Sermon:
Dealing with Divisions
Rev. Reggie Kimbro
1
comment
“ We’re not always the best judges of what we need ”
In a message on 3 John, David Legge said “I haven't been in the Lord's work too long, but I've learned this much in the short time that I've been in it: much of the distress and the cause for division in churches has very little to do with doctrine. Sometimes that's the facade that is used to mask, in hypocrisy, personality clashes and problems with other people.” J. C. Ryle wisely said “Our Lord has many weak children in his family, many dull pupils in his school, many raw soldiers in his army, many lame sheep in his flock. Yet he bears with them all, and casts none away. Happy is that Christian who has learned to do likewise with his brethren.” 1 Corinthians 12:21 “And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you.”

Sermon:
Greatly Beloved – eternally
Rev William Macleod

“ Listen to this! ”
I listened to this wonderful message on the love of God with much blessing! I'm grateful for the fervent Bible preaching of Pastor Macleod. Here's a small sample... "How does Daniel get this name 'O man greatly beloved'? Is this not a name that all of us have that are true Christians? We're all greatly beloved. How amazing is God's love for us. God's love for us is infinite - you cannot measure it. God's love for us is so great that He sent His own Son to die for you and for me! And the love of the Son of God is so great that He laid down His life for us! Where can you get greater love than that? 'But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us' (Romans 5:8). O man greatly beloved! O woman greatly beloved! God's amazing love for you - it never had a beginning and will never have an end - it's always the same - always faithful and true." Amen!

“ Christ will search for His sheep and deliver them! ”
There is Biblical comfort found in Ezekiel 34 for all those scattered by the spirit of Diotrephes--Christ will search for His sheep: [4-6] "The weak you have not strengthened, nor have you healed those who were sick, nor bound up the broken, nor brought back what was driven away, nor sought what was lost; but with force and cruelty you have ruled them. So they were scattered because there was no shepherd; and they became food for all the beasts of the field when they were scattered. My sheep wandered through all the mountains, and on every high hill; yes, My flock was scattered over the whole face of the earth, and no one was seeking or searching for them." [9-12] "Therefore, O shepherds, hear the word of the Lord! Thus says the Lord God: Behold, I am against the shepherds, and I will require My flock at their hand; I will cause them to cease feeding the sheep, and the shepherds shall feed themselves no more; for I will deliver My flock from their mouths, that they may no longer be food for them. For thus says the Lord God: Indeed I Myself will search for My sheep and seek them out. As a shepherd seeks out his flock on the day he is among his scattered sheep, so will I seek out My sheep and deliver them from all the places where they were scattered on a cloudy and dark day."

“ Deliver us from the spirit of Diotrephes! ”
May Christ deliver the Church from the spirit of Diotrephes and raise up many shepherds with the heart of Barnabas. J.C. Ryle said "Our Lord has many weak children in his family, many dull pupils in his school, many raw soldiers in his army, many lame sheep in his flock. Yet he bears with them all, and casts none away. Happy is that Christian who has learned to do likewise with his brethren."

“ Diotrephes and Church Dictators are Dangerous! ”
“I haven't been in the Lord's work too long, but I've learned this much in the short time that I've been in it: much of the distress and the cause for division in churches has very little to do with doctrine. Sometimes that's the facade that is used to mask, in hypocrisy, personality clashes and problems with other people. Diotrephes and church dictators are dangerous people. Let me say that we should never ever underestimate how a resident dictator can damage a church - do you know why? Because such leadership grieves the Holy Spirit of God. Jesus Christ is the only Head of the church. Col. 1:18 says: 'He is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence'- He is to be Lord in the assembly, no one else!” -from a message preached by David Legge on 3 John

“ Refreshing Gospel Preaching in a Day of Apostasy! ”
(1) Salvation in it's Concentration - it's exclusively in the Lord Jesus Christ. In 1 Cor 15:45 the name "Last Adam" signifies that there's no one after or apart from Christ. Acts 4:12 "Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved." (2) Salvation in it's Foundation - the Blood sacrifice of Christ appointed by God is the only foundation. The Blood of Christ signifies the satisfaction of God's holy and just demands with regards to sin. It is blood that makes atonement for the soul. (3) Salvation in it's Expectation - we shall be Saved from wrath through Him. The final outcome of being justified is being saved from sin's final and eternal destruction. This is where the believer's assurance arises when wrestling with doubts and fears. Christ's risen life is the guarantee of the life of His people! Christ said in John 14:9 "because I live, ye shall live also." Hebrews 7:25 says "Wherefore He is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by Him, seeing He ever liveth to make intercession for them." (4) Salvation in it's Jubilation - "And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement." (Romans 5:11) Amen!

“ 7 Great 'I Wills' of the Lord Jesus Christ! ”
(1) Conversion: Jn 6:37 "All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out." (2) Cleansing: Lk 5:12-13 "And it came to pass, when he was in a certain city, behold a man full of leprosy: who seeing Jesus fell on his face, and besought him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. And he put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will: be thou clean. And immediately the leprosy departed from him." (3) Confession: Mt 10:32 "Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven." (4) Consecration: Mt 4:19 "And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men." (5) Comfort: Jn 14:18 "I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you." (6) Confirmation: Jn 6:39-40 "And this is the Father’s will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day. And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day." (7) Conclusion: Jn 17:24a "Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory..." Amen!

