Too bad this study doesn’t include trusting God. That would make it even more interesting.

Sorry for the jumbled order of my response , I am unable to write one long answer, SA apparently doesn’t allow it.

I the Amish way is not possible for everyone, nor even the only way to live. But what is universal are the commands and principles found in Scripture. Even if you don’t agree with much of what we believe and do, It would be wise I think to at least study to understand why we retain most of our youth, have no divorce, no fornication, no drug addictions, obedient respectful children. Again are there exception? Unfortunately yes, we’re not in heaven yet, but we work hard to show the world Jesus by our example. God help us.

To answer your questions:
1. Secluded? Often but not always. Mission work can be a point of contention where the most traditional churches feel helping their next door neighbors is good enough, others are very concerned for the lost. They pray for the lost, give money to foreign mission work and will take a week or two off from work to help in various mission projects. I would be glad to give a list of mission organizations where Amish are involved in.
2. Is it a sin to forgo modern conveniences? We have learned that hard work is good for the soul and builds character. We pity youth that haven’t learned to work. Laziness is a curse and can haunt a person all their life. Farming is declining do to high land prices and shortages. Other occupations are now increasing. Believe it or not some Amish do use electricity, but not for vain pursuits.
3. God warns us many times of falling away. We take those warning seriously and try to live soberly and watchful (1Peter5:8). We need God’s grace for salvation, the humble will receive it (1Peter5:5). Since when is God obligated to save anyone? He knows His sheep and they follow Him.

Youth in Asia from Asia writes:
Those are good points, and apply to many churches around the world.

Maybe you can make this clear Amish... But the stereotype of your group is that
1. You are secluded and do zero mission work
2. You live on farms with no electricity and no cars, and no washing machines.
3. You believe you can lose your salvation

Any of that true?

I appreciate the questions.
Let me first just say that there are a lot misconceptions (yes stereotypes) that exist thanks to romance books, videos, and even former Amish who were under church discipline, or yes, treated very unfairly by their church, were deeply hurt and then did all they could to represent the Amish in the worst light possible. That is not fair to other churches. My own experience has been nothing but good.

Carl haydock from England writes:
I'm not Catholic but you can't be LGBT Catholic. It's disturbing how many churches and so-called Christians are accepting the lifestyle choice.

I would like to respond to your comment Carl Haydock from yesterday if I may.

Not all of us Amish are ignorant of what is going on in the world. Some are well versed in history and are living a intentional life of godliness and separation from the world and making every attempt to obey all of Scripture such that now we are the ones who look like oddballs. What we notice is a slow process over many years of Christians departing from the clear teachings of Scripture. Accepting the LGBT lifestyle is merely the most recent compromise.

What do I mean? I will try to make a short list of compromises that I (and others) have noticed within churches.
1. Years ago Christians deemed it unnecessary for women to cover their heads anymore according to first Corinthians 11.
2. Years ago Christians deemed it unnecessary to obey the sermon on the mount given to us by our Lord.
3. Christians are no longer known for loving their enemies.
4. Swearing oaths is common among Christians.
5. It seems that when the television came into Christian homes years ago that adultery and divorce quickly increased. Tod

6. Modesty among Christians seems to be wearing anything you please as long as you’re not completely naked.
7. Keeping oneself pure until marriage is old fashion now. Fornication is surprisingly common among Christians today.
8. They say Bible reading and church attendance is at an all time low among Christians and biblical illiteracy is high.
9. What happened to respect for authority? In the home, in the church and toward our government.

I’ll stop there, the list is already longer than I expected. No doubt this list will upset Christians, even here on SA. But I would be glad to give Scripture references for each subject on that list.

I want to make it clear that I am not perfect and that the Amish churches have their own set of problems, many in fact are not following Christ but merely tradition. But the world needs to see again Christians who not only say they believe the Bible but also do what it says even if it means looking and acting different. God help us.

Thank you for pointing that out Quiet Christian. Yes we fail, although we strive for perfection we need the humility to admit to others that we are not perfect. This is where a good church can help. I may be weak in one area and my children know it. But they will also see that another Dad in our church is very strong in that same area so then my children know it is possible to be consistent in that area, and they will also have a better example to follow. This is true in reverse too. I may be a better example in a different area where another dad is weak, but his children are encouraged by my good example. We need each other.

We have a saying, “more is caught than taught”, which is a different way of saying, “actions speak louder than words”.

God saw virtue in Abraham to raise up godly seed after him. God wants us to join Him by doing our part in raising godly children in our generation. Nevertheless when we raise faithful godly children we give God all the glory.

