Covers the lives of Peden, Semple, Welwood, Cameron, Cargill and Smith. These two volumes are edited with illustrative documents, introduction, notes, and a glossary by David Hay Fleming. Walker's advantage in writing of these men, as Hay Fleming points out, can be seen in "that he lived in the times of which he wrote, that he personally knew many of the Covenanters and martyrs of whom he wrote, and that he was himself a shrewd observer and was endowed with a tenacious memory." Walker himself had endured imprisonment and torture for the Covenanted cause of Christ and Burton writes that his "unadorned descriptions of suffering and heroism convey a lesson to the heart which no genius or learning could strengthen."
