John 17 is known as the High Priestly prayer of our Lord Jesus Christ. It consists of prayer made under the shadow of the Cross. Like his time of prayer in Gethsemane this intimate prayer admits us into the very heart and mind of Christ but unlike that prayer time it shows to us the love and affection he has for his church as he speaks to God the Father about men. Here he engages in prayers of intercession as against the contrasting prayers of oblation in Gethsemane. When reading John 17 we walk on holy ground. The prayer marks the end of Jesus earthly ministry and looks forward to the spread of the Gospel through the Apostles and their successors. The Prayer is introduced by the phrase 'Jesus spoke these words'. It is a conversation where readers listen to one Person of the Holy Trinity - God the Son - speaking to another Person of the holy Trinity - God the Father. Thus we must stand in awe, as this is holy ground. Thus this chapter is one of the most wonderful in the whole of the Bible and can be regarded as the real Lord's Prayer. At the end of each chapter there are further study suggestions and recommended things to think about and discuss.
