A word in season from a God-fearing, God-loving man . .

"Throughout the Bible, God’s law and His grace are interwoven. They are not at odds, as some think.
The Bible reveals how God thinks. It contains laws that God gave “for your good” (Deut. 10:13 ; Rom. 7:12 ). They are beneficial family rules that show us how to love God the way He wants to be loved and how to love fellow human beings in the way that promotes the greatest peace and happiness.

However, the truth is that no human being, except Jesus Christ, has perfectly obeyed God’s laws.
We are all sinners in Adam, and our sins put us at enmity with God. God's perfect righteousness can’t coexist with the vile corruption of sin.

God’s grace—His love and mercy and all of His generous gifts—makes reconciliation possible.

We are saved “for” good works, not “by” good works (Ephesians 2:10).

Grace does not remove the beneficial laws but, through Christ’s sacrifice, pays the penalty of sin.
It is not a case of law vs. grace. God’s revelation is that law and grace work together."

"I had not known sin, but by the law."
- Rom. 7:7

"Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just and good."
- Rom. 7:12

Sinners are saved by grace in Christ, but not called to be lawless.

B.McCausland in response to US . .
The distinction between moral and sacrificial law can also be traced in this statement, and many others like it in the OT and NT
"I desired mercy, and not sacrifice;
and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings" Hs 6:6
Mercy is about moral value, sacrifice speaks about the means of appeasing God.
The knowledge of God is the moral value, burnt offerings the type of justification
Preference is placed on the things that endure
BTW, the distinctions you talk about derive from a proper understanding of the revealed truth as a whole
-----------
You have answered well. You have spoken the “truth in love” Eph. 4:15 and have borne a faithful witness. What harmony there is in the Scripture as your remarks once again attest. God does not speak out of both sides of his mouth.

Christ's words agree with the Father's . . "For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him." John 3:34
Once again, I thank you for your studied contributions to this discussion. It is evident that you are very well-taught of God John 6:45
"Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual." 1 Cor.2:13

Jim,
In the excerpt you posted, Chafer distorts the Reformer's concept of the church.

As Chafer says, for Rome the church is the physical '.. kingdom for earthly power and dominion appointed to conquer the world by bringing it under its authority'.
However, the Reformers viewed the church as a *spiritual* kingdom fulfilling the Davidic covenant.

Hence to affirm that at the Reformation the Reformers held to the same concept as Rome is a misrepresentation of the actual truth
----------
B,McCausland . .

you are correct . . This idea of an earthly kingdom is the invention of Roman Catholicism and is central to Catholic theology.

The RC "church" has on some level at least managed to set up an earthly kingdom, but it is not the kingdom of our Lord & Saviour Jesus Christ, a kingdom which is not by observation.
Luke 17:20-21

Christ, the King of Kings reigns in the hearts of His people, while the pope rules from his seat of power in the Vatican over Catholics through papal encyclicals and proclamations.

The Reformers espoused no such theology.

Thanks for setting that straight

Penn . . Thanks for sharing the related Spurgeon commentary . .
MORE from . . "Pepetuity of the Law of God" by C. H. Spurgeon
I can only say that the supposed adaptation is no more adapted to us than the original law. If there could be conceived to be any difference in difficulty it might be easier to keep the ten than the two; for if we go no deeper than tile letter, the two are the more exacting, since they deal with the heart, and soul, and mind. The ten commands mean all that the two express; but if we forget this, and only look at the wording of them, I say, it is harder for a man to love God with all his heart, with all his soul, with all his mind, and with all his strength, and his neighbor as himself than it would be merely to abstain from killing, stealing, and false witness. Christ has not, therefore, abrogated or at all moderated the law to meet our helplessness; he has left it in all its sublime perfection, as it always must be left, and he has pointed out how deep are its foundations, how elevated are its heights, how measureless are its length and breadth. Like the laws of the Medes and Persians, God’s commands cannot be altered; we are saved by another method.

From the Article: Pepetuity of the Law of God,

Our Lord Jesus Christ, in addition to explaining the law and pointing out its spiritual character, also unveiled its living essence, for when one asked him “Which is the great commandment in the law?” he said, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it; Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.” In other words, he has told us, “All the law is fulfilled in this: thou shalt love.” There is the pith and marrow of it. Does any man say to me, “You see, then, instead of the ten commandments we have received the two commandments, and these are much easier.” I answer that this reading of the law is not in the least easier. Such a remark implies a want of thought and experience. Those two precepts comprehend the ten at their fullest extent, and cannot be regarded as the erasure of a jot or tittle of them. Whatever difficulties surround the ten commands are equally found in the two, which are their sum and substance. If you love God with all your heart you must keep the first table; and if you love your neighbor as yourself you must keep the second table.

B.McCausland,

I truly appreciate the contributions you

have made to this discussion.

