In Rom. 3:25 and Heb. 9:5 (A.V., "mercy-seat") the Greek word _hilasterion_ is used. It is the word employed by the LXX. translators in Ex. 25:17 and elsewhere as the equivalent for the Hebrew _kapporeth_, which means "covering," and is used of the lid of the ark of the covenant (Ex. 25:21; 30:6). This Greek word (hilasterion) came to denote not only the mercy-seat or lid of the ark, but also propitation or reconciliation by blood. On the great day of atonement the high priest carried the blood of the sacrifice he offered for all the people within the veil and sprinkled with it the "mercy-seat," and so made propitiation.

In 1 John 2:2; 4:10, Christ is called the "propitiation for our sins." Here a different Greek word is used (hilasmos). Christ is "the propitiation," because by his becoming our substitute and assuming our obligations he expiated our guilt, covered it, by the vicarious punishment which he endured. (Comp. Heb. 2:17, where the expression "make reconciliation" of the A.V. is more correctly in the R.V. "make propitiation.")

[This is in agreement with what the Bible actually says. The Bible never says Jesus took the full punishment of all our sins upon himself. It just plain doesn't say that. His blood cleanses us from sin, not pays for our sins.]

1 Corinthians 15:3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
1 Peter 2:24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.
Romans 5:9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.
Romans 3:25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;

it also seems you do not understand the term propititiation.

hello michael,

i believe the bible teaches clearly that God's plan stands, yet men remain accountable for their own decisions.

this is difficult for the human mind to accept as it is beyond our understanding. the bible teaches and i accept it.

freewiller/dwayne/9/11 and other pseuds said

[Both of these words, "sovereign" and "eternal decree," with their peculiar Calvinist cultic definitions, are what drives the entire religious system.]

Psalm 148:4
Praise him, ye heavens of heavens, and ye waters that be above the heavens.
Psalm 148:5 Let them praise the name of the LORD: for he commanded, and they were created.
Psalm 148:6
He hath also stablished them for ever and ever: *he hath made a decree which shall not pass.*

Psalm 33:11 The counsel of the LORD standeth for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.

Proverbs 19:21 There are many devices in a man's heart; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand.

Hebrews 6:17 Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath:

oops, freewiller, i forgot, you base your doctrine on orwell, not the bible.

sad.

freewiller/ dwayne/ 9/11 and whatever other pseud you wish to adopt,

i doubt that you have been obedient to the commands of Christ.
can you say you have loved the Lord your God with all your heart soul mind and strength?
and your neighbour as yourself?

where is your self righteousness now.

as i have said, no wedding garment, no admittance.

you seem to think that garment you are busy sewing from filthy rags will suffice.

michael,
refreshing to see the unity of the body of Christ being recognised, despite differences.
this is not to minimise doctrinal differences, for some go to the heart of the gospel.
yet, an appreciation and thankfulness to the Lord for His death on the cross for a worthless ruined sinner, like me, is always a good basis for fellowship.
i won't hide my own calvinistic leanings. it was not always this way, yet this is what the Lord has taught me to believe, yet it is no bar to recognising others as brethren who too rely on Christ alone for salvation, and who depend upon His sufficient grace daily.

michael from endicott,
blessings to you.
i recall reading from your posts that you are a converted r.c.
alas, i fear you may have fallen prey to what another rc convert friend of mine describes as "every protestant and their dog thinking it is their God given right to instruct you in the things of God"
for him, that wasn't just calvinists, but brethren, who fell out with him when he queried the rapture and dispensationalism, baptists when he queried worship, presbyterians when he queried church government etc. etc.
oh that the Lord would lead you and guide you into all truth.
blessings

well dwayne

why is it no surprise that you ally yourself with one whom most on this board treat as a stranger to grace?

alas, the folk here may pray for the salvation of you both, the one who believes that an empty profession will save, and the other who believes his/her own piety is the only ground for salvation.
you must believe the Lord got it wrong when He said "it is finished." in your accursed doctrine it wasn't. His work wssn't complete without your obedience. so much for Christ seeing the travail of His soul and being satisfied.

