for tonight's message and a very burden for message tonight. We have Philippians chapter 2. Philippians chapter 2. And would you do this? Would you stand out of respect to God's word? If you're physically capable, if not, we certainly do understand. But let's look at Philippians chapter 2. Philippians chapter 2 and verse 1. The Bible says this, if there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies, fulfill ye my joy that ye be like minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory, but in loneliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God, but made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men. And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God Let's pray and ask the Lord to help us. As we look at this message, I've entitled, The Mind of Christ. The Mind of Christ. Heavenly Father, I ask for your help. Would you please give it? Fill me with your Spirit and with the very mind of Christ. Lord, I pray that each believer here would leave with the desire and the decision, Lord, to be filled with the Spirit of God and the mind of Christ. Lord, I pray that each one that does not know Christ as Savior this morning, that they would understand it is through Jesus Christ alone and what he did for us on the cross and his blood that was shed. Lord, help them to understand their sins must be forgiven and that they must trust Christ as Savior. God, I pray that you take away the hindrances, take away the false understandings, Misunderstandings and Lord. I pray that the clarity and the truth of the gospel would be seen today in hearts and lives I pray this in Jesus name. Amen. Thank you for standing. You may be seated This morning I had a cup of hot tea I also later had a little cranberry juice From your refrigerator, so I don't know whose juice I stole but some cranberry juice and I put it in a cup. I didn't do it at the same time. I'm not going to mix my tea with cranberry juice. I first drank the hot tea and if I had any left in the bottom that was kind of cold after drinking after it was warm, I dumped it out, rinsed it and then I filled it with the new liquid, the juice. Well just like that we would not put two different liquids that wouldn't go together in our drink and take it in We need to come to the Lord Jesus Christ and recognize when I am filled, my cup is filled with self, I cannot be filled with the Savior. It's either at any given point of the day I am filled with the flesh and myself and what I'm doing and my pride and all of what I can do, or I am filled with the Spirit and He is living the mind of Christ in us. This passage is a wonderful passage of scripture, speaking about what Jesus Christ is all about, and what His mind, and the characteristics of the mind of Christ. It's mentioned as a passage, it takes a Greek word, and the idea of it is emptied out. And why is it mentioned that? Does Jesus, when God Jesus Christ Himself came to earth, did He stop being God? No, there's one God in three persons. God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. And that is true. When Jesus came to earth, He did not empty Himself of His deity. That is, He did not stop being God. He was always God and always will be God. Can you say Amen to that? And we need to understand and believe very clearly that Jesus is God. But when Jesus came to earth, He emptied Himself of His glory. We sing wonderful, beautiful hymns this morning. I loved them. Fairest Lord Jesus, beautiful Savior, And it talked about how He was worthy of praise and adoration, Son of God and Son of Man. And as it did so, it mentions He was so worthy. But when He came to earth, He did not come with His full glory. He had this mind and these characteristics, and it was an example to us But as we look at the mind of Christ and the three characteristics that we're going to see this morning, they're very simple to understand. However, they're not very simple to be able to implement into our lives. The idea today isn't, here's your example, now you try real hard to do it. No, no, no. The idea is, when I am filled with self, there is no way I can have the characteristics of the mind of Christ. I need today to empty myself so I can be filled with Jesus Christ Himself, and then His mind is going to be in me. Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus. And this is the mind that must be in us to have these characteristics. Let's look at the passage this morning, and let's see this. Look at verse 5. The Bible says this. Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus. The idea of this is simply allow. You need to yield and allow the mind of Christ to be in you. It is a definite decision, not an automatic thing. Just like trusting Jesus Christ as Savior is not an automatic thing. No one is ever just automatically saved and on their way to heaven when they're born into this earth. When you're born, or even if you go to church, even if you do good things, it does not mean that you're saved. Trusting Jesus Christ as Savior is the only way to be saved. One man asked, what must I do to be saved? And the preacher said very clearly, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved. It is a clear, definite, one-time decision that I am trusting in Jesus Christ. As I do so, He then comes to live inside of me through the Spirit of God. And I need to allow, I need to let this mind of Christ be in me. A definite decision. Look at verse 6. being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God, but made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant." The first characteristic of the minded Christ is that He was a servant. He became a servant. We need to have that servanthood and that servant spirit as well. Are you serving actively and allowing the Lord Jesus Christ to serve through you? Notice it says, He thought of not robbing to be equal with God. That is, it was not wrong for Jesus Christ to say, I am God. We said very clearly that's the deity of Christ. The teaching that Jesus is God. He is the only one that could save us then. But when He came to earth, God Almighty did not come in full glory, born in a palace, ready and waiting and commanding us to serve Him. But the Bible says in Mark 10 and verse 45, He came not to be ministered unto, but to minister. What does it mean to minister? To serve. That's exactly right. It is the idea of I'm coming to serve. Jesus Christ came for one purpose, and that was to seek and to save that which was lost, and He did so in a serving way. He offered Himself as the sacrifice. He is seeking you. Perhaps you've come today, and maybe you're a guest or a visitor. Maybe you've come several weeks or even several months or a long time, and you say, I've been seeking God. Well, the only way that you have that desire to seek Him is because all along He's been seeking you, and you're not here by accident. I met two different people yesterday that I was able to witness to and give the Gospel. One, I believe, she had already trusted Christ as Savior, and she gave a word towards that. The other man took the track and is thinking about it. The truth is, I said, you know what, as I'm waiting for my luggage, two hours and a half, it was longer than my flight. I was standing by baggage claim. And that was exciting. And I said, OK, Lord, there must be a reason. Here's this man. He's a doctor. He used to live in New York and lives down in Florida. Can you imagine that? But he keeps it. And he said, I hate it down in Florida. I'd rather be back up in New York. And he was traveling up through here just to get a stay for a couple of days. And I said, you know what? And he's complaining about the bags, of course. People are frustrated two and a half hours without them. And I said, you know what? There would be no other way for us to meet today and have this conversation. If it wasn't this long, we're standing here, I got to give a little bit of my testimony, give a little bit of the gospel, and then later a track to be able to have him read it. You know, the truth is, you're here this morning not by accident, whether you're saved or not. And if you're here and you say, I don't know if I'm on my way to heaven. God is seeking you, and He did so in a way that He wants to save absolutely anyone. You say, well, I can't be saved because of my sin, or I've done too many bad things. Jesus Christ knows what you've done. He understands that. It is a sin and an offense to God. The Bible says all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. There's none righteous, no, not one. All of us fall short of God's glory. And there is a punishment, which is hell. that Jesus Christ became a servant in such a way that He took our sin for us and He made a way for us to be saved. And if you make the decision, what decision? To be baptized? No. To become a part of a church? No. But to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, then thou shalt be saved. It's according to God's Word. You can be saved today. He certainly became a servant. and he was serving others. The whole idea was to lift up others, to see the need, to meet the need. What is a servant? A servant is someone who sees the need and meets the need and is not concerned about the recognition. Are you serving actively in the church? Just to be saved and come in and to take in God's Word is a great thing, but you are plugged in to a local fellowship, a local assembly, a Baptist church here, and that's a wonderful thing, and you need to now be active in serving. Say, well, I don't know it. I can't teach or preach or maybe sing. You can do other things. You need to ask pastor what needs to be done. Today, there needed to be salt put out on the sidewalk. You know what? People need to do that. Things need to be cleaned. Things need to be fixed. And everything doesn't just fix themselves, does it? And okay, I didn't think so around here. It needs to be, you know what? We need servants to do things behind the scenes that no one else is going to see. No one's going to recognize. You may not be mentioned in the bulletin. They say, I need to do a part. I need to have an active part in serving. Are you doing that? Every