Once again, you have spoken the "truth in

love." - Eph. 4:15

You have borne a faithful witness.

I have found your comments most helpful

in bringing clarity to this discussion.

You are very focused; very well-spoken

and your last comment very precisely

and concisely goes to the root problem,

namely . . a flawed theology cloaked

under a mantle of love, devoid of a

standard to judge right from wrong,

and that which is rightly exposed

as a "false gospel" in the article

shared by "inthypaths"

entitled: C. Hetherington in 'New Covenant Theology - A False Gospel'

Posting again for the edification of those following this thread.

"But we know that the Law is good, if a man use it lawfully" (1 Tim. 1:8)

A. W. Pink:
"To use the Law lawfully is to regard it as the unchanging expression of the will of God, and therefore to "delight" in it. To use the Law lawfully is to receive it as the corrector of our conduct. To use the Law lawfully is to "fulfill" it in love."

" ... without the Moral Law of God, there can be absolutely no basis, warrant, or authority for defining what sin is. Neither can there be a measuring of what holiness, sanctification, and righteous standards are."

B.McCausland . . you have "spoken the truth in love" - Eph. 4:15

Those who have fallen prey to a flawed theology cloaked under a mantle of love that brazenly ignores sin and ultimately seeks to eliminate any distinction between good or evil, right or wrong, true or false have embraced a lie and have been horribly deceived.

Very tragic.

Thanks for sharing the article: New Covenant Theology - A False Gospel By Pastor Chalan Hetherington

The closing paragraphs summarize these matters most concisely and precisely:
Unlike any other of the Ceremonial or Mosiac Judicial Laws it is surely very striking and noteworthy that the Ten Commandments were placed in the Ark of the Covenant, and written by the finger of God, and spoken by the voice of God Himself from heaven. Thus confirming their perpetuity!
If our Lord “delighted in the Law” and if Christ’s Spirit is in us, (Romans 8:9) surely this will be our desire also. Paul  says in in Romans 7:22 “For I delight in the law of God after the inward man”.
Romans 3:31 ‘Do we then make void the Law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the Law’.
I close with the words of Samuel Bolton (1601-1654) “The Law sends us to the Gospel for our justification; the Gospel sends us to the Law to frame our way of life”.
“If Christ has freed us from the penalties, how ought we to subject ourselves to the precepts! If He has delivered us from the curses, how ought we to study the commands! If He paid our debt of sin, certainly we owe a debt of service.”

How tragic that in our day, there is so great a . .
“famine of hearing the word of the LORD.”
Hosea 8:1

Lurker . . let me just add . .

Pastor Pickett is a most gifted instructor in Christ who lifts Christ up on the gospel pole and commends him to sinners as the only way of salvation. He commends the reading and meditation of God's Word to the Lord's people and the need for a personal relationship with Him that we might truly know and love Him. He exalts the person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ with a heartfelt desire for the salvation of souls and an utter dependence upon God to add the increase to his labours. He is no respecter of persons and seeks only the commendation of God. His preaching is marked by the solemnity agreeable to matters of the utmost importance . . matters that are of an eternal nature. He is a tender, warm-hearted and compassionate man who himself has suffered many afflictions of the body and knows by experience what it is to be sorely tried and tempted.
He is a man who has studied to show himself approved of God, rightly dividing the Word of God, who expounds upon the whole of Scripture, from Genesis to Revelation. His preaching is instructive, edifying, soul-searching, and deeply affecting.

For these reasons . . I esteem him very highly in love for his work's sake.

Lurker . .

PS to my comment of this AM to you . . Pastor Michael Pickett has great respect and reverence for the Word of God which he upholds as the ultimate authority in matters of faith and morals, that which God himself has declared sufficient for our salvation. 2 Tim. 3:15 He is a faithful shepherd of the flock over which Christ, the Great Shepherd has entrusted him. Heb. 13:17; 1 Pet. 5:3
As I have said . . his sermons testify to to the unimpeachable integrity of a God who changeth not Mal. 3:6, whose Word is forever settled in the heavens. Ps. 119:89 On that account, I esteem him very highly in love for his work's sake. 1 Thess. 5:13 How gracious our God is in raising up this faithful shepherd in our day, who takes the charge the Good Shepherd has given him with the greatest solemnity. He is cut from the cloth of his Master and feeds his flock with gospel truth, seeking only the welfare and well-being of the souls over which he so carefully and diligently watches. He is a man after God's own heart, who speaks out of the good treasure of his heart. Matt. 12:35

Pastor Pickett answers to this text . .
“And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding.”

More checking points from John, the beloved Apostle / disciple of the Lord

Love is not to be understood as sundered from obedience

1 John 2:5
But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.

1 John 5:2-3
By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.
For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.

2 John 1:6
And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it.

John 14:15
If ye love me, keep my commandments.

