Numbers chapter 29, and we'll continue reading through this chapter as we pick up at verse 12 and read through the end of the chapter. As I mentioned last Lord's Day, here in chapter 29, we have the offerings made by fire, or the burnt offerings that were to be performed on the seventh month, first in the Feast of Trumpets on the first day of the month in verses 1-6, then on the Day of Atonement, the tenth day of the month, in verses 7-11. And remember that I mentioned both in verse 7 and 12, we have the holy convocations referred to. The people of God were to meet in public worship and make these offerings by fire or burnt offerings. And remember as we read this as well, that the term meat offering We could use the word meal instead of meat to understand that the meat offering consisted of bread and wine. So, it was a picture of communion with God. Now, we'll pick up at verse 12 and read of the burnt offerings offered in the Feast of Tabernacles, the fifteenth day and the seven days that followed. Let us hear God's Word. And on the fifteenth day of the seventh month ye shall have an holy convocation, ye shall do no servile work, and ye shall keep a feast unto the Lord seven days. And ye shall offer a burnt offering, a sacrifice made by fire of a sweet savour unto the Lord, thirteen young bullocks, two rams, and fourteen lambs of the first year. They shall be without blemish. And their meat offering shall be of a flower mingled with oil, three-tenth deals unto every bullock of the thirteen bullocks, two-tenth deals to each ram of the two rams, and a several-tenth deal to each lamb of the fourteen lambs, and one kid of the goats for a sin offering beside the continual burnt offering, his meat offering, and his drink offering. And on the second day ye shall offer twelve young bullocks, two rams, fourteen lambs of the first year without spot. and their meat-offering and their drink-offerings for the bullocks, for the rams, and for the lambs shall be according to their number, after the manner. And one kid of the goats for a sin-offering, beside the continual burnt-offering, and the meat-offering thereof, and their drink-offerings. And on the third day eleven bullocks, two rams, fourteen lambs of the first year without blemish, and their meat-offering and their drink-offerings for the bullocks, for the rams, and for the lambs shall be according to their number, after the manor, and one goat for a sin offering beside the continual burnt offering, and his meat offering, and his drink offering. And on the fourth day, ten bullocks, two rams, and fourteen lambs of the first year without blemish, their meat offering and their drink offerings for the bullocks, for the rams and for the lambs shall be according to their number after the manor. And one kid of the goats for a sin offering beside the continual burnt offering, his meat and his drink-offering, and on the fifth day nine bullocks, two rams, and fourteen lambs of the first year without spot, and their meat-offering and their drink-offerings for the bullocks, for the rams, and for the lambs shall be according to their number after the manor. And one goat for a sin-offering beside the continual burnt-offering, and his meat-offering and his drink-offering. On the sixth day, eight bullocks, two rams and fourteen lambs of the first year without blemish, and their meat offering and their drink offerings for the bullocks, for the rams and for the lambs shall be according to their number after the manor, and one goat for a sin offering, beside the continual burnt offering, his meat offering and his drink offering. And on the seventh day, seven bullocks, two rams, and fourteen lambs of the first year without blemish, and their meat offering and their drink offerings for the bullocks, for the rams, and for the lambs shall be according to their number after the manor, and one goat for a sin offering, beside the continual burnt offering, his meat offering, and his drink offering. On the eighth day ye shall have a solemn assembly. He shall do no servile work therein, but he shall offer a burnt offering, a sacrifice made by fire of a sweet savour unto the Lord, one bullock, one ram, seven lambs of the first year without blemish. Their meat offering and their drink offerings for the bullock, for the ram and for the lamb shall be according to their number after the manner, and one goat for a sin offering beside the continual burnt offering, and his meat offering, and his drink offering." These things ye shall do unto the Lord in your set feast, besides your vows, and your freewill offerings, for your burnt offerings, and for your meat offerings, and for your drink offerings, and for your peace offerings. And Moses told the children of Israel, according to all that the Lord commanded Moses." Thus ends the reading of God's holy and infallible Word. Just a few observations on this text. notice that their days of rejoicing were to be carried out with sacrifices. They were to rejoice in their tents, in their tabernacles, and yet there were to be sacrifices. Their joy didn't preclude them from worshiping God the way He had demanded and commanded them to do. Also, all those days they were to be in their booths. And that's important for us to remember. There was a joy in the simplicity that reminded them that they had been brought into the land of promise and that God had delivered them. Also, there's no vain repetition of the sacrifices on each day. Now, some of you might have been tempted to think that as we continue to read through The sacrifices on each day. Did you notice, children, that the number of the bullocks differed each day? They were reduced by one each day. I think what we learn is that God is to be worshipped exactly. He was very specific about how many of each animal was to be worshipped on each day. It reminds us that we ought not to say, behold, what a weariness it is in worshipping God. but we ought to delight in the worship of God. We also see that the bullets would have been the most costly of the sacrifices and they are reduced. Matthew Henry contends that it's likely that their number reduction reflects the fact that the legal dispensation was waxing old and that there would be a new covenant to come. It's very interesting that at the end of these sacrifices in John 7, 37, that Jesus says, come unto me and drink. After all these drink offerings and meat offerings and sacrifices, Jesus says, come unto Me and drink. So we see the fulfillment of them all in Christ and His sacrifice. We also see that the meal offerings and the drink offerings do attend these sacrifices. So there's communion that's going on as these burnt offerings are being displayed. And we're to be reminded in the burnt offering Romans 12, 1 and 2, where we're to offer ourselves as living sacrifices because of all the mercies of God that Paul had written of in Romans 1 through the end of chapter 11. Also, I hope you noted that every day there was a sin offering to be presented. As much joy as there was, and worship by giving themselves to God, In the burnt offerings, there was always confession. Confession was part of every day's sacrifices. Also, I hope you noted that the continual burnt offerings went on. That's why they were called the continual burnt offerings. Matthew Henry says, no extraordinary services should jostle out our stated. In other words, he's saying these extra public worship services, these holy convocations on the seventh day didn't negate the regular worship that was to go on each and every day, morning and evening. He also notes that in verse 39, you see that though these are public worship services that are talked of, these set feasts in verse 39, he goes on to say, beside your vows and your free will offerings and your burnt offerings and your meat offerings and your drink offerings and your peace offerings, what he's telling them is that they can individually do a little more than what was required publicly. And then we see in verse 40, faithful Moses telling the people all that the Lord commanded Him. He doesn't let off any or change the tune at all. He gives the people of God exactly what God had told Him to give Him as a faithful priest and prophet amongst the people of God.
