Can anyone be save, and that would be from the wrath of God apart from justification?
No. But that does not make salvation and justification the same and that was my point.

No, Salvation is by faith AND Works. Our Lord makes this very clear in many parables.
The survey question speak to justification not salvation. Just trying to be helpful because there is a difference in the two biblical terms.

I can't speak for the strict literalist but when I want to comprehend the sense of a passage like you quoted I usually do a little Berean burrowing by means of a word or phrase search and read a number of similar instances in context. The following is a good example...

He teareth in his wrath, who hateth me: he gnasheth upon me with his teeth; mine enemy sharpeneth his eyes upon me. They have gaped upon me with their mouth; they have smitten me upon the cheek reproachfully; they have gathered themselves together against me. God hath delivered me to the ungodly, and turned me over into the hands of the wicked. (Job 16:9-11)

It seems to me that such expressions represent the reactions of the ungodly children of Satan who in the bitterness of their ungodly familiar spirit react angrily when presented with the Truth and their vile heart has been convinced of sin. Their eternal fate is then sealed and the wrath of God abides on them until the day of judgment because they received not the love of the Truth that they might be saved.

IMHO they didn't literally bite or chew on Stephen but that is just my view and I could be mistaken so I will defer to a literalist.

I'd venture to say that being utterly "destroyed from among the people" should they "not hear that Prophet [Jesus Christ]" IS certainly tantamount to losing covenant blessing!
Casob asked: "Well, did he mean it or not? Where were they destroyed?"

Hbr 4:12 For the word of God [is] quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and [is] a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

2Cr 2:15 For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish: To the one [we are] the savour of death unto death; and to the other the savour of life unto life. And who [is] sufficient for these things? For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ. (2 Cor 2:15-17)

The problem with an absurdly literal hermeneutic is that spiritual realities escape unnoticed.

Good luck DJC49.... I'm away for the day.

We have not been commenting on Deut, we have been commenting on Acts.

Correction. YOU have been commenting on Acts with blinders on forcing it to conform to your theology. Yet Peter quoted Deut 18:15 so the context in Deuteronomy is imperative to understanding the Acts passage.

I gave the passage which is the fulfillment of God's promised Prophet raised up from amongst the circumcisions' brethren (Matt 17:1-5) yet you won't believe it. A closed mind has ceased to learn.

DJC49,

It's too bad the context of Deut 18:15-22 doesn't point to the second coming as Casob seem to think Acts 3:18-21 demands v 22-23 be interpreted. Nope... it just isn't there.

The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; UNTO HIM SHALL YE HEARKEN. (Deut 18:15)

And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart, And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light. And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him. Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias. While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; HEAR YE HIM. (Matt 17:1-5)

And I can not tell you how silly and frightened you will be when you present yourself at the judgment and try to defend the utter foolishness that you men put forth here. I am warning you not to show up before God to answer for such claims. It will not bode well for you! Beware!
All will be judged by the Word He spoke (John 12:48 cf (for God to show you if He so wills)). Of course I already know where I stand because He has written His Word on my heart.

While I suppose empty warnings and vain rhetoric might impress some of the viewers they do nothing but stimulate a from the rest of us.

The Truth is sufficient needing no embellishment. Give it a rest.

Murray,

Thanks for your post. As I said in my first post; at present time there are personal reasons that prevent me from actively contributing to this discussion but I wanted to acknowledge your reply with appreciation.

Blessings.

Murray,

In light of your comments what is your take (or anyone for that matter) on this verse from Paul.

Rom 16:20 And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.

In other words do you feel comfortable placing this event which Paul said would happen shortly alongside some other scripture and saying it happened (or will happen) then.

MurrayA, Preacher, Rogerant, et al,

I opened up this survey which seems appropriate so the current discussion could continue here. I won't be able to contribute much if at all but would enjoy seeing the views of others who want to contribute to reasoned and civil discussion.

Regarding the survey question I voted "My end time views don't fit any of these choices." because I can't reconcile any of the four leading methods of prophetic interpretation with the whole of scripture.

Excellent suggestion, MurrayA. Count me in for the ignoring Casob part but understand that at present time my ability to discuss with likeminded brethren is limited for personal reasons.

Anybody else?

Rom 2:23-25 Thou that makest thy boast of the law, through breaking the law dishonourest thou God? For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles through you, as it is written.

For circumcision verily profiteth, if thou keep the law: but if thou be a breaker of the law....

...thy circumcision is made ***uncircumcision***.

What are the uncircumcision called, Casob?

It was not I who brought this up as a proof text, it was the fellow who calls himself preacher. I have asked him to prove what he said from the text but he has done nothing but rufused.
Prove? No one, not even Holy Spirit inspired scripture, can prove anything to you that you WILL NOT believe and this you prove time and time again. Demanding proof is a neat trick of yours but, in the end, to your shame.

You are the one who has ridiculed everyone else for interpreting this passage exactly as the context demands it be interpreted and yet you refuse to take the same passage and show how everyone is wrong. It should be easy if you are right. This is not the methods of serious discussion but a mockery of Truth. You are intentionally being evasive in the extreme and abusive without a cause and I don't know why anyone bothers with you in this "discussion" or any other.

I will outline this chapter so you can see the main points if you ask me to. I am your servant!
I have been following this "discussion" for a few days in amazement. Instead of outlineing this chapter why don't you provide an exegesis of Rom 2:28-29 in light of it's immediate context? If everyone is wrong about Paul's intent to assign a spiritual value to the definition of a Jew in God's sight which is consistent throughout the NT writings surely a proper exegesis of the passage in light of its immediate context will establish your refusal to accept this definition.

To insist this passage doesn't mean what it says but means this or that with no scriptural warrant is a waste of time and makes you guilty of what you charge everyone else of; forcing this passage to conform to your "preconceived ideas".
