You're listening to Soul Food a la Carte, issue 8. One of the chief markers of whether you are wise or a fool is where you find your pleasure. That according to Proverbs 10, 23. A fool finds pleasure in evil conduct, but a man of understanding delights in wisdom. It's not just a matter of whether you do evil things or good things, it's a matter of where you find your pleasure. Sermon on Psalm 4, verses 4 and 5 on repentance. A couple of highlights from the sermon. The phrase, search your hearts and be silent. That's in that verse that talks about being still and know that I am God. The rest of it says, search your hearts and be silent. Literally means, speak to yourself and be silent. speak to yourself and be silent. True repentance comes when the part of you that understands and loves the Word of God does the talking, and the part of you that wants to justify itself shuts up and listens. Another one, there comes a time when a child is no longer satisfied with pretend keys, phones, cars, babies, or guns. They grow out of fantasy and want to enter reality. They want to be involved in serious things that really matter. That hunger keeps growing, and it's never really satisfied until you become involved in eternal things. And then one more, if God is our refuge, why are we told to fear Him? Why fear a refuge? Is God safe or dangerous? He's safe when you're running to Him, and He's dangerous when you're running away from Him. I want to let you know about a new feature that I'm adding. It's a Q&A where I'm recording answers to Bible questions that people have given me. And episode one is ready. It's up on the website. You can click on the link and listen. Some of the questions that I answer in this episode, is it wise to tithe when you know that giving God a tithe will mean that you can't pay your bills or meet your obligations? Another one, why does God command so much killing in the Old Testament, and how does that fit with the commandment, thou shalt not murder? Third one, what is the purpose of designating unclean animals in the Old Testament? This episode will address those questions and more. And if you have any questions you'd like answered in future episodes, then please put those in the comments below, or email them to me, let me know, and I'll get you the answer. 1 John 2.16 Everything in the world, the desire of the flesh, the desire of the eyes, and the boasting of life, comes not from the Father, but from the world. Interesting verse. John only seems to recognize two possible sources of our desires, the world or God. All your desires come from one of those two sources. Each time you have a desire, that desire exists because of something God said that you believed, or because of something the world said that you believed. If you'd like to study more about that, check out the sermon on 1 John 2.16 on treasuringgod.com. I've been listening through the sermons on the book of Ephesians, and the one that impacted me the most so far is the one on chapter 1, verses 5 and 6, the glory of His grace. What are the implications of the doctrine of election? That doctrine, election, predestination, those doctrines usually cause a lot of fighting and arguing and anxiety in people. They think about it and think, why would one person be chosen and not another person? They cause anxiety. Those doctrines are designed to encourage us. And if you study through scripture, you'll find every time those doctrines appear, they're for that purpose, they're for encouragement. In this sermon, there are 10 practical and encouraging applications for the doctrine of election. And there's also some comments about adoption in this message. In New Testament times, if you wanted more children, you just purchased them, you didn't adopt them. And there's only one reason why they would go through the very expensive and difficult process of adoption. And that reason is the point that Paul's making when he says that God adopted us. And it's a very, very encouraging thing. So go ahead and click on the link to listen to that one. Psalm 47, you have filled my heart with greater joy than when their grain and new wine abound. nearness to God will make you happier than the people in the world would be if they got everything they desired.