one of us need to have a servant spirit. In John chapter 13, it gives us a great example of what Jesus does here in a record. In John chapter 13, it talks about when he was meeting together with his disciples for supper. And he ariseth from supper and laid aside his garments, and he took a towel and girded himself. The idea is he took out his outer part of his garment, left the main tunic there, but it would be like the outer robe, just like I would maybe take off my outer jacket and suit jacket. He put that down and put a towel over his, perhaps his arm or his shoulder, and he got a water basin, and he's beginning to do something. Wash his disciples' feet. It's an amazing thought. Then coming to Simon Peter, Peter said unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet? In other words, he's asking, are you going to wash my feet? Why is he asking this? Because this isn't the job of the master. This is the job of the servant. And he says, no, you can't do it. And Jesus explains that he needs to. Then, like Peter always does, he says, don't just wash my feet, wash my hands and my head and everything. He says, OK, no, you just I just need to wash your feet. Then after he does so, he goes around, he washes all the disciples feet. Verse 12 of John 13 says, So after he had washed their feet, and taken his garments, he was set down again, and said unto them, Know ye what I have done unto you? Ye call me Master and Lord, and ye say, Well, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet, ye also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example that ye should do as I have done unto you. We went ahead and got bowls ready and today. We're going to have a feet washing all right ready to take your shoes off Brother Miller, I don't think so wait a minute. Well. Why if we really did have get out the basins get out the bowls Start taking off the shoes start taking off the side. It's kind of Real doesn't it kind of gross? kind of let your imagination and all the ladies are already disgusted. And you know, it would be quite the thing. Now, is this saying that we actually have to wash feet and have to do so in today's culture, in today's time, right now? Right then, at that time, it was the need. With open sandals, dusty roads, sweaty feet, dirty feet, they would come in, they would take off their sandals, get ready to sit around for supper, One of the things to do, just to help, having showers every day and all that, is wash the feet. Okay, it was the need at the time. It was dirty. It was not something people aspired to, but it had to be done. And the Lord Jesus Christ, not just on one occasion, but throughout the whole time on earth, He was a servant for us. He was that example. We don't want to do something, we say, well, you know, I'd rather let somebody else less qualified do that. You know what? It would just be really good sometimes just to do something dirty. Something that nobody else wants to do. And say, Pastor, I'm willing to do this in the church. Ask somebody else, is there something else that could be done? What needs to be provided? A meal? Okay, let's get something. Oh, you need some help over here? Okay. What activity are we doing? Okay, let's get behind it. Let's be a servant. The first characteristic of the mind of Christ is he became a servant. A servant is someone who sees the need and meets the need and is not concerned about the recognition. But not only did he become a servant, there's a second characteristic. Look at Philippians chapter 2. Let's continue reading. Look at verse 7. "...but made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men, and being found in fashion as a man, he..." What's the next word? humbled himself. Second characteristic is humility. He became humble. The Lord Jesus Christ simply humbled himself. For God to become man was humbling. That was an incredible thing. You know, often times we think, wow, he was born in a lowly manger. He was born in perhaps the cave or stable or whatever with the animals. And what a lowly thing. Was that really lowly? maybe in our perspective, but for God to become a man and even be born, that is incredibly, well if he was born in the most palatial palace, if we could bring all the resources together of the world and create and build the most elaborate, largest, most modern palace that we could, it would still be a humbling experience. God says, the heaven is my throne and the earth is my footstool. You know, oftentimes we think that we're so big, in reality we are not. Our little schedules, our little agendas, our little problems. You know, oftentimes we look at a four-year-old or a five-year-old and we think, oh, they think they have problems. They don't have problems. They think they're busy. There's a pastor friend of mine, he was just sharing with him this past week and he said he went to his four-year-old and said, have you done your puzzle yet you got for Christmas? She says, no daddy, I've just been too busy. I've got baby dolls to take care of and I'm changing them and maybe I can work it in later. He says, well