“Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him. But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.”
WHY TRUE BELIEVERS CAN NEVER FORSAKE CHRIST
As justified sinners, washed in the blood of Jesus Christ and clothed in His righteousness imputed, and in consideration of all our remaining sins and weaknesses, how can we know that we will not eventually totally forsake Christ and abandon Him and His truth? We can know for certain, first, because CHRIST WILL NOT LET US GO (John 10:27-30). He keeps us by His grace and power. The idea that God would not infringe His sovereign will and power upon us so as to impede upon our “free” wills or our inherent goodness is not only absurd but totally unscriptural. Left to ourselves we would never be saved, and we would never continue with Him. Secondly, we can know for certain that we will never totally forsake Christ because we are thoroughly and eternally cleansed from all our sins in His blood, and we stand justified before God in His righteousness imputed. This means we cannot be charged with our sins (Rom. 4:6-8; 8:33-34). The world sees this as a license to sin, but God’s true children, as endowed with the power of His love and grace in Christ, see it as the greatest motivation for obedience and service to Him. The third reason we can know for certain that we who are truly saved could never totally abandon Christ and His truth is the quickening (life-giving) power of the Holy Spirit in our new birth. Not only has God the Holy Spirit given us a new heart and a new spirit, which can never be taken away, He also personally indwells us. He will never leave us, and He will never take back what He has given us; “for the gifts and calling of God are without repentance” (Rom. 11:29). Having been quickened by the Holy Spirit, we will always “keep” (guard and give heed to) His Word of truth and cling to the Lord Jesus Christ. As the psalmist wrote, “Quicken me after thy lovingkindness; so shall I keep the testimony of Thy mouth” (Psalm 119:88).

A BLESSED PEOPLE
"Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD; and the people whom He hath chosen for His own inheritance" (Psalm 33:12). This nation is the chosen generation, the holy nation and peculiar people, both among Jews and Gentiles. The Lord is the God of these, not only as the God of nature and providence, but as the God of all grace. These are happy since He is their portion and exceeding great reward, nor shall they lack any good thing nor need they fear any evil. They are on the heart of God, and cannot be separated from His love. They are engraven on the palms of His hands and shall be helped, strengthened, and upheld with the right hand of His righteousness. All things work together for their good, and this God of theirs will be their God and Guide unto death. They may expect every needful good thing now, and all glory and happiness hereafter. The Lord has chosen these out of the world to be His possession, and they are His jewels and peculiar treasure. These are happy, being the Lord’s portion, and the lot of His inheritance; and He chooses an inheritance for them, adopts and begets them unto it, and makes them meet to be partakers of it.

“He that walketh in his uprightness feareth the LORD: but he that is perverse in his ways despiseth him.” (Proverbs 14:2)
Those who walk in uprightness are those who walk in faith. The walk of faith is the way of righteousness in Christ alone. Those who do so reverence the Lord, delight in that gospel wherein His righteousness is revealed, and ascribe all their salvation to Him. Those who trust themselves and their own works of self-righteousness despise Christ, and therefore all their ways are perverse! Christ is the Way, the Way of righteousness, and all who trust Him walk in uprightness, not theirs but His!
