'd been in a grave four days. He said, roll the stone away. They said, well, master, we don't want to do that. He's been in there four days, he stinks. They bear in their lives the sad traces of the presence of sin. Yesterday or no, it was two, three days ago. I was sitting in my kitchen cooking and I looked and I saw somebody coming through the yard. And I thought, I wonder who that is. And they came up the sidewalk and they went back here where this back door is in the dining room. It was pouring out raining and they sat down back there. And I said, I don't know, I may be keeping an eye on this. And I watched that person, they sat there for quite a while, and I decided I'm going to go over there and say something to them. And about that time they got up, and it was a girl. It wasn't a boy, it was a girl. I thought it was a boy. They came through my gate, came through my yard, went out the gate on the other side, and went up the hill. I don't know where they were going. And I thought, that young person's got to be confused. But despite years of shame and sinfulness, the Lord still speaks to Lazarus and says, come forth. He speaks to people today and says, come forth. He is able and willing to terminate this empire of sin and to offer himself as a fountain of life. Look at the first 43. He charged him straightly that no man should know it and commanded that something should be given her to eat. Corrupted flesh when touched by the spirit of God must respond. Natural flesh is dead to understanding the things of God. They do not understand the things of God, they never will understand the things of God. If God doesn't do something to touch them and give them life, they never will understand. It's like talking to my dog. I talk to him like he understands me, but I know good and well he doesn't understand a word I say. Corrupt flesh can weep one minute at the tragedies of life and then mock the Son of God in the same instant. The world laughs when we declare that all are guilty of sin. But they are. Ephesians 2 says, "...you hath he quickened who were dead in trespasses and sins." I was there once. I was there. And apart from the power of Christ, all sinners are hopeless and helpless. There's not a thing you can do. Not a thing. He took the damsel by the hand and said unto her, to Letha Kumi, which is being interpreted damsel, I say unto thee, And straightway the damsel arose and walked. The father of this dying child was nearly overwhelmed with grief. He comes to Jesus desperately and begs for mercy. The Lord of glory has no interest in entertaining wicked hearts. But our Lord is all wise in advising both testimony and silence to those who have hurt him. We live in a world that has forgotten that our children need a savior. Let's remember that. And straightway the damsel arose and walked. That's good news. That's good news. Amen.
Jairus' Daughter Is Healed
Serie Biblical Miracles
Jesus and His disciples received a warm welcome as they returned to Capernaum but as they gathered around the Master an anxious father bowed before Him and made a plea for his daughter to be healed. Jesus immediately left with the man to return to his home. On the way He is interrupted by a very ill woman who is in desperate straits; after healing her He continues to Jairus' home where we see the resurrection miracle we consider this evening.
