“ A Sermon to Joy the Sad Heart ”
This sermon was exactly the medicine that I needed tonight. How lovely is Christ Jesus depicted here and how true!

The Lord's people must be united in truth. Otherwise the Lord sends a sword between us. And we must fight for the truth which is the word of God. And it seems we cannot agree upon it.

Satan laughs but will not win the victory as Adriel has truly written. Sincere prayers for unity in the truth are begged of every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ the righteous.

Meanwhile, a professing Christian must love those who profess Christ. So we are commanded by the Word of God. No one knows our hearts except the Lord. No one can say that we are unregenerate but him. And we must assume the best of our brethren without naivety.

Some words posted here have been cruel. We are to speak the truth in love. We are to admonish with meekness, remembering our own sins. Stay in the Word and he will keep you even to everlasting Life...

Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;

That they all may be one, as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.

And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:

I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me...

The Lord can tame a raging human. I have watched him do it. I have even experienced this myself. I am sorry for those still in rebellion against the most high and holy and powerful God who is our gentle, compassionate, and suffering Savior.

But the world will love its mammon and find ways to gather more in that appeal to the violent man. Making money off of promoting violence and hatred...hmmm...sounds very familiar, like football and gladiator games.

I hope that the worldlings like their portion for that is all they will get. Hitting your head against the wall will not get the job done.

from the Metrical Scottish psalter, 1650, Psalm 4:8:

I will both lay me down in peace,
and quiet sleep will take;
Because thou only me to dwell
in safety, Lord, dost make.

This is what I sang to my husband as he was dying of gallbladder cancer last April. It is true.

I could never understand women who profess that they love Christ Jesus smearing their faces with paint. It is deceptive. It makes a sensible connection with abortion.

Jezebel's heirs...

God created mankind in his image. He did not mess around with us and make us from some other animal. Still we sought out many inventions, and marred that image, and it appears that mankind still does seek out many inventions.

But those upon whom God bestows saving grace are being renewed to his image. According to the word of God, that image is knowledge, righteousness and true holiness with dominion over the creatures, including their own tongues. Those who believe otherwise are on their way to a very hot place.

That is right Neil. We must not copy what we saw on television, ad nauseum. I fully agree with your warning.

It is indeed God's word which defines masculinity. That said, A Christian, either man or woman, while not being childish, must be child-like in dependence upon Christ Jesus and humble in his demeanor.

We are not to rely upon the world, its mass media or its politics but upon God and his Word. He is our Prophet, our Priest, and our King.

To my own 2 cents:

That is good that you like to discuss different subjects. We often learn if we are teachable. It is the Spirit of God which makes us so.

You quote 1 Corinthians 11:15 that a woman's long hair is her head covering. Historically the Christian church did not understand the verse this way.

From Chrysostom:

"And if it be given her for a covering," say you, "wherefore need she add another covering?" That not nature only, but also her own will may have part in her acknowledgment of subjection. For that you ought to be covered nature herself by anticipation enacted a law..."

From John Calvin a sadly true prophecy:

"So if women are thus permitted to have their heads uncovered and to show their hair, they will eventually be allowed to expose their entire breasts, and they will come to make their exhibitions as if it were a tavern show; they will become so brazen that modesty and shame will be no more; in short they will forget the duty of nature...Further, we know that the world takes everything to its own advantage. So, if one has liberty in lesser things, why not do the same with this the same way as with that? And in making such comparisons they will make such a mess that there will be utter chaos..."

We are to follow in the footsteps of the

Men are really under attack in our society and men and women are both the losers.

And men preach that women need not pay attention to covering their heads in public showing their submission to their husbands and common decency. Women have burned their hats.

How can anyone in good conscience read 1 Corinthians 11:1-16 and tell me that head covering for women was only cultural?

Christians have compromised the word of God making it mean what they imagine, not the truth.

Both men and women would benefit by their return and obedience to the truth and not explain it away.

The above article gives a very good reason for keeping children from the media.

Period.

Raising them as the Lord has commanded. Enough compromise and shoddy parenting or the church will be the world and the children lost. Turn it ALL off!

Turn away with weeping. Rend your heart and not your garment and turn even to the Lord with all your heart with weeping. Do as the Lord commands and teach your children the truth and keep them from the lies of Satan if you love God.

Deuteronomy 5:32; Deuteronomy 6:6-7 Prayer alone is not enough...

Brethren,

God has given us a hymnbook in the middle of his book. The question must be asked of the church, Why are we using another?

