Plain Old Tim...

How could it be to late to ask God to save you then? He already had? Like you were saved and didn’t realize it yet?

In a sinners prayer, you put your trust in Jesus. It’s no different than what you did when you prayed for God to save you. I’m more than confident in my salvation in Christ because I know when I prayed to Him it was for the right reasons and He was faithful and just to forgive me of my sins. I get your concern somewhat because I have known people who swore they were saved because they prayed to Jesus but then they were living like Hell without any kind of remorse.

Although I don’t believe it happen exactly as you say, congrats! It’s not like it was to late to ask God to save you because you were already saved. That is some dogma you learned later.

I was saved around the same time as you, in 1978. I was living in Wisconsin and my parents were divorced. My mom didn’t attend church, although she was raised Catholic and I was christened as a baby. My dad became a member of a church after the divorce and when he had visitation rights would take me to church. It was there I would hear the preaching of the gospel and became convicted of my sins. I responded to an alter call where they asked me if I knew I was a sinner and led me in a sinners prayer. From that moment Jesus came into my heart and has lived in me ever since. When my dad moved down to Atlanta though I no longer had a means to go to church anymore. My mom eventually found someone else and shipped me off to my dad in Atlanta, but by that time he stopped going to church. So long story short, I started attending church again when I was in the military.

Yes

He has no clue...

“so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭12:5‬ ‭

It’s the lowest cardinal number. That means there can’t be two or more. For instance:

“There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.”
‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭4:4-6‬

There is one body of believers, not two or more. One Spirit, not two or more. One baptism, not two or more.

Plain Old Tim...

I am getting to it. It’s Thanksgiving for crying out loud, give me a minute!

Christopher000....

It’s not to complicated at all.

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
‭‭John‬ ‭3:16‬ ‭

“He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.”
‭‭Mark‬ ‭16:16‬

Plain Old...

Lead by example and give me your testimony first.

John UK...

I never considered that my testimony. Jump to conclusions much?

How could the Apostles possibly be saved if they had not yet received the propitiation for their sins?

“But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭8:9‬

If anyone doesn’t have the Spirit they are not His.

“He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.”
‭‭I John‬ ‭5:12‬

They were not yet given the baptism with the Holy Spirit so they did not yet have eternal life.

“And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.”
‭‭I John‬ ‭5:11‬

Eternal life is in the Son and the Disciples were not yet placed in Christ by the Holy Spirit until they were baptized.

Are you trying to play some kind of translation game with me? Holy Spirit, Holy Ghost, what’s the difference? The Apostles not only received power but also were placed into the body of Christ at Pentecost? What, you think they were filled with power but were not placed into the body of Christ? So they remained unsaved?!

“But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭8:9‬

That would have been akward to have a bunch of believers indwelt with power from God but yet not belonging to Christ in any sort of way trying to tell people how to be saved yet not saved themselves.

I believe the Holy Spirit is God, so I don’t believe He is an element or energy, if that is what you are thinking.

A visible sign of inward grace should be how you live for Christ and not a dunking in a pool of water. Heck, most people dunk in water or get a sprinkling every day.

“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭28:19-20‬

Notice how baptism is different from those things which are to be observed? They were told to baptize and then teach people to observe all that Jesus commanded.

No need for you to get confused. All of those quotes are about the baptism of the Holy Spirit. No mode to worry about. Jesus is the one who baptizes in the Holy Spirit, except in the early church when He commanded the Apostles to do so by laying on of hands. 1 Corinthians 12:13 is about the baptism of the Spirit. It coencides with the rest of scripture.

“For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body— whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and have all been made to drink into one Spirit.”
‭‭I Corinthians‬ ‭12:13‬

“For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.”
‭‭Galatians‬ ‭3:26-29‬

I’m sure you had a point!

So where my righteousness depends on Christ alone and my future resurrection is dependent on the fact that Jesus was raised first, you seem to think you are clean and without need of a Savior anymore because Jesus suffered for all of your sins individually, thereby paying them off in some way? You will in fact be raised because you are good enough on your own now? I’m not buying it bro.

“I indeed baptized you with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.””
‭‭Mark‬ ‭1:8‬

“I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’”
‭‭John‬ ‭1:33‬

My Bible says He will baptize with the Holy Spirit, not water. Oh no, maybe I have a bad translation!

“There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.”
‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭4:4-6‬

Now kiddies, how many is one?

Yeah, imagine there are still people like me who believe in salvation by faith alone and not by creed, works, or church affiliation?! And believes Jesus is the propitiation for the sins of the whole world because God loves the world?! Crazy!

Plain Old Tim...

“Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, “See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?” Then Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.” And he answered and said, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.””
‭‭Acts‬ ‭8:36-37‬

I believe the Ethiopian Eunuch was the first Gentile convert to Christianity which would have meant to them he needed a mikveh or proselyte baptism. The verses just says he wanted to be baptized in water and doesn’t say for what reason.