Of course the decision has to be individually made. But it’s much easier to follow the faith of our parents when we see them living out happily and daily the faith that they profess. Children are quick to notice any inconsistency. Too many inconsistencies in their parents or in their church and who can blame them for looking for a different church or none at all.

A strong close knit church can help where parents fail their children, though not always. I have been amazed at how that can work.

Thank you Quiet Christian for that verse reminder. That is why we must keep our hearts with all diligence for out of it are the issues of life (Proverbs 4:23). And we must take care not to set wicked things before our eyes which could cause us to stumble (Psalm 101:3).

We don’t have a television or even a radio for that matter, but I am told that the airwaves today are filled with profanity, nakedness and vanity. I don’t understand why responsible Christian parents would pay money to bring these things right into their own homes to desensitize their children of all this wickedness. And all in the name entertainment. I am honestly speechless. I suppose one reason would that parents themselves and their pastors are also desensitized and have been for a long time. Having said that I fear the internet is possibly the worst of all, but it does allow for filtering and accountability.

John UK, thank you for your kind response. The only thing that I might say in reply would be these four verses in Titus:
Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men. Titus 3:5-8

To John UK:
The primary confession of faith of Amish churches is the Dordrecht Confession of Faith. It was written in 1632 in the Netherlands.
PLEASE NOTE that great care is taken to let scripture speak for itself. Therefore more scripture is quoted rather than giving a long theological explanation of what it means or supposedly means.

The earliest confession was written in 1527 in Schleitheim Switzerland by Michael Sattler, he did not live long after that as the Catholic Church tortured and killed him in a terribly gruel way for his faith.

We believe that repentance is necessary and will be shown by a changed life, that is fruit (Luke 3:8).
We strongly believe and teach in the new birth of the believer:
Colossians 3:9, 10 — Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him.
But, on the contrary, we must go to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith”, and believe in Jesus Christ, as the Scriptures speak and testify of Him. Through which faith we obtain the pardon of our sins, become sanctified, Justified, and children of God; yea, partakers of His mind, nature, and image, as we are born again of God through His incorruptible

I should quickly add that I don’t want to judge all those that leave, some do leave with sincerely held differences.

JOHN UK you make some good points. I have given this subject a lot of thought especially because all of our women and girls still wear a covering but they are often ridiculed or challenged about it. Our churches are slow to make changes and especially so when there is a clear scriptural basis for a practice. I must say most of our wives and daughters find it a blessing and honor their “heads” with willing glad hearts. Of course there are those who leave our churches having loved this present world and it’s ways instead.
Church membership is completely voluntary, but those who want to be a part of our Gemeinde (Fellowship) are expected to conform their lives to what each brotherhood has agreed upon. This method has worked quite well for us but of course it isn’t perfect either. All of our practices are intended to be based on Scriptural teaching and principles.
I felt I needed to clarify this since so often we are accused of being legalists whenever we try to actually do what is taught in the Bible. We understand that salvation cannot be earned, but that it is a gift from God.

In Isaiah 6 and Ezekiel 1 we read of angels covering themselves. Moses veiled the glory of his face after being in God’s presence .Men and women cover the glory of their bodies. Even God’s glory is presently covered. For example, very few people in His day recognized Jesus as the glorious Son of God. We are called to humility, God Himself setting the example. The day will come when these glories will be reveal. Even so godly women veil their glory until that day. Apparently this provides an example for the angels to follow. That is both a veiled glory and a sign of willing submission to their “head”.

I suppose it’s a good practice to display biblical mottos. But we better not forget that we Christians should be walking mottos. A consistent Christian life will speak louder than words. Do we live out all that the New Testament instructs us to do?
Just one small example is being careful to practice 1 Tim. 2:11-14, but then completely ignoring 1 Cor. 11:4,5.

From what I understand this sin is not limited to just the Catholic church. I remember reading quite some time ago about a youth pastor attempting to entice a teen aged girl. She was so troubled by the incident she left the church.
With these kinds of things happening in many churches why are people surprised over the decline in attendance?
I visited a Evangelical church once because a especially good evangelist from another country was to speak. What stood out to me more than anything was the poor attendance. Also there were hardly any youth there at all. I thought to myself, this church has no future.

Occasionally I go to the Salvation Army thrift store in search of a good used shirt. My wife never goes as her dresses are home sewn. The music playing there is always ungodly. I guess at one time it was a Christian organization, but it’s hard to tell anymore.
