The letter of James says that true religion has nothing to do with theology, but rather acts of service (visit the widows and orphans). A famous theologian (Karl Barth, I think) said theology is summed up in the children's song, "Jesus Loves Me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so." I think that the institutional church, like an institution has one ground rule--to ensure its continued existence. So it uses all kinds of programs that its leaders think are important so people feel they are getting something from attending weekly services, giving money (half of which goes to pay the staff), and volunteering to usher, collect offerings, etc. Mark 4:26-27 speaks of the kingdom of God growing like seed does, without any effort or plans or programs that so many people believe in today. I even think that we have become so full of ourselves that we tell each other the correct way to understand the Bible, which commentaries are best, and so on. I thought the Holy Spirit was given to us 'to guide us into all truth' |

Yes, the nation is full of sinners. I haven't found anyone yet who is not one. Trump is just another one, as is the Clinton couple. So we get to choose which one we like to lead the country for the next 4 years. Do we want to continue with Obama's plan, or change? Many Republicans want Trump to step down, yet, if the press used the same level of analysis of years and years of comments made by them, they would not look so clean either. It goes to show you that some people favor their party more than the bigger issues at stake. Have you noticed the press is not asking about Hillary's missing emails, the Benghazi episode, and many others in her past. Now they say, don't bring up Slick Willy in the debates--as if they are in charge of what you can say in this country! |

This story relates well to the other one about Americans not knowing theology because I would imagine that the people attending this judge's Sunday school class are not there to learn anything about theology, but just to be close to a powerful individual, who might be able to help them out when their still in the shed is discovered by Andy Taylor and Barney Fife of the Sheriff's Department. And I would imagine not a few people like to sit in that church close to his pew to shake his hand for the same reason. So, one moral of the story is to not trust in any statistics showing the percentage of Americans who attend a religious service weekly (which has to include cults like Mormons, Jehovah Witnesses, and then other religions like Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, Zoroastrianism, etc). |
