This book consists of a series of exchanges between James White and Dave Hunt over the issue of Calvinism. White defends Calvinism whereas Hunt attacks it. White clarifies the arguments by putting them in their historical context: "Mr. Hunt's attacks upon the Reformed faith parallel those of Roman Catholics. When it comes to the issues of the freedom of God, the efficacy of grace, and the will of man, Mr. Hunt's evangelical tradition stands side by side with Rome in denying the heart of the Reformation" (p. 12).
The real issue, as White points out, is that Biblical salvation (contrary to the views of Dave Hunt) is monergistic rather than synergistic. "Monergists (such as Calvinists) believe there is one power involved in bringing about salvation (God's), while synergists (Arminians, Roman Catholics, and most of man's religions) believe it to be a cooperative effort, with the majority, of course, being done by God, but, in the final analysis, with control remaining in the hands of man" (p. 207).