whenever you can fit it in your schedule I'd like to help you. We laugh at that. Because they can be so conservative. At that level, we think their problems and their needs are so big. At our level, we think they're so big. In reality, we're so small. I mean, we're on, how much do we get to travel? I've been to about 46 of the 50 states, maybe more than that. And the truth is, it's very, very small. I've only been to a couple of foreign countries. I don't travel, but Lord willing, in the near future, I'll be able to go to Africa, East Africa, to Tanzania, Africa, but in reality, I've not, has anybody been here and ever traveled to all five, all the, let's say all the continents? They say, no. How about all the 50 states? We probably would even struggle for someone to do that, maybe a few of us. The truth is, our globe is so large, but that's nothing compared to our solar system. And it's 93 million miles to our sun. That's incredible. And the sun is massive in size. Scores and scores and scores of the earth, hundreds of the earth, could fit inside of our sun in size. That's nothing compared as you continue going out. They can't even reach out to the furthest planet. And to go out to even the furthest one is just absolutely huge. That's nothing compared to some of the other stars. There are stars in the sky that are larger than our entire solar system. Our sun, our planets, all of them could fit into the circumference of one of those giant stars. That's nothing compared to our Milky Way galaxy. Do you realize if you went, of course with space we cannot, we don't typically measure things by miles, it's too short. So you have to measure it by light years. What's the speed of light? 186,000 miles per hour? That's about how fast they drive around here. No, it's not 186 miles per hour. It's per second. Now that's even faster here. 186,000 miles per second. Just like that, 186,000 miles. Okay, that's one second. Okay, how about an entire light year of all those seconds? Okay, if we started on one side of the Milky Way and we wanted to travel to the other side of the Milky Way, we wouldn't be able to be alive by the end of the trip. That's how many years, just to get to the end of our Milky Way galaxy. But that is nothing compared to what they're finding. With greater technology, greater telescopes, they're finding more, not just stars, but galaxies with millions and billions. And they say it's upward into the trillions of stars are without number. We can't number them. And larger than all of this is God Almighty. Amen. And He became a man. You want to know one definition for the word humble? It's a three-letter word. It's so simple, but it helps us. L-O-W. Low. Humility and being humble is being low. God, the Lord Jesus Christ, became man. What a humbling thing. Would we allow his mind to be in us? To say, dear God, there's no one that's beneath me that I'm not willing to reach. How about the homeless? How about those that are without the social graces that you have? Without the level of income that you have? We need to recognize we're not big. And if we were to simply go down to the city, midtown, downtown, and just stand beside a skyscraper, I remember the very first time, first year, I came and went to the New York, you know, the Empire State Building, and I was just struggling to keep up with our group, you know, I didn't want to be lost in Manhattan. And we finally got there, and it was, we were right there, and I saw Empire State Building. This is great! I look up, and I can't see the top. And you realize how small you are compared to these structures. You know, when it comes to humility, We have to simply be honest. It would be dishonest for me to stand beside the Empire State Building and say, I'm bigger than you are. That's not accurate. That's not honest. Honesty will lead to humility, which is I'm recognizing my position next to that structure is low. So just say, I'm low. Humility is not pushing yourself down. It's not saying I can't do anything right. It's not saying woe is me I'm so bad everybody else everybody else has talents, but I don't no no no it Humility is not focused on yourself Humility is when you're so focused on others. You're not thinking and considering That's the idea. I am low. I'm my focus is on others What would happen if you were dying in a hospital bed? Stage 4 or 5 cancer, and who would you be thinking about at that time? Your pain every day, you've got chemotherapy perhaps, maybe radiation, you've got doctors coming in and out, you get poked all the time, you're uncomfortable, you know your life is going to end, who would you be thinking about? Let's say you get mucked, and somebody brutally mistreats you in such a way that you're laying there street side and you're bleeding and you know your life is going to be taken away from you. Who are you going to be thinking about that time? Yourself. But there's a man in Philippians chapter 2 by the name of Epaphroditus who we hardly even know about. And he was on his deathbed. And on his deathbed, where was his focus? Look at