This book describes the ways in which Italy played an important role in the Reformation.
The Renaissance, a momentous rebirth of scholarship (though mostly unsanctified), originated in Italy and, according to Bisceglia, laid much of the important groundwork for the Reformation. A number of Renaissance scholars were alarmed at the gross immorality that was prevalent in the Church of Rome. The famous Dante, for example, "wrote words of fire against despotism and the ambition of the Church, compared her to the beast described in the book of Revelation, placed popes, prelates and prominent church supporters in Hell, and denounced sin and idolatry" (pp. 40-41).
In spite of Italy's significant contribution to the Reformation, the Reformation itself failed in Italy. While a number of factors may have contributed to this failure, persecution by the Roman Antichrist is likely a prominent one.
