The problem with VP Pence was that he is a Catholic. It wasn't about politics.

"one of the most idotic posts to make this forum We never were going to die for anybody else's sin but our own."

Well then I guess Jesus didn't die in your place!

Jesus didn't take our place. We couldn't have died for the sins of the world like He did. It's best to think of Him as the propitiation for our sins.

John UK...

How did what Jesus accomplished at the cross result in our salvation?

Because Jesus suffered the consequences of sin by dying a death He did not deserve, being righteous. God therefore raised Him from the dead. Resulting in any who put on Christ to also become righteous and innocent of guilt.

What is the means of our salvation?

Ultimately what Jesus did in dying for our sins was and is credited to those who believed through baptism (in the Holy Spirit). It is at baptism that we are made righteous in Christ and become justified before God because it is the moment we are placed into Jesus, receiving His righteousness which is not of the law but through faith in Him.

Unprofitable Servant...

Jesus spoke these words, lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said: “Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You, as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as You have given Him. And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do.
John 17:1‭-‬4

Jesus was given authority over all flesh that He should give eternal life to as many sheep as the Father gave Him. That would include the Apostles but not limit it to just them.

John UK...

Yes, unbelievers might be saved if only they would believe.

This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe.
John 1:7

"Did Paul say, "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you might be saved," or did he say, "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved."?"

After someone already believed, they will be saved. However, prior to believing they might be saved if only they would believe.

I have obeyed the gospel call of God and believed in Jesus Christ for my salvation. I have eternal life and no one can take that away from m

Your point was the sheep and I am showing you who the sheep are.

"Was John unsure of Christ's work? No, if the whole world came to God through Christ, they would assuredly all be saved."

Correct, but seeing that they don't all believe, they are not all saved. They might have been if they believed.

Unprofitable Servant...

For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it.
Hebrews 4:2

That's why I said the words the Pharisees heard were not mixed with faith.

I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do.
John 17:4

What was that work?

“I have manifested Your name to the men whom You have given Me out of the world. They were Yours, You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word.
John 17:6

To manifest Himself to those God gave Him. They were already God's so they believed already in Him and they didn't become believers in God, but kept His word as before through the process of believing on Jesus.

For I have given to them the words which You have given Me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came forth from You; and they have believed that You sent Me.
John 17:8

Because they already believed, it was just a matter of Jesus preaching the truth and they received those words also. Knowing Jesus came from God because His words correlated with those of God, so they followed Him.

1) regardless of ethnicity you have Jesus calling those who are not yet saved, sheep. God had not granted them repentance or they would already be part of the fold.
2) Second you have our Lord talking to a group of Jews, who are obviously externally hearing His voice. He is telling them the reason they are not responding to His admonition to walk through the door that He is, is because they are not His sheep. If they were then they would have responded and followed Him. Thus it cannot be just the hearing of the external message, which is necessary, because these Jews were doing that. It must then be , conundrum number two, an internal call given by the Spirit of God to their hearts.
1) Yes, exactly! Nobody was saved yet! Jesus had not yet died, ressurected, and ascended to Heaven. So how could they be? Believers in God, who died before the cross, would die and go to Abraham's Bossom.

2) Those who believed in God the Father previously also believed in the Son who He sent. The Father gave those people to the Son because they already believed in God and then the Shepherd had to go find the lost sheep and bring them into the fold. It is because those Jews who heard didn't mix it with faith.

John UK wrote:
1) if "might" here means "there is a possibility of", then yes I would agree with you. But I believe it means "assuredly will be".

2) "There are none that seeketh after God". That is - NONE.

Romans 8:30 KJV
(30)  Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified...

3) those whom God calls (inwardly), he justifies (saves). And those he justifies, he saves eternally.
So "might receive" means "will assuredly receive".

1) You believe differently from me but who is right? I caught what Lurker said but I have to disagree for this reason. The noun form of the word might means power, authority, or strength. It doesn't fit at all. Whereas the verb means permission or possibility. It's about what words actually mean and not winging definitions, like some do with the word world.

2) None of the Israelites did at that time.

3) Looking back, believers can see God works out everything for their good by looking at how they were called, justified, etc. It doesn't exclude other people from being called.

But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “ Lord , who has believed our report?”
Romans 10:16

Others are called and won't obey the gospel.

Sounds like Jesus was a true believer in free will as far as believing is concerned! Look at what Jesus said:

they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.

So those who are called might receive eternal life or they might not. Who decides? Under the system put in place by God, men must believe in order to be saved, but it is a choice. All God does is call people so they might receive eternal life.

Unprofitable Servant...

You might as well be, you are grafted into the covenants and promises given to Israel!

