I have come to believe this but no one I know does. They think it is just a tradition of the past. So I just grow my hair long and live in Biblical silence.

We remedy the problem of the plunging necklines with scarves and buttoned ladies dress jackets. We also observe the woman's headcovering, but it's true that we must be consistent regarding modesty and pay attention to the whole body, not just the head.

I agree with the both of you. My wife has remarked on several occasions how hard it is to find modest dresses even in the retail shops. The length may be fine, but the neckline is cut way too low or if it is modest in the neck, the length is too short. As far as head coverings go, Pastor John Greer of Ballymena FPC and Michael Barrett of Faith FPC in Greenville has an excellent series concerning this issue. Very informative and right to the point.

Yes, this is scriptural. Nothing but the veil openly declares to the unbelievers that a woman is submissive, and this is why most vehemently refuse to wear one (in addition to loving their glorious hair).

Is the Headcovering Really an Issue?

Thank you Pastor for your kind salutation.

I do not contend with the word of God, or with your presentation; however, I do contend with some whose interpretation is without grace, and beyond what Scripture says. Those pastors who are on the SA site are Ovadall and Morecraft.

Pastor Derek Carlsen, on the other hand rightly presents what God says on the matter - no more and no less.

Sorry, I don't know how to link his message.

Thank you for your concern.

Dear Christiana, Does “Doings” matters in Christ? We are called blessed in our “doings” (James 1:25). Truly we are free (Gal 5:1) even Jesus affirms it in (Matt 17:26). Does it mean that we can abstain from paying tax in violation of (Matt 17:27;Rom 13:6-7)? We are called by an “honourable name” (Jam 2:7) such name is not given to unbelievers (Isa 63:19). How do you adorn the doctrine of God according to (Titus 2:10)? Why Ap.Paul admonishes a pastor to take care of their “conduct” in the church (1 Tim 3:15) and to be an example “in Conduct” (1 Tim 4:12); and Ap.Peter admonishes the wives that by their gospel-exalting “pure conduct” can win their husbands to Christ (1 Pet 3:1-2)?.

Amen to that! I find it disturbing that this is even up for discussion, yet SA listeners are buying into this. For consistency one would also have to subscribe to "women not cutting their hair." 1 Cor 11:15 "Women not braiding their hair, or wearing gold or pearls or costly clothing." 1 Tim 2:9 "Men condemned for wearing long hair." 1 Cor 11:14 WHERE DOES IT END?????

"O foolish Galations, who bewitched you, into following a different gospel?" "Having been delivered, are you now seeking to establish your own righteousness?" This is very grievous to the work of the Holy Spirit. Eternal rules and regulations serve no purpose towards salvation. From the heart of one "born again" springs of living water flow.

To Mrs. Sandra M. who posted regarding headcoverings on 9/21/08 on sermon preached: "Don't adhere to a system of legalism." Jesus Christ has set us free! Don't get tangled up in legalism. Muslim women wear headcoverings. Do you want to be associated with them and their false god? This is very disturbing that a pastor would advocate such.

I think by reading these comments and general thoughts that have been presented to me from biblical scholars this falls square into the category of a debatable matter as described in scripture. Therefore it should not even be debated. Christians should not waste their emotional energy and time on these debatable matters....too many souls out there headed for hell and thats where we should be focusing.

Two strong reasons are given by the divinely inspired author to the confused corintian Church.

1. Because of heavenly presence in the gathered Christ's community 1 Cor 11:10(Lk 15:10; Heb 12:22; 1 Pet 1:12)

2. It's apostolic direction in all churches that should be followed 1 Cor 11:16.

If any argument that rise against these reasons given by the apostle, than that person and exegete is called as a "contentious"

Comment will be answered.

There is Hope, I could echo your name right back at you! It's nice to hear a man other than my father say that. My father is one of the few men who not only profess that viewpoint, but actually live it as well, so I've been very blessed to grow up in that environment.

I'm glad to meet you

Women may be subject to A man, but not ALL men, otherwise we would end up like the catholics, who teach their women that whatever the priest says for you to do must be right, and you cannot do wrong in doing it. This opens a very dangerous door, to my mind.
Girl from Australia,

You made a very excellent point. The scripture teaches that the wives are to be under the authority of THEIR OWN husbands, not all men in general just as husbands are to LOVE THEIR OWN wives. Your first and foremost authority as well as the men is to God himself and the Lord Jesus Christ, who is the Head of the church.

I have found that most fundamentalist men, baptist in particular, treat ALL women like they are second rate and should submit to ALL men, not just their own husbands.

I speak as a man and say that that attitude is a disgrace to biblical Christianity and is a mockery to the command of our Lord Jesus Christ.

It seems to me that the question is not presented with sufficient care. 1 Corinthians 11:5 speaks not of the broad category of "women," but rather of "every wife." In addition the verses speak of a wife who "prays or prophecies;" not every woman who attends "public worship."

After researching this text my wife and I have decided that when she is placed in a situation (public or private) where it may appear that Christianity has "turned the world upside down" concerning traditional gender roles she should have "a symbol of authority on her head;"i.e. a prayer veil that covers her whole head. This is "because of the angels" (v. 10) not the culture. We also agree that this is in addition to her long hair which God has graciously provided as a covering for her as she worships and prays on an ongoing basis.

At the time that women were told to wear a head covering, culture must be considered. Prostitutes had their heads uncovered, but modest women wore head coverings.

The Scripture talking about women having their heads covered was more symbolic of her coming under the authority of her husband. Likewise, the husband's head uncovered was symbolic of his submission to the Lord.

These are positional relationships that God has established for a purpose - namely, order in the Church.

However, the good news is "there is neither male nor female in Christ Jesus." We are all one in Him - He being the Head, we being the body.

In our world culture, head covering for women is associated with Islam. I find it offensive as a Christian to identify with that anti-Christian religion.
