So he didn't accommodate the lesbian fast enough? It's not like the chaplain said they couldn't go on a retreat ever. He just said they would have to wait for a immoral chaplain to take them.

If he agreed with the scriptures, he probably wouldn't be questioning their validity. It comes across to me that he wants to portray God as loving and accepting of all lifestyles. Therefore, he has to try to get rid of any scripture which depicts lifestyles as sin.

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
II Timothy 3:16‭-‬17

Unprofitable Servant...

Not at all! The words used for consumption of alcohol, wine, beer, vodka, whatever, are distinctly different for bishops as opposed to deacons because they are held to different standards.

For a bishop must be blameless, as a steward of God, not self-willed, not quick-tempered, not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for money,
Titus 1:7

It's as clear as day that they are not to use it or have anything to do with it. Just like they aren't supposed to be violent or greedy.

exactly J4J this more proof your thinking on this passage is invalid, it is not about alcohol
Sober here has no reference to not being inebirated if you were right then a simple sip of wine would constitute not being sober
So you want to double down and say not only is it okay for a bishop to drink Mad Dog 20/20, but he can drink Jack Daniel's also?! Why have any standards for pastors anymore? Let them have their multiple marriages and drink their booze!

Should bishops stay away from wine, but whiskey, beer, and vodka is fine?!

They are made differently, but the alcohol content is similar so I will apply it to beer also. The whole point is for bishops not to use it so they can be sober minded.

From the article:

He added: "There's nothing in the Bible that says you can't drink alcohol in a responsible manner."

Beer is alcohol like wine is.

Yolanda...

I think you're right about that. The Holy Spirit has nothing to do with this "church"!

For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
Hebrews 4:12

I think the word of God is revealing the true intent of people's hearts on this subject.

not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for money, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not covetous;
I Timothy 3:3

It's funny how in all of those things only alcohol gets questioned. Nobody would say it's okay for a pastor to partake in a little violence, or that they can be kind of greedy. However, they will swear that it is okay for a bishop to drink!

If the Bible said that a bishop is not to be given to idolatry or fornication, I wonder if some people would claim that means just a little bit?

not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for money, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not covetous;
I Timothy 3:3

The phrase in verse three consists of two Greek words (me paroinos) and, literally translated, means “not beside, by, or at wine” (Vine, 1966, p. 146; Robertson, 1934, p. 613)

Likewise deacons must be reverent, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy for money,
I Timothy 3:8

the four words used to qualify deacons on this point (me oino pollo prosechontas) are literally translated “not wine much occupied with” (cf. Perschbacher, p. 352; Spain, 1970, p. 64)

So there are different words being used between the two verses because there are distinctions to be made. Bishops are to stay away from alcohol and deacons are not to use much alcohol.

Reformed Protestant...

I believe Jesus may have drank wine and that He definitely turned water into wine.

What the Bible says is that a bishop is to not be given to wine and deacons are not to be given to much wine. If that excludes some bishops from drinking in the communion then so be it. Alot of places use grape juice or the deacons can perform communion.

Titus 1:7

Here it is once again. Perhaps a little less confusing. It clearly says not given to wine. There are no caveats!

It was okay for Timothy to use wine for medicinal purposes because he was not a bishop. He was sent out, like Titus, to assign bishops from elders in the church under the authority of Paul.

For this reason I left you in Crete, that you should set in order the things that are lacking, and appoint elders in every city as I commanded you—
Titus 1:5

John UK...

Sober means one is not affected by alcohol. So when it says sober minded it means the pastor should not have his thoughts affected by alcohol. If he does that, he will be more sensible and logical.

Look at the requirements for deacons:

Likewise deacons must be reverent, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy for money,
I Timothy 3:8

See the difference? Pastors are not to be given to wine at all and deacons are not to be given to much wine.

I may not know the proper Queen's English. However, you can't be sober minded if you are drinking and if you have a drop of wine you have given yourself to it. Now as a true Calvinists who plays loose and easy with scripture, I'm sure you have no problem pretending otherwise.

How can a pastor drink beer in service?

A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, of good behavior, hospitable, able to teach; not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for money, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not covetous;
I Timothy 3:2‭-‬3

What they are doing doesn't jive with scripture! Notice the sober part and not given to wine at all.

Whoever drinks beer, he is quick to sleep; whoever sleeps long, does not sin; whoever does not sin, enters Heaven! Thus, let us drink beer!

The problem with VP Pence was that he is a Catholic. It wasn't about politics.