Sermon:
And it Came to Pass
Rev. Roger Higginson

“ Great Sermon! ”
"Sometimes, whenever we're in the midst of a trial - in that fiery furnace being tried and tested we wonder - are we really in the will of God for our lives. Remember, Peter wrote in his first epistle 'Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you'. He is telling us that whenever adversity comes we're not think that it's unusual or out of sorts with the will of God or out of keeping with the Christian life. Rather, we are to expect adversity. And sometimes in trial it can seem that there's no end in sight but ultimately it also will 'come to pass'. Your trial beloved WILL 'come to pass' and until it does the grace of God is sufficient for you! The great apostle Paul was afflicted with a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet him. He sought the Lord 3 times that it would depart from him but the Lord did not promise to take it away - but, He promised that 'My grace is sufficient for thee, for My strength is made perfect in weakness' (2 Cor 12:9). There is no ill that heaven will not (ultimately) rectify!" Psalm 34:19 says "Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the Lord delivereth him out of them all." Job 23:10b says "...when He hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold." Amen!

“ A Word in Season ”
A helpful Bible message for the new year. The phrase "And it came to pass" occurs 396 times in our Authorized Version. These words speak to us of (1) The Fleeting Nature of History. (2) The Sovereign Nature of Adversity. (3) The Limited Nature of Opportunity. (4) The Solid Nature of Expectancy. (5) The Unfathomable Nature of Eternity.

Filthy Garments Replaced
Rev William Macleod

“ How wonderful the Lord is to us! ”
"The fourth vision of Zechariah the prophet is that of Joshua the high priest standing before the Lord in filthy garments and Satan standing at his right hand to accuse him. A very different vision but an encouraging one as well - very encouraging! For the servants of the Lord it's encouraging but for all the Lord's people - for every one of us are clothed in filthy garments are we not? We're all filthy sinners and we all deserve to be accused by Satan and condemned and cast into hell but we're clothed with new white robes. How wonderful the Lord is to us! Taking away our filthy garments and giving us beautiful white robes. Who are these arrayed in white raiment? These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. (Revelation 7:14)"

“ What about eternity? ”
The work of the Mediator goes on in eternity! (1) His work as a Prophet goes on - teaching His people forever - leading them to living fountains of water. More and more we are being led into the Truth and being taught by the Great Prophet Christ! (2) Christ's Kingship goes on as He is the Head of His people forever. (3) Our continuance in heaven is dependent upon His Priestly intercession for us - Christ ever lives to make intercession for us

“ The Mediator in the Garden of Eden! ”
"What was the first act of the Mediator? It was to come into the garden immediately after man's sin and to search for Adam. Not to leave Adam to die and perish but to come into the garden and to ask him... 'where art thou'? In Genesis 3, footsteps were heard in the garden in the cool of the day. Whose footsteps? The Angel of the Covenant-- God taking on human form in the Old Testament. The Angel of the Covenant intercedes. Adam is not immediately cast into hell. Spiritual death occurs but not physical death or eternal death. Physical death begins but the Mediator is there stepping into the breach and He says the seed of the woman shall bruise the serpent's head. I will crush Satan's head and there He is acting as the priest. A few verses later He's taking animals and killing these animals and taking their skins and clothing Adam and Eve. The Great Priest Himself showed them through sacrifices to look forward to the great sacrifice of Christ Himself!"

“ We need a priest - a very special Priest! ”
Why do we need a priest? We need a priest because we are sinners under condemnation and God's wrath (Rom 1:18) How can we approach GOD without a priest? We can't because our GOD is a consuming fire (Heb 12:29) "Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity..." (Hab 1:13a) What is a priest? A man sent to GOD on behalf of men 1. He is man's representative before GOD (Heb 2:17) 2. He offers both gifts and sacrifices for sins (Heb 5:1) 3. He intercedes and prays for us (Heb 7:25) "...And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous" (1 John 2:1b) Westminster Shorter Catechism Q. 25. How does Christ execute the office of a priest? A. Christ executes the office of a priest, in his once offering up of Himself a sacrifice to satisfy divine justice, and reconcile us to God, and in making continual intercession for us I'm blessed by the earnest Bible teaching from Knightswood FCS(C)

“ Christ doesn't cast away the castaways! ”
"Him that justifieth the ungodly." They seem to me to be very wonderful words. Are you not surprised that there should be such an expression as that in the Bible, "That justifieth the ungodly?" I have heard that men that hate the doctrines of the cross bring it as a charge against God, that He saves wicked men and receives to Himself the vilest of the vile. See how this Scripture accepts the charge, and plainly states it! By the mouth of His servant Paul, by the inspiration of the Holy Ghost, He takes to Himself the title of "Him that justifieth the ungodly." He makes those just who are unjust, forgives those who deserve to be punished, and favors those who deserve no favor. You thought, did you not, that salvation was for the good? that God's grace was for the pure and holy, who are free from sin? It has fallen into your mind that, if you were excellent, then God would reward you; and you have thought that because you are not worthy, therefore there could be no way of your enjoying His favor. You must be somewhat surprised to read a text like this: "Him that justifieth the ungodly. " I do not wonder that you are surprised; for with all my familiarity with the great grace of God, I never cease to wonder at it. -- Spurgeon, All of Grace

“ Great Sermon! ”
An important message for broken hearts. Christ deals with our past, present and future-- 1. Past: thank God that the Blood of Jesus Christ cleanses from all sin 2. Present: we don't have to face the problems of life alone for God is our help 3. Future: because He lives we can face tomorrow. Happy is he that has the God of Jacob for his help! Christ is the believer's happiness, help and hope. The Lord makes all the difference. Christ is everything we need. He is accessible for weary, sad and burdened souls. These powerful truths are illustrated in Biblical account of the demoniac, the dying daughter and the woman with sickness. The Lord Jesus Christ transforms the nobody into somebody. Thank God He doesn't cast away the castaways! "They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance" Mk 2:17. I'm blessed by the earnest Bible preaching, praying and congregational singing of Magherafelt FPC
