This book is based on Shedd's lectures, during the years 1852 and 1853, while he was Professor of Sacred Rhetoric and Pastoral Theology at Auburn Theological Seminary. He said that he hoped that this book might serve "to promote, what is now the great need of the Church, a masculine and vigorous Rhetoric, wedded with an earnest and active Pastoral zeal."