verse 25. Verse 25 says this, Yet I suppose it necessary to send you Epaphroditus, my brother, and companion in labor, and fellow soldier, but your messenger, and he that ministered to my once. For he longed after you all, and was full of heaviness, because that he had been heard that he had been sick. Now wait just a second. He was full of heaviness, that means he was sorrowful and all of this, because he was sick? No. Look at the verse again. He was full of heaviness because that ye had heard that he had been sick. He was helping a church, and the church found out that he had been sick. And he's full of heaviness because he doesn't want them to worry about him, and he was sick. How sick was he? Cold? Flu? Kind of bad? Look if you would, verse 27. For indeed he was sick, nigh unto death. He was close to dying. But God had mercy on him. Not on him only, but on me also, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow. Look, if you would, skip down to verse 30. Because for the work of Christ, he was nigh unto death, not regarding his life to supply your lack of service toward me. What humility! So focused on others, he was concerned when people would have a worry or concern about himself. Would we have that type of humility? Would you say, you know what, I need to humble myself. Has God been speaking to your heart? Why is it oftentimes you do not respond in an invitation? The pastor says, would you come and pray? Would you come and get that decision taken care of? Would you make that what you need to do? We don't do it because of pride. What do we say? Today, God, I want to be humble. I need the mind of Christ. I need to be a servant. I haven't been active like I ought to be. I need to be humble. I need to be low and have my focus on others. There's one last characteristic. Look, if you would, in Philippians 2, and we're going to see not only did the Lord Jesus Christ become a servant and become humble, number three, He became obedient. He became obedient. Look, if you would, at verse 8. And being found in fashion as a man, He humbled Himself, help me out, and became what? Obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. He was obedient. He came to do one thing, the Father's will, and He went to the cross. He came to die. Would you look this way? Jesus Christ was obedient. He was willing. Voluntarily, He went to the cross to die for you and for me, for my sins and for your sins. If you ask me, are you going to heaven, Brother Chris, I would say definitely yes. Not because I'm good enough, but because Jesus Christ has already paid the penalty. Their sin must be punished. Everybody is a sinner. I'm a sinner. But the truth is, my sin cannot be excused. It cannot go unpunished. The Bible says the wages of sin is death. Whosoever is not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. There is a definite, definite, punishment and a hell and a fire, sin always will be punished. But the Bible says in Romans 5.8, but God commended His love toward us. That is, He demonstrated His love toward us, and that while we're yet sinners, Christ died for us. He did so because of obedience. He did so for love for us, and He died on the cross, taking our punishment for our sins. And when He went to the cross, He went through terrible punishment. incredible agony. Just the beating of the cat-o'-nine-tails, or some would call the phlegm. It's a short-handled whip with several leather straps with sharp objects and different things that throughout the years have been at the end, but no doubt to go through and tear through the skin, but then also through the deeper parts of the tissue. There would have been bleeding, terrible arterial bleeding, And he would have been done that as he is strapped with his hands above his head, stripped of clothing. It would have gone over his shoulders, his back, and his legs. They don't, with the Romans, they would not whip and say, okay, we'll do 39 stripes. They were experts on whipping and scourging and getting as close to death as possible and holding back. so they can continue to go through the excruciating torture. Then be prepared to go to the cross. The heavy beam of the cross is too much and he stumbles and falls. He lost blood, went through torture, torment, finally gets to the cross. Typically before the cross is placed in the hole, they put the nails in. hands and the feet. Usually the one in charge will put one in one side. Be careful not to pull the arms too tightly, but to allow for some flexing and bending of the elbows. And then they would put one nail through the arch of both feet. Lift it in place, place it into the hole with the thud. The top of Jesus' cross King of the Jews was placed. As he would hang on the cross, the pectoral muscles are typically almost go numb or paralyzed. And there are certain muscles called intercostal muscles. Those are the muscles on the inside that help us breathe and exhale. Hanging by the weight, just tearing through the metaparsal bones, through the hands, searing pain in the feet, but in order to breathe properly, to exhale and