EVERY SINGLE CHRISTIAN across the world and throughout history is commanded by the Apostle Peter here to have a defense ready and to make it. We are often told that the word for ‗defense‘ (apologia) has to do with a formal hearing as in a court room. Thus we derive the word ‗apologetics,‘ not because we are to be sorry for what we believe, but because we are to make plain what we believe so as to persuade. Apologetics is the art and science of defending the faith. We say it is an art because it is an activity or craft which can be improved. And we say it is a science because it has a subject matter—namely, reasons for which we believe what we do.