i think the best place for you, dwayne/9/11 is in the rcc. they are quite amenable to the idea of a co redemptress, and this seems to be part of your theology too. "Christ and me together redeem my soul."

but its good to see you straying off topic. the Lord wants you to develop biblical doctrine in every area, not just your pet topic (where i still think you have some ground to make up, tee hee hee!)

i have absolutely no idea what this particular survey is designed to elicit.
are there distinct factions within the church who say "i hold to a. only/ b. only/ c. only etc and everyone else is wrong. what are these factions called. are there fancy names for them?

9/11 / dwayne said
"I believe, rather in salvation by obedience to the commandments of Christ,"

still not salvation by grace through faith, still heresy, still returning to vain works

Galatians 2:21
I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.
Galatians 2:16
Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. Galatians 3:3 Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?Galatians 3:6 Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.Galatians 5:1 Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage. Galatians 5:4 Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace.

hello yamil,

surprised you get to read at all, or do you sit and type your mass posts into a word doc and then cut and paste.

i have to confess i have got tired following your daily rant against the doctrines of grace. i have no desire to even engage with you on that issue.

i am also tired reading jd's daily rant on eschatology. i have even less desire to engage him either.

i suppose you could call it victory to you and jd by default, or perhaps death by spam......

but to borrow a phrase, thats the way the cookie has crumbled in the fanciful land of the yamil.

anyway, blessings to you and yours.
i did view your blog. your children are little darlings (nearly as cute as mine!!!)

the irony of it, that you should quote about someone with another gospel, and yet not see that thats precisely what you are guilty of, oh purveyor of salvation by works, not faith.

see you are still on your hobby horse.

have you nothing as a non reformed christian to say to 9/11 or her alter ego dwayne regarding their salvation by works doctrine, or is that ghastly teaching your take on things too?

Romans 3:22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:
Romans 3:25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;
Romans 3:26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

Romans 4:6 Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works,

away with your heresy. away, i say, away.

try an rc website chatroom. you'll fit in quite well there.

tell you what dwayne,

we'll see how you fair clothed in your own good works and not the righteousness of Christ on the judgment day. (i wouldn't like to be you.)

this claim to sinless perfection by you must make you either deluded or extremely bad. we are taught that the heart is decetful above all things, but i've never yet met anyone who claims that being born again means we no longer sin at all.

before you accuse me of telling others that there is security for those who live a life of disobedience, i say no such thing. no one living a life of wilful disobedience can have comfort, but to deny that we are sinless is to deceive ourselves.

there has only ever been One tempted in all points like us yet without sin. and its not you, dwayne! i trust Him to forgive my iniquity, to clothe me in His righteousness, to progressively sanctify me and present me spotless at that time appointed.

as to commending your fellow heretic 9/11 and other pseuds

also jd and db recently identified her as cheryl (presumably OC, arminian, kjvo, baptist etc., etc. and sola scriptura)
I have yet to see a denial.

i'm rapidly coming to the conclusion that you are both jesuits.

9/11 and other pseuds,
your dispute is not with me, but with what the scriptures teach.

the scriptures do not teach fatalism. i am not a fatalist.

however the scriptures do clearly teach that God is sovereign over sinful men and over kings and nations. He governs all things.

if you read the old testament prophecies carefully you would see that God raised up Kings and nations to be the instruments of His judgment against His people, something that those men were oblivious to.

just because sinners are oblivious to God's overruling does not make it any less true

perhaps God will yet teach you these truths. yet i hope that in the stubbornness that you have shown that it will not be through suffering as it was with nebuchadnezzar, who at the end of those days had learned and confessed
Daniel 4:35
And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?

to believe in the sovereignty of God is not to deny the responsibility and accountability of man for his own sin. God is not the author of sin.

i suggest that you stop hiding behind your conspiracy theories and seek a true understanding of God & man