bring in oxygen, he has to raise himself to exhale and breathe in the oxygen again, and then go back down and rest and hanging in that way. Each time pushing up, no doubt searing pain through the feet. And what happens as he goes up? and down the rough timber of the cross. His back has already been whipped and scourged. Can you imagine the excruciating pain? He comes up, and whenever he says any of the seven statements, no doubt he had to get enough breath to do so. And one of the statements he said was, It is what? Jesus Christ paid the penalty for our sin. He is obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. And at a particular time, when it went dark for those three hours, when the veil of the temple was rent, all of that was taking place, Jesus took upon Himself the sin of us, and He paid that penalty in full. The Bible says it's not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us. He was obedient for you and for me. But then it says in verse 10, I'm sorry, in verse 9, wherefore God also hath highly exalted him and given him a name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow of things in heaven and things in earth and things under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Do you know Jesus Christ is your Savior today, and is He your Lord? You can say, I am obedient. If He tells me to do something, I will do it. If He tells me to go soul hunting, I will do it. If He tells me to read the Bible, if He tells me to go to church, I will do it. I am obedience. You do not cannot say you are obedient and you love God like you ought when you do not do what He says. Would you say this morning, I need to confess the sin and ask Him to fill me with His mind so I can be a servant, so I can be humble, so I can be obedient and do what I ought to do for the Lord Jesus Christ. I cannot do it myself. I need Him. And it is at the name of the Lord Jesus Christ every knee should bow. It's interesting. There are several names that are given to the Lord. throughout the Word of God. The Lord, Lord Jesus Christ, Lord of Glory, the Lord from Heaven, the Lord of the Holy Prophets, Lord of Hosts, Lord our Righteousness, my Lord and my God, Bridegroom, Deliverer, Emmanuel, Firstfruits, Forerunner, Governor, Immortal, Intercessor, Invisible, Lawgiver, Master, Mediator, Redeemer, Shiloh, Teacher, Wonderful, Counselor, Savior, Horn of Salvation, Lord and Savior, a Prince and Savior, Mighty to Save, of the world, the door, the way, the truth, the life, the bread of life, the prince of life, the tree of life, the water of life, the word of life, life eternal." the living water, the living bread, the hidden manna, the resurrection and the life, our advocate, our peace, our ransom, our Passover, our great high priest, the door of the sheep, a lamb without spot or blemish, the chief shepherd, the good shepherd, the shepherd and bishop of your souls, the vine, the day star, the bright and morning star, the rose of Sharon, the lily of the valley, the one altogether lovely, the fairest among ten thousand, a man of sorrows, a friend of sinners, the light of the world, a stone, a tri-stone, a chief cornerstone, the head of the church, a sure foundation, that rock, the rock of ages, the righteous judge, judge of all the earth, the first and the last, the beginning and the end, the Alpha and Omega, the Ancient of Days, the Prince of Peace, the King of Peace, the King of the Jews, the King of Israel, the King of Righteousness, the King Eternal, the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords, the Son of the Highest, the Only Begotten Son of God, the Son of the Living God, the Holy One of God, holy and just, the elect of God, the gift of God, the image of God, the power of God, the wisdom of God, the Word of God, the Lamb of God, who has taken away the sins of the world. God with us, God our Savior, mighty God, everlasting Father, Almighty, I AM. What name does the Lord Jesus Christ refer to Himself the most? Son of God? King of kings? The Lord of Lords throughout the Gospels some 81 times is referred to simply as the Son of Man. A servant who is humble and obedient. May we be like the Lord Jesus Christ because we will be filled with the Lord Jesus Christ. The only way to have His mind is to be filled with Him. Would you allow Him to do that this morning for you? If you're not saved, would you trust Christ to save you today and see that what He went through on the cross is for your sins and for your behalf? As a Christian, would you allow God to do His work in your life? Father, I pray for your health. Lord, help us to simply be responsive and help us to be obedient to you and to your Word. You've spoken to hearts, you've met with us, and thank you, God, for that. Lord, I pray you'd help us to simply be a servant, and be humble, and be obedient. And Lord, I ask today, help us to see the truth that we cannot try to implement or duplicate these things on our own. We must be filled with you in your mind. So Lord, I pray you'd help right now, save those that need to be saved, and help those Christians.
