Another good one here,Seaton:

Seaton wrote:
Just look at the church goers at Matt 7:21-23, if they marry and divorce then it will be because of their lack of God's law in them!!
This gets back to the total depravity of human nature with unconditional election and the other Biblical doctrines of grace following close behind.

No, a Christian does not need to watch TV. Many would be better off without it. It's not necessary. I'd also question any preacher who says God told him we need to give a certain amount of money. God already laid out the financial rules in the scriptures. If we're not following those, it's because we don't know the scriptures or we choose to disobey what God has already said on the matter. If a preacher is speaking for God about money, it's very likely that person's ministry is messed up instead of the audience being messed up.

Agree. The TBN group has gotten out of hand.

Thanks Terry. I wouldn't question one's salvation if they had an Acts 10 experience. However, I'm not going to build a whole doctrinal system and say it's got to be the same for everyone, that they must speak in tongues or demonstrate a manifestation to prove salvation. A changed life and confessing Jesus as Lord would be satisfactory for me. The reality of receiving the Holy Spirit upon conversion at the preaching of the Gospel happens yet today without a doubt, having witnessed changed lives and rejoicing at the hearing of the word. This is evidence of the testimony by the Apostles that the word of God is quick and sharp...alive and able to awaken the conscience and free a soul from the devil's grasp.

Terry,
That doesn't answer my question. So what's your opinion of one who spoke in tongues upon hearing of their salvation?

What if somebody in this day and age experiences something very similar to Acts 10:43 & 44; they hear the Gospel and rejoice and speak in tongues. I've heard of this happening. What's the cessationist's answer?

To add some insight, Abigail, from the Calvinist's point of view, one is set free to submit to God, but no one can submit until set free by the Gospel of Jesus Christ and his shed blood through faith in this word of good news. Also, Protestants see works as gratitude to God's grace. They do them out of humility and thanks for what God has done. Similar to your words "we love Him and appreciate the price He paid for our salvation with redemption from hell."

Abigail, thanks for the charitable post. I think sometimes the language is confused. Like with works. When we say faith, we mean faith as the foundation and cornerstone of the Christian life, life meaning a living faith. When some hear "faith" they go on alert and think works are no longer in the equation, which really is not true(except for the antinomians which have gone off into heretical understandings of grace and faith.) And some of us, when we hear "works" get concerned faith will be shoved into the background.

Abigail, I don't object to angelic messages as described in the Bible, such as Revelation. I don't believe Revelation gives justification to give apparitions and messages free reign in the visible church. Thankfully with the scriptural description, we'll know what to expect in the last days or on any day.
Paul had problems with the Galatians. He was grieved they were being so easily moved to another gospel. Chapter 4 bears it out clearly with their bondage to observances. See also chapter 3. He warned of false gospels by angels. It's being fulfilled today and will be later. It's a good thing we have the scriptures to determine the false from the true. I did not say they were not brethren, but he warned them of problems to come as well as problems they were having(contained in Chapters 3 and 4). I agree with Hebrews description of angels. I'm not implying I don't believe in angels. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Thankfully we have scriptural record of what to expect to judge the false from the true. This will be very important in the last days. My main point was to bring out evidence that many professing Christians have disobeyed Paul's warning to the Galatians, working in the flesh, heeding false angelic messages and observances of unnecessary holy days. All for now.

Good point Terry, but the Roman church has a good way of getting around this by calling the pope the vicar of Christ or Christ's representative. So I guess if you see the pope doing this, it's what Christ would do. I don't believe it's true and very wholesome to Christian purity to have such a doctrine about the papacy. In the new testament we see the Apostles holding discussions with pagans, but were these peace conferences? I don't think so. They were times to prove the truth of the Gospel. Will the pope do this at the Peace Conference? Even if he did, he's preaching another gospel that has been refined by many traditions and opinions.

But where do we see a Biblical description of Christians praying to the cloud of witnesses, or saying we should?

Abigail, Paul was evidently aware of heresies then as now. Read the history of the Mormons(angels talking to Joseph Smith and then we have the Book of Mormon). Read about all the apparitions in Catholic experience(angels, saints, and so on telling people to do this or that, often times contrary to the scriptures). Galatians 4 clearly show the problem among the Galatians. Paul was grieved they were caught up in observances of days. The Roman church has all kinds of saints days, Christmas, Easter, etc. If you're Catholic you have to observe these or be declared in sin. See Gal. 4:10. Who went to hell? Unless the Apostle says who went to hell I can't give you an answer. Those who are accursed will be in hell. So that would include teachers of false gospels, angels with another gospel, etc. if that's what you're asking. Another gospel will not get one to heaven, so the only alternative......I think we know the answer . Concerning abstinence, see 1 Tim 4:3. It ties in well with Galatians and the whole Roman Catholic religion. Forbidding marriage is also in there. As for angels in Revelation, that's fine. That's the scripture record. But what do we do with modern claims, the Mormons and Catholics being examples. I'm not following them.

Papist, yes, if it was the true church. But I wouldn't obey it if it's going off into territory such as obligatory holy days abstaining from foods, celibacy, etc. As for morals, at least the papacy sees the light there. If somebody doesn't see the sin of abortion or thinks the Gospel is a license to sin, they are wrong. Orthodox Protestants would say the same. Prots have fought against cheap grace and lawlessness. Faith will have works, but extra biblical works need not be added to faith.

The Galatians were pure saints in comparison to this modern generation.
Taking a look at Galatians 1 and 4 it's evident the heresies plaguing the Roman and Orthodox Catholic churches were alive then also: Angels with messages, observing days, abstaining from certain foods, celibate clergy, etc. The Apostles called it another gospel and declared them accursed twice. But that's what happens when works and faith get confused.

Papist, in my reading of Catholic literature I am certain there was mention that if a holy day of obligation is missed without worthy cause it's a sin. Did I read wrong? True faith will have good works, but not those recommended by the papacy.

He has every right not only to downplay but to reject the statement. Gospels and messages from angels are denounced as accursed and false by the Apostles, but the RCC harbors these. Evidently the RCC is not the One True Church.

Well there are good works we don't have to do and those are the works imposed by the RCC. Yes, Jesus did say if we love him to keep his commandments. Did he also command indulgences and observations of holy days with the threat of sin on one's soul if those days aren't observed? I don't think so.

Spiritual,
Where Mr. Luther or anybody is wrong, they stand to be corrected and any words not in comformity to scripture need to be rejected. Such applies to Luther and any other person. Exactly how holy of a life you are living, I don't know. And I don't attack one for living in actual holiness. If you are living such a life, great. May the Lord give us victory of sin death and the devil. I know he will. He's able to keep me from falling according to the testimony of the Apostles.

Good one, Walt. Those who reject justification by faith alone have formulated their own standards of what is good or holy and is worthy of salvation and keeping it.
