#2 The Fall of Jerusalem: Jehoiakim and Jehoiachin

The princes of the land present Jeremiah' prophecy of judgment to King Jehoiakim in his palace in the middle of winter. Unlike his father, Josiah, he responds in rebellion, slicing the scroll and tossing it into the fire.

He is forced to trade the Egyptian yoke for a Babylonian yoke, but he soon rebels. Nebuchadnezzar invades the land, takes Daniel captive, and carts away treasures from the temple. He installs his son Jehoiachin as king.

Jehoiachin reigns only three months. During his reign, Nebuchadnezzar once again lays siege to Jerusalem. The city falls. He carries away the king, Ezekiel, and treasures from the temple and 7,000 mighty men of war, craftsmen, and blacksmiths. He decimates the land.

Yet, in the middle of God's judgment, the Lord extends kindness. Both 2 Kings and Jeremiah end with the King of Babylon freeing Jehoiachin after 37 years in prison and giving him a lifetime pension, a display of hope and encouragement to the Judean captives throughout the empire.
