The Necessity of Right Doctrine
God uses His truth revealed, preached, defined and empowered by the Holy Spirit in regeneration and conversion to dispel the powers of darkness and bring lost sinners to a knowledge of Him (Rom. 6:17-18, Col. 1:12-14). True knowledge revealed and defined in the Gospel, which is the power of God unto salvation, is the means which God uses to draw His people unto Himself so as to secure them in His fellowship (Rom. 1:16-17). It is this truth revealed that God uses to glorify Himself in our hearts, to exalt Christ and give Him all the pre-eminence and to exclude all ground of boasting in ourselves (2 Cor. 4:6). What does a sinner believe that would give evidence of his salvation? HE MUST BELIEVE GOD'S GOSPEL (Mark 16:15-16). This Gospel includes the very doctrines of God which actually invade our minds to overcome the sinful principles of works religion and to establish in us the principles of grace (2 Cor. 10:5). The Gospel is God's declaration of salvation conditioned on Christ alone wherein the very righteousness of God, the imputed righteousness of Christ, is revealed as the ground of salvation. No sinner is saved who is ignorant of this (Rom. 10:1-3). Can a person be intellectually brought into the kingdom of God? Everyone who is brought into the kingdom is brought in intellectually. Now, it is not intellect alone or the mind alone. It involves the affections and the will, the whole heart. And it is God the Holy Spirit who brings sinners into the kingdom (John 6:44-45). Is everyone who is brought into the kingdom an intellectual? No, but they all have a revealed, God-given knowledge of the only ground of salvation, of how God is just to justify the ungodly based upon the merits of the blood and imputed righteousness of Christ (2 John 9-11).

GOD MUST DEAL WITH OUR SIN It is a fact that God who is holy and just and righteous MUST punish our sins. He will by no means clear the guilty (Ex. 34:7), and the soul that sins must surely die (Ezek. 18:4,20) because death is the just wages of sin (Rom. 6:23). If God were to fail to punish even one sin, He would as soon cease to be God. Yet, the psalmist wrote, “He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities” (Psalm 103:10). Notice this verse does not say, “God hath not death with our sins.” It says, “God hath not dealt WITH US after our sins.” Children of God, God most certainly has dealt with our sins. He dealt with our sins in strict justice when He dealt with them as they were imputed (charged, accounted, credited) to Christ and as He punished His beloved Son for all our sins at one time on Calvary. God must deal with sin either in the sinner or in the one and only substitute and surety for sinners, the Lord Jesus Christ. Christ had to die for the sins of His people. Sinner, without Christ God will have to deal with you after your sins, and that means eternal damnation. But thank God that He has a people whom He sent His Son to redeem with the price of His blood. Therefore in our salvation, God is just to justify us and bring us to glory; for He has dealt with our sins in Christ.

AFFLICTED BUT DELIVERED
Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all. Psalms 34:19
I must confess that one of my often repeated phrases of these days is, “there’s always something!” And there always is. We should not expect for it to be any different. The Psalmist is led of the Spirit to tell us. “Many are the afflictions of the righteous.” The word “afflictions” there is defined by words like adversity, calamity, sorrow and trouble. We should not be surprised then or expect that it should be different. Nor should we think that we deserve better. No, the servant is not greater than his Master and did not our Master suffer great afflictions? But He endured those afflictions being “afflicted of God.” He did so as Jesus Christ the Righteous and all His people are “made the righteousness of God in Him.” We bear His name because God has put us in that grace union with Him and as such He calls us “the righteous.” Living near the ocean as I do, I have often likened these continual waves of affliction like the waves that rush to the shore one after the other. The question is not “if” another wave will come but “when” and “how bad” will it be! God sends these waves of affliction for our good. That is not to say they are good “to” us but we have His promise that they will be good “for” us. (Romans 8:28) The Psalmist is also witness to that, saying, “It is good for me that I have been afflicted; that I might learn thy statutes.” (Psalms 119:71) In these afflictions we prove His promises to be true and faithful. We learn His Word, seek His face and find their comfort and hope in the midst of affliction. Let us also remember the other side of this verse. God is faithful and has promised to deliver us out of them. Not at our time or in our way but in His time and way. In the midst of them, His grace will be sufficient and His presence will be sure. He will deliver us out of them! They will end in His time. They will accomplish in us His purposed work. We will rejoice in His deliverance, the means of it and the good work He does for our souls using them. Yes, “many” are the afflictions of those who look to Christ as their Righteousness and HE (not we) is delivering us out of them ALL. If not before, He will finally at the hour when He brings us into His glorious presence forever!
