Sermon:
I Kill I Make Alive
Pastor Michael Pickett
1
comment
“ Pastor, as you know... ”
Dear Pastor, As you know, this verse is quoted, in part, by Hannah in 1 Samuel 2:5-9. Hannah prayed with great rejoicing, thanking God for answering her supplication for a child. She said, "...the barren hath born seven; and she that hath many children is waxed feeble. The LORD killeth, and maketh alive: He bringeth down to the grave and bringeth up. The LORD maketh poor, and maketh rich, He bringeth low and lifteth up...He will keep the feet of His saints, and the wicked shall be silent in darkness; for by strength shall no man prevail." I was amazed to read Hannah's recollection of Dt. 32:39, and to consider how she interpreted this verse in light of her personal condition. She was the barren woman, continually taunted by the arrogant "other woman", Peninnah, who had 5 children. Moses emphasized God's sure judgment upon the many wicked enemies of God and His people, while Hannah emphasized God's gracious lovingkindness in His providence to the humble, trusting heart. Both Moses and Hannah spoke according to one truth - "He killeth and maketh alive". What a wondrous treasure is the Word of God! In Christ, Mrs. Vick

Tonight, we received an answer, in part, simply being led to your sermon. Thank you so much. As you have said, "...from fear to faith".

“ How glorious! How excellent! ”
What a wonderful sermon. Thank you so much. Whenever I am tempted to return to my "good works" to please Him, I recall Hebrews 11:11, and wonder again how Sara could possibly have conceived seed by her own strength, by trying to "do good". And not only that, the child that was formed within her body could never have been, without a living faith possessed by her own husband. None of this is due to her own goodness or wisdom or faith. Rather, all this is of God alone, working His faith in each believer. (Luther 95 Theses)

“ Pricked in the heart! ”
We are following you, Angus, in your journey through the US, and we are praying for you, for the LORD's greatest blessings upon you. This wonderful message has reminded us of Newton's sacred poem, "The castle of the human heart Strong in its native sin; Is guarded well, in every part, By him who dwells within...But Jesus, stronger far than he, In his appointed hour Appears, to set his people free From the usurper's pow'r." Safe travels, dear brother. Safe keeping and continued prosperity.

“ Thank you, Allan. ”
We were waiting for your sermon on Song of Solomon, Chapter 8, and we were not disappointed. One thousand sermons could be preached on this portion of Scripture, but it is enough. So much enjoyed the hymn-singing, too: "O let my name engraven stand both on Thy Heart and on Thy Hand; seal me upon Thy Arm, and wear that pledge of love forever there." Isaac Watts

“ '...none but Zion's children know.' ”
Dear Angus and all our brothers and sisters in Nowra, We loved hearing the wonderful Newton hymn, sung as a sort of interlude in your message (Olney Hymnal 66 on Isaiah 33:5-24) How do we find strength renewed, weariness dispelled and courage to go on enlarging? By remembering Him Who died that we might live and by recalling His promise to carry us home at last. "Savior, if of Zion's city I through grace a member am; let the world deride or pity, I will glory in Thy Name. Fading is the worldling's pleasure, all his boasted pomp and show; solid joys and lasting treasure, none but Zion's children know."

The house of bread
Angus Fisher

“ Thank you so much, ”
Dear Angus, Your message touched my heart with both bitter and sweet, as I have so often thought about all the many Elimelechs the LORD used to bring me safely home to the House of Bread. Praise His Name, there were many Naomis, too. You made me think that we Ruths must be on guard to resist Elimelech in our own soul, being so often tempted to go along with fleshly logic in a trial. I trust Him to make me into a Naomi then, that I might bring another Moabitess with me back to Israel, where Boaz is waiting! We love you all and long to see you someday soon. We follow along with every sermon, but we miss hearing the music. Love in Christ, Kathleen

“ What an encouragement! ”
Pastor Hughes, We so much appreciate this sermon and want to send this brief note to thank you. Beyond an explanation, suffice to say that this message was tailor-made for us at this very moment. How great is our LORD, and how mysterious is His infinite ability to speak His Word to the needy heart of each redeemed soul.

