2Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.1. "HIS" "promise" - What is the promise of God we perceive here - The opposite of "perish" ie life ie salvation. 2. "longsuffering" - Why? Is time and human use of time going to make any difference to salvation? No. 3. "not willing that any should perish" - This must relate directly back to the "promise" (receivers) of God, the elect will not perish but receive eternal life. Election the promise of God unto salvation is immutable. And it doesn't have anything to do with human input. So why the verse on this subject? Note previous verses 3 Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, 4 And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. 5 For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God .... Therefore in the verse 9 above - All Peter is doing is allaying the doubts of some as to the return of Christ who will bring salvation and eternal life - against the worldly scorn. |
