Read the whole chapter. You will find that the overwhelming emphasis and the main point is that the sinner was once separated from God but through the blood of Christ he was reconciled to Him.

I like to keep it simple. When death is used metaphorically, it means "separation."

physical death= separation from body and soul
spiritual death= separation from God
Eternal death= eternal separation from God.