You have to understand who Jesus was talking to, but it still applies to us. It's important because it is important to be accurate. Jesus was talking to Jews about those who believed in Him and those lost sheep which were going to believe in Him. The Gentiles weren't even lost sheep, how could they be? They weren't yet granted repentance.

Jesus was that Light.

I'm just saying the country of Israel exist and the reason the Palestinians seem to be in the mess they are is because of their general support for terrorism.

For Jesus to say he died for His sheep there doesn't exclude any future people He died for. The reason Jesus used future tense was because He wasn't yet through with His ministry. After He said those words Jesus went beyond the Jordan and to Bethany to raise Lazarus. He was still bringing His sheep into the fold.

These twelve Jesus sent out and commanded them, saying: “Do not go into the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter a city of the Samaritans. But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
Matthew 10:5‭-‬6

His words, not mine.

You are trying to equate believers who weren't aware that Jesus was resurrected to unbelievers who are supposedly unable to believe the gospel? Wouldn't it be better to just believe what the Bible says, that God loves the world and sent His Son to die for the sins of the world, especially to those who believe and how will they believe on Him unless the hear and how will they hear unless someone is sent to preach the gospel?

No, not like that. The cloven tongues like fire is way off and the disciples already believed. I'm sure that won't convince you to stop believing like the Mormons though!

Gentiles were lost in their sin until after Jesus ascended to Heaven. It is later that Peter had his vision about unclean meat and went and preached to Gentiles. It was then Christians realized that God granted repentance to the Gentiles also.

Jesus died for the whole world, especially for those who believe. However, Jesus was talking to Jews in John 10 about other believers He Himself was going to bring into the fold. He didn't go preach to the Gentiles, in any of their cities! He even says He wasn't sent for the Gentiles, but to the lost sheep of Israel. He helped heal a couple Gentiles after some prodding, that's it. The Gospel of John was written so that Gentiles would believe. It was written after Jesus had gone to Heaven.

Peter was already a believer in Jesus when He called him to be a Fisher of men. So how did God reveal to Peter that He was the Christ? Peter would not have known by just looking at Jesus. Peter knew from the word of God backed up by His miracles.

Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in My Father’s name, they bear witness of Me.

Jesus answered them, “Many good works I have shown you from My Father. For which of those works do you stone Me?”

If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me; but if I do, though you do not believe Me, believe the works, that you may know and believe that the Father is in Me, and I in Him.”
John 10:25‭, ‬32‭-‬32‭, ‬37‭-‬38

It's a pretty accurate description of what you believe for sure.

You do realize that Simon Peter and Andrew already knew Jesus and believed? It wasn't like they were just following a stranger. Nonetheless, it was Jesus calling and they obeyed. Just not an "effectual" calling as you claimed.

Just like Jesus did before, He sends out the preaching of His gospel. Otherwise, people would not audibly hear it and be able to believe. For how can they believe if they haven't heard? So Jesus calls many through the preaching of the Gospel and then a few who believe are elected unto eternal life. God only ordains those who believed.

You are admitting to rationalizing what you don't understand. Jesus said He calls His sheep, therefore you are reckoning it to mean an inaudible thing, like a burning in the bossom where you just kind of know. Unfortunately, for you, it doesn't say any such thing as that. If we are going to fill in wholes where none belong, you might as well say Jesus was talking about real sheep that He owned! There isn't any justification for such nonesense. Just like there isn't any for His call wasn't audible. Why do you think He went into all of the Jewish regions with the gospel message? He even brought the Twelve Apostles for help to reach all of them. It is because they could not believe unless they heard.

How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher?
Romans 10:14

Another thing taken out of context, the Jews at that time were just as bad as anyone else. They were not seeking God's will, they all went astray from what they knew to be right. That doesn't mean they could not repent and believe.

The promise of eternal life was to those there on the day of Pentecost, to their children and all who were afar off at that time. There is no limit to the call. Is there?

So who are the as many as the Lord our God will call? Everyone else that gets called also. If the promise of eternal salvation belonged to all people at that time, then it must also belong to me, my children, and all who are afar off from me now!

The gospel has gone into all of the world so if they haven't heard, they will.

But I say, have they not heard? Yes indeed: “Their sound has gone out to all the earth, And their words to the ends of the world.”
Romans 10:18

Who are the other sheep? They aren't Gentiles! You are sounding Mormon again. Is there a lost gospel where Jesus goes to the Gentiles? That's what the Book of Mormon is about! You know Satan isn't very original. He continues some of the same lies from Islam, to Calvinism, to Mormonism.

Who is left out of a calling which is to you, your children, and all who are afar off? None!

You sound like a Mormon with all of this nonbiblical inward burning of the bossom stuff.

I asked you why you called me a humanist? What, is calling on Jesus to be saved considered a work according to your philosophy?