I am blessed to sit under the God-glorifying, Christ-exalting preaching of Pastor Michael Pickett,a SA member, whose ministry is marked by sound doctrine and the “wholesome words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;” 1 Tim. 6:3 Though he has no doctorate in divinity, nor did he attend seminary, yet he is a man well-taught of God (John 6:45) . . taught of the Spirit. 1 Cor. 2:13. He is a humble servant of the Lord called to preach the gospel of repentance toward God and faith in Jesus Christ. His sermons are weighty and soul-searching. He does not shun to proclaim the whole counsel of God. He impresses upon his hearers the necessity of the “new birth”, along with the evidence of same, namely a sanctified life, one marked by godliness and holiness without which no man shall see God. Titus 2:12; Heb. 12:14 Though unlearned and unlettered, like Peter & John, yet his preaching is bold & his speech clearly evinces that he has “been with Jesus.” (Acts 4:13)His sermons testify to the unimpeachable integrity of a God who changeth not Mal. 3:6, whose Word is forever settled in the heavens

Romans 3:31.
Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.

Greg L. Bahnsen, Th.M.
Since God's law defined righteousness in the Old Testament, it continues to define righteousness for us today. God has no double-standard. Whether the Christian strives to imitate the holiness of God, to model his behavior after the life of Christ, or to be led by the Spirit, he will invariably be directed by Scripture to heed the law of God; the law is a transcript of God's unchanging holiness, the standard of righteousness followed by the Savior, and the pattern of sanctification empowered by the Spirit. The continuing authority of God's law today, then, is inherent to a biblically based theology. Time does not change or wear out the validity of God's commands, and a change of geography or locality does not render them ethically irrelevant. With the coming of the New Covenant and the spreading the church throughout the world we still read in Scripture that the law of God is to be written on our hearts, and we are to disciple all nations and teach them to observe whatsoever the Lord has commanded. The Biblical doctrines of God, Christ, the Holy Spirit, and the Covenant of Grace all harmonize in pointing to the abiding validity of God's inspired law.

____
B.M. . .
Greg L. Bahnsen, Th.M., enlarges upon your words . .

"God's law is still the blueprint for sanctified behavior — this is completely unaffected by the Spirit's ethical ministry in the believer. The Holy Spirit does not oppose that law in the slightest degree but, instead, empowers obedience to it. "I will put My Spirit within.you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will be careful to observe My ordinances" (Ezekiel 36:27). Whereas the letter of the law brought death to man because he was unable of himself to comply with it, the Spirit of God enlivens men so that they can conform to God's standards (2 Cor. 3:6). Therefore the sure test of whether someone has the Spirit abiding in him or not is found in asking if he keeps the commandments of God (I John 3:24). A Biblical view of the work of the Holy Spirit reinforces the validity of God's law for the Christian, showing how the law (as pattern) and the Spirit (as power) are both indispensable to sanctification

1. The mechanics how God writes the Decalogue are identical to the mechanics by which God gives a new heart, because they both come in a pack.

Which law do you think God is speaking about here:
"I will put *my law* (towrah) in their inward parts,
and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people"
Jer 31:33

Lurker, it seems you do not appreciate the person of Christ as being God, separating His work and the work of the Holy spirit from God's.
This is why you are inclined to judge that the Decalogue is not included in the laws God puts in the heart when He gives us a new heart. Why would God have to write something else in our hearts? Has God two set of rules, opinions, or standard? The Godhead works as one in purpose. God has only one law.

Inferring that the laws written in the heart exclude the Decalogue demonstrates also wilful disrespect to what God is in essence

"All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness; That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.” (II Tim. 3:16-17)

Scripture is God-breathed
Theopneustos=God-breathed.
Scripture was breathed out by God. Inspiration refers not so much to authors but to the Word of God. While the authors were fallible and subject to error, God breathed out into their minds His infallible Word, so that what they wrote was the inerrant Word of God.

The bible is the divinely inspired word of God.

As I said, I make no claims to be a theologian, but am but a simple believer. The Holy Spirit engraves the
"word of God"
upon the soul of all those who are born again, and that includes the 10 commandments

Luke 8:21
And he answered and said unto them, My mother and my brethren are these which hear the word of God, and do it.

Luke 11:28
But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.

Luke 5:1
And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret,

Matthew 4:4
But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

Acts 13:44
And the next sabbath day came almost the whole city together to hear the word of God.

Acts 19:20
So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed.

Romans 10:17
So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

1 Thess. 2:13
For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.

-------
I make no claims to be a theologian, but am but a simple believer. The Holy Spirit engraves his Word upon the soul of all those who are born again, and that includes the 10 commandments. The answer Christ gave Nicodemus is the only answer I can give to my detractors . .
Christ said: “ye must be born again. . . born of the Spirit” John 3:3-7
Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?
Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.

“Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.” 1 Peter 1:23