Ha, you guys! Accusing me of changing the meaning of text and not understanding the Bible! Those who change the meaning of the word world in John 3:16 because it doesn’t suit them or whole world in 1 John 2:2 because it can’t possibly be right, lol. What, if I am not a Calvinist or Presbyterian I cannot be saved?! How silly. I was saved at a young age at a IFB church my dad attended up in Wisconsin. That’s got to count for something, right Old Tim? Maybe I am only half saved because I went to a KJV only church but I am not a Calvinist. Then again I always thought it was about faith in Jesus. Silly me!

Both cannot be right...

“When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭19:5-6‬

The baptism isn’t any different. It states that the 12 were baptized and then explains how. Paul laid his hands on them and the Holy Spirit came upon them. This is another example of the Holy Spirit being given by the laying on of hands by an Apostles. So don’t believe me, believe God!

John UK...

I tried to honestly discuss propitiation with you but am afraid the verse I quoted didn’t suit your doctrine so you just ignored it.

Here’s a few verses about it:

“And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.”
‭‭1 John‬ ‭2:2‬

“Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.”
‭‭1 John‬ ‭4:10‬

“Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭3:25‬

The common theme in all of these verses is that Jesus is the propitiation for our sins. Not His death, but He Himself

Humans is kind of evolutionary isn’t it? At any rate Jesus commanded people, who were the Apostles, to baptize. Have you not heard how they laid their hands on folks so that they would be baptized in the Holy Spirit?

The Westminster Confession is not the Bible. It calls baptism a sacrament, wrong. Says Jesus ordained water baptism, wrong. Says it is a sign, wrong. I could go on and on, but at some point for ithe wcf to be true it must be Biblical and it is not in this case. There are a lot of bones in it. Be careful you don’t choke on them!

John 3:5 is true but it is highly questionable that it would be talking about Christian water baptism as you believe because it had not yet existed. It was still during John’s ministry so could have meant his baptism , but was probably referring to birth in the flesh in addition to being born again of the Holy Spirit.

Plain Old Tim...

If you are still out there. When Jesus gave The Great Commission, people assume He meant with water probably because that’s what they were taught it meant or because that is how John the Baptist baptized. Some I think even think it is the same baptism as John’s. It is not. Jesus referred to John’s baptism in the past tense after he died. It was through. There is no instruction on how to baptize in water or to do it in some kind of remembrance of Jesus. That is because water baptism was to end. There is one Lord, one baptism. John said Jesus would come after him baptizing with water and baptize instead with the Holy Spirit, which Jesus now does upon faith. However, for whatever His reason early on in the church, Jesus commanded the Apostles to do baptize. As is mentioned in a few places, they would lay their hands on people and baptize them in the Holy Spirit.

Plain Old Tim...

The streaming services help, but are not the same as regular church attendance.

I think the Bible teaches that baptism saves, but what does scripture say baptism is? There was John’s Baptism in water which was symbolic of sins being washed away and pointed toward Jesus, but I believe ended with his ministry. Then there is the baptism in the Holy Spirit which unites us with Christ and brings us into the body of Christ making. So the Bible says there is only one baptism. I don’t believe it is John’s Baptism which has ended, but rather the baptism in the Holy Spirit and only the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Although, out of respect and not seeing the harm in it, I allowed my middle child to be baptized in water at FBCW.

You did it so I will too! I know that isn’t very Christian of me and multiple post is frowned upon. I just wanted to point out that the Holy Spirit was given by the disciples through the laying on of hands.

Also, I left a IFB church to join the SBC I now belong to. It was an attempt of getting my wife to stay in church because of our situation with my disabled son. Say what you will, but First Baptist Church of Woodstock has an excellent ministry for parents with disabled kids so that they can drop off their children and still attend church. Alas, he was to much for even them to handle so she has been staying home taking care of my son and watches the services live on her phone while me and my other two go. It’s definitely not ideal but I am grateful for what they do for the disabled community. Much more than some IFB churches I know! Though I prefer the preaching and setting of an IFB church in general. The IFB seemed very clickish also. Like if you were raised in a Christian home and went to Bob Jones University you fit right in and if you weren’t or didn’t, not so much. Not saying SBC doesn’t have some similar stuff going on either. No place is perfect.

Plain Old Tim...

Or should I call you Dr. Harsh? Let me address the text and some of your misconceptions first.

As you point out, a disciple is a follower. However, people first decide to follow Jesus before they learn to observe all that He has commanded us. Discipleship is a process which starts with trusting in Christ.

1) Go
2) Preach to make disciples
3) Baptize
4) Teach

You have people saved before baptism which is wrong.

“He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.”
‭‭Mark‬ ‭16:16‬

You can’t be saved unless you have been baptized into Christ. In fact, you don’t belong to God if you haven’t been baptized.

“But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭8:9‬ ‭

Now the question of whether the disciples of Christ ever could baptize.

“Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost. And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money, Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost. But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because t

There are countless translations out these days, I’m sure he can find an incorrect one that suites him!

As soon as a sinner hears the preaching of the gospel and decides to follow Christ, they are baptized into the body of Christ and saved.

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”
‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭5:17‬ ‭