Look in most modern church hymnals and you will not find the psalms in metric there. The question again, is why? The Psalms were meant not only to meditated upon, discussed, read, listened to, and sermonized, but to be sung by those who love Christ.

Dear Unprofitable Servant:

The power and truth of God's word can be experienced. Yes, there are many truths set forth in man-inspired hymns.

Yet, the truth in Matthew 6:33 and Romans 14:17 and Philippians 1:6 (beautiful words indeed!) are found in the Psalms.

I guess it is a matter of experience. If we have never yet sung the Psalms then how can we know that the concepts and truths realized in the New Testament are prophesied and set down in the Old? How can we know that Christ Jesus fills every page?

Here is a challenge to those beloved brethren of mine: try singing the Psalms, not just Psalm 100, but many more of them, all of them, and see what happens to you. See if you do not see Christ and his truth in them.

"Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself." (Luke 24:25-27).

"And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me." (Lu

Dear Dr. Tim,

Acts 17:11 tells us that the Bereans searched the Scriptures to see if what Paul and Silas preached were true words.

Yes, Ezra was moved by God to teach the people the word of God. I would never argue that point. God gives us ministers and we are to be as the Bereans. If our ministers agree with the word of God, and you find yourself growing in holiness and hating sin more and more, and loving God more and more, then you may adduce that things are right.

We also must be careful in our hearing and reading. It is from the study of Scripture that we learn truth, and the Holy Ghost must open our souls to it. This is the most important book. I am sure that you will agree that the Holy Bible is the most important book of all time, ever.

So if the Holy Bible is the most important book ever, why would we want to settle for less, even in our singing? Why would Jesus want to sing a hymn that was not inspired by God?

So what is your opinion about what the Lord sang on the night of his capture? Historically, Jews sang the Hallel on Passover which consists of Psalms 113-118.

The history of the church, and that includes the Old Testament church, is not to be ignored. Our Lord came to fulfill that history

It is not wrong to be a scholar of the Bi

The singing of Christmas carols and the singing of man-made hymns was a gradual declension in the church. It was the singing of Psalms that was from the beginning. Jesus did not sing a man-inspired hymn on the night of his captivity but a Psalm.

Every word sung that is about the word of God but not from the word of God is liable to error.

I used to sing all those hymns, too, and I loved them. But you know what? they are weak and paltry beside the Psalms. They sidestep many issues that are point-blank in the word of God. I no longer love these sentimental ditties but feel and acquire strength from the word of God, preached, read, studied, meditated upon, and sung.

The old paths are the best. Tradition may be very old but not eternal.

"Thus saith the Lord, Stand ye in the Way, and see and ask for the old Path, where is the good Way, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein." Jer.6.16.

To Quiet Christian...it is agreed that Christ must first love us. That is a part of the gospel. Still we contend for the truth.

Thank you, Unprofitable Servant, for your kindness.

Dr. Tim,

It is the curse from our original sin where all these transgressions and cruelties and violence come from. We can never help or love our neighbor, even our unbelieving ones, if we ourselves are not agreed upon what the word of God teaches us. Satan laughs at how he has confused the church and Antichrist rubs his hands together in wicked delight.

A "social gospel" will not in the end help anyone, but the true gospel will. George Whitefield did not contend that the slaves in the USA be freed from their carnal slavery but from their spiritual slavery. He taught them the gospel and saved thousands of souls. They are happy in eternity, our long home, for ever with our God.

In this world, we have sorrow, especially those who are of the household of God. It must be expected and we are to help those from sorrows and harm as much as we are enabled to help them. Our eye, our priority, must be single and have it focused upon the Lord Jesus Christ and his truth.

Jude writes: "Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered to the saints."

Dr. Tim,

I often smile at your posts because they are witty...

however, levity is not a thing commended by the word of God (See Ephesians 5:4)...He rather would have us go to funerals than parties because it would be better for us to see the reality of the shortness of our days here (See Ecclesiastes 7:1-6)... It would make us more careful of our words.

And as for "bickering" that is a thing we are definitely NOT to do...but we ARE to contend for the truth. So this is not bickering but a hope and a prayer that a brother might see beyond his own imaginations into what is really true...

that Xmass is not a thing warranted by the word of God.

P.S. To Unprofitable Servant. I must ask your forgiveness for a past post in that I corrected your spelling. I fear I was prideful.

Let us be careful of our spelling...

the Word became flesh, not the world...

saying that the world became flesh is like saying flesh became flesh...

must be careful of our words, so our Lord has commanded us...