We are praying for you and Nancy and the flock the LORD has given to you. Great is the LORD and greatly to be praised.

Sermon:
The Blessedness
Angus Fisher
1
comment
“ Great Sermon! ”
The question you directed us to, "Where is then the blessedness ye spake of?" in Galatians 4:15, put the Cowper hymn poem "Walking With God" in my mind (Olney Hymnal, Book I, Hymn 3). Mr. Cowper says, "Where is the blessedness I knew, when first I saw the LORD? Where is the soul-refreshing view of JESUS and His Word?" Although the poem is inscribed to be based on Genesis 5:24 - "Enoch walked with God and the LORD took him" - the reference to Galatians 4:15 is striking. In a later verse, Mr. Cowper says, "Return, O Holy Dove, return, Sweet messenger of rest; I hate the sin that made Thee mourn and drove Thee from my breast." After hearing your message, I realized that "the sin" Cowper must be referring to is going back to the law for one's righteousness, since this is the theme of the letter to the Galatians. Oh, how this must grieve the Holy Spirit of our God! Thank you for reminding me that all our righteousness IS Christ alone, the Hope of Glory! Wonderful sermon. Thank you so much.

“ Such a beautiful message! ”
Dear Allan, We so much enjoyed the message you have delivered. We waited for the message, hoping to hear from our LORD with many petitions, and He answered our hearts with great comfort. May our LORD continue to prosper your understanding and your ability to speak to the flock of God. Oh yes, "...whate'er my God ordains is right..." Thank you so much.

“ What a great message! ”
Dear Mr. Chapman, We were thrilled to hear you tell of loving and being loved by our LORD Jesus Christ. "The love of JESUS, what it is, only His loved ones know." Thank you so much for this simple, inspiring message. We just can't help loving Him, thanks to Him! How great is our LORD and how we love to tell the story of the Lamb that died "for me". The Song of Solomon passages are very dear, aren't they? May He continue to pour His love into our hearts, now and forevermore.

Thank you so much. We are so grateful to our LORD to be able to hear the messages He has laid on our heart, because the messages He has given to you...is for us. Praise His Holy Name forever and ever. (Father, give us grace to KNOW that all the things we must count as loss for Christ are worthless, even harmful things, as dung must be cast away!)

“ What a Word! ”
What a wonderful sermon! What a wonderful token! What a wonderful answer to my prayer! I have trusted Him for revival, now it's been many years, and the LORD is doing SO MUCH to prove that He will bring a great revival in the preaching and the hearing of the Gospel of free sovereign grace. Allan, thank you for receiving this word from our God, by faith, and telling the message in such an explicit way! LORD, bring revival and increase our faith.

“ Heard this message live during the Service ”
Absolutely riveting. Mr. Chapman, you put aside the "line upon line, percept upon precept" sermon formula (ho hum) and spoke to fellow soldiers in the trenches, alongside us, from the trenches. The ones with the pillows sewn to their sleeves could never hear what you said, but to us - the destitute, the weary, the beaten and starving - it was a message from our Commander-in-Chief, our LORD Jesus Christ, saying, "I AM with you. These afflictions are My appointed gifts, that you may come forth as gold refined by fire". Yes, Mr. Chapman, someone is ALWAYS messing with me. Praise His Holy Name. Go on, dear brother, in the strength and the power of Him Who loved us and died for us. Thank you for speaking "hard things, not easy to be understood". Fare no worldly ones can eat.

“ Dear Angus and our brothers and sisters in Nowra, ”
We have been so happy in our LORD Jesus, hearing these sermons through the incredible Word of God to the church in Thessalonica. How wonderful to know He wrote it to all of us, too. Our God has told us everything we must know, and we are continually astonished to see a little of His great love, power, mercy, strength, wisdom and righteousness by the revelation to our hearts in His Word. Soon, we shall see Him Face-to-face. We are praying for you all. Love in Christ, Arthur and Kathleen